Laura was born on December 21, 1961, to a single mother, Lesley Williams. Lesley had had an affair with her married professor, Gordon Gray, but she had decided to raise her unborn child alone. Unfortunately, Lesley had been told that her baby had died at birth. In truth, Lesley's father had paid a nurse to switch his granddaughter with Jason and Barbara Vining's stillborn infant. Laura grew up with the Vinings in 1975, Lesley was married to Cameron Faulkner and focused on her career at the hospital.

One day, the nurse who had switched Lesley's daughter for the Vining's child, made a deathbed confession to Lesley. Stunned, Lesley tracked her daughter down and saw Laura for the first time in a candy store. Desperate to be a part of her daughter's life, Lesley filed for custody and was granted temporary custody until the judge could decide what would be in Laura's best interest. A couple of months into living with Lesley, Laura became ill and called out for Barbara. Fearing that she was harming her child, Lesley made the heartbreaking decision to let Laura return home to the Vinings, and her younger sister, Amy, but life wasn't easy. Jason was a teacher and didn't make a lot of money.

In 1975, Lesley was married to Cameron Faulkner and focused on her career at the hospital. One day, the nurse who had switched Lesley's daughter for the Vining's child, made a deathbed confession to Lesley. Fearing that she was harming her child, Lesley made the heartbreaking decision to let Laura return home to the Vinings. "I want my mommy. " Little Laura cried out when she fell ill and was returned to the Vinings.

In the summer of 1976, Cameron Faulkner, who was not happy to share his wife with Laura, paid the Vinings to take Laura far away from town. Lesley got wind of what Cameron had done, and she vowed to reclaim her daughter. Cameron kidnapped Lesley, but Lesley was able to force the car off the road. Cameron was killed in the accident. Shortly afterward, Lesley suffered a miscarriage. Coach Whitey Durham, Lesley's work colleague at the high school where she worked three days a week. Coach Durham her friend, helped her pick up the pieces, and with Whitey's help, Lesley was able to rescue Laura from a commune where the Vinings had hidden Laura.

The reunion of mother and daughter didn't go off as planned but, Leslie's now finance Coach Durham convinces everything was done with the best intentions for Laura. At the very young age of sixteen, Laura fell in love with a law student Scott Baldwin.

David was a patient at General Hospital who took advantage of Laura and Leslie was worried David was an older man exploiting Laura. However, Lesley's concerns were well-founded. After Lesley rebuffed David's advances, he moved into an apartment and began a secret relationship with Laura. A brokenhearted Scott turned to Bobbie Spencer for comfort. However, David's dirty deeds at the hospital had caught up to him, and he made plans to leave town. Laura arrived at his apartment, and she saw his packed bags. At first, Laura assumed that David would take her with him, but he cruelly revealed that he had used Laura; he had been in love with her mother.

Devastated, Laura lashed out in anger and pushed David. David stumbled backward, fell, and hit his head on the fireplace. The blow killed him instantly, and a frantic Laura called her mother. Lesley found her daughter in a near-catatonic state and had no memory of what had happened. Fearing that her daughter would be accused of murder, Lesley took responsibility for David's death then proceeded with plans for Whitey to adopt Laura. Laura started counseling, and the night before the start of Lesley's trial, Whitey, Laura, and Lesley celebrated Whitey becoming Laura's legal father.

Eventually, Laura recalled the events of the night that David had died, but she panicked and ran away to New York City. Danger stalked Laura almost immediately when a pimp singled her out then abducted her. Luckily for Laura, Scott had followed Laura, and with the help of a friend, Scott had rescued Laura before the pimp had carried out his ominous threats. With Scott's support, Laura returned to Port Charles and confessed to killing David. The judge took Laura's age and the circumstances into consideration, and he agreed to drop the charges against Laura once she had successfully completed her probation. Shortly after Laura married Scott but, short-lived when she meets Lucus Lorenzo Spencer and Charles J. Bourne around the same time she had fell smitten hopelessly in love with Charles. She was working for Luke when she met Charles and Luke had fallen for her knowing she made plans with Charles Luke constantly had her work overtime. One night Luke had her work overtime and he was drunk forcing himself on her and raped her she blocked out the rape but, a few months later ends up pregnant Luke convinced her she was drunk and they had sex. She ran away but, Luke convinces her to marry him so she wouldn't be an unwed mother and have a bastard son. She did as Luke had asked but, she was still deeply in love with Charles.

Laura and Luke are constantly on the run from Frank Smith's men and maybe Luke was afraid Charles had figured out the truth. Laura begs him to stop running she wanted her mother and father to know Lucky. He did what was asked but, Charles knew the truth threatening Luke to leave Laura or he would take matters into his own hands. He fled leaving her divorced and she and Charles rekindled their love and he helps her raise Lucky she wanted plenty of children with him. Which they have after they were married.

Short-lived when Strvos Cassadine kid-naps her for his own and when hidden in Greece away from Charles Starvos wanted an air for the Cassadine thrown and she becomes pregnant with Nikolas. She briefly had an affair with Stavros's brother Stefan who promises to look over Nikolas.

Charles rescues her they wed and soon she became pregnant with a little girl named Leslie Lou but, Lulu needs a bone marrow transfusion and had a rare blood type. Nikolas had so Laura comes clean about her son with Starvos to save Lulu and Nikolas comes to the United States to save his half-sister he and Lucky always fueding at first and, other siblings. He did stay in the Cassadine Mansion off of Spoon Island with his Uncle Stefan and Aunt Kathrine and got to know the rest of his family he never met before. From time to time Helena would visit he would not have anything to do with Starvos. Charles was upset at first but, understood she did what she had to do to survive.
