"Mommy," Mackenzie whispered, tears falling down her face as she watched her mother get into the car and drive away. She should have been used to her mother leaving by now, she'd seen it more times than she could count, but every time her mother walked back into her life, she got her hopes up only to have them dashed once again. It was a vicious circle and one that the seven-year-old girl would never fully get over. She'd watch as her friends were picked up from school by their mothers and fathers or taken to sports on a Saturday by one or both of their parents, but Mackenzie had never experienced that and never would. She'd only been one when Magnolia Winters had walked out on her and her older sister McKayla, who was only two at the time, and it had been like she'd dropped off the face on the earth. She had gone months without contact to either of the girls and the two phone calls that she had made, had only been to ask her own mother for some money. If it hadn't been for their grandmother's insistence that she talked to her daughters, they wouldn't have heard from her at all.

"Come along, dinner is ready. We don't want to keep your grandfather waiting" Mackenzie wiped the tears as they continued to cascade down her cheek and glanced up at her grandmother. She was the closest thing that she and her sister had to a parent, and although she loved her, she wasn't the parent that she wanted. She wanted her mother and didn't understand why her mother didn't want her too. Nodding, Mackenzie slowly turned and made her way inside but she wasn't hungry and didn't want to pretend otherwise. "May I be excused?" No words needed to be said and no answer needed to be given. Mackenzie could tell from the look on her grandmother's face that she had no choice but to eat. "Thing of the boys and girls who are not lucky enough to have food on their table. The Lord has blessed us with this food and you will eat every single bite. Do I make myself clear, young lady?" Mackenzie simply nodded as she took a seat at the table, sitting directly across from her grandfather. "Chin up, princess. You can have some ice cream after dinner."

Following a prayer and dinner, Mackenzie excused herself from the dinner table, claiming to be feeling unwell, and made her way to her bedroom. She wasn't questioned. What seven-year-old would pass up the chance of ice cream before bed? None, or at least that was the conclusion her grandparents had come to, so they believed her and simply told her they would be in to tuck her in and say the Lord's prayer with her once she was ready and they did. The moment she called for them, they said a prayer and bid her goodnight, but she couldn't sleep. All Mackenzie could think about was her mother and how unwanted she felt by her. After pulling up the bedding, she snuggled beneath the covers and attempted to fall asleep until she heard the door to her bedroom slowly open. Biting down on the corner of her mouth, the redhead slowly sat up to see who had entered her room. Seeing her older sister. Mackenzie shifted over, allowing Mckayla to jump into bed with her. They had taken to sneaking into one another's room for the past week and Mackenzie felt grateful for it. McKayla made her feel safe and loved.

Rolling over, Mackenzie watched as her older sister climbed into the bed. "Are you okay, Kenz?" McKayla questioned. Truth was, she really wasn't sure, but she was trying to put on a brave face and pretend otherwise but McKayla could read Mackenzie like a book. "No matter what happens, it's you and me, okay?" McKayla added with a small whisper as she moved a little closer to her younger sister and wrapped her arms around the younger female. "I love you, Kay Kay," Mackenzie whispered as she moved a little closer and snuggled into her sister, wrapping her arms around the other girl in a tight embrace. Being with her sister was the only place that Mackenzie truly felt safe.
