life is not easy knowing that you will never die. trust me, I know.
when I was born the world I knew was only years away from being thrown into chaos. you see, I was born in a village on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt in the year 1795. that was just 3 short years until my home was invaded by France.
my birth and early life were not what anyone, even those of that time, would call normal. my mother, Nimera had lived in the colony of her birth for most of her long, long life. She was, I found out later, one of the last dozen Fae of her kind. She was a Bennu, or as the world knows us, a Phoenix. She had been born a long long time ago and had died many times over in her long life. the year I was conceived, she had been with a Mamluka soldier who had disappeared the next day. (such a guy move, right?) when she found out she was pregnant with me, she went to the elders in the colony, who told her that since I was only going to be born half Bennu, for me to live and get the powers she had. she had to give them to me. she had to die, forever, to pass her gift along. and my mother, having been a seer, knew what was coming. so she gave her life so that could be born the Bennu that I am.
after my mother died, I was taken in by the colony. since I didn't have a family, per se, I was moved from home to home. just after my 3rd birthday, Napoleon and his army invaded. being so young I don't really remember what happened. I just remember gunshots, fire, and screams. even 200+ years later, I still wake up with nightmares of the screams.
Apparently, being so young, they thought that they could raise me as a French (wo)man, so they took me home with them to France where I spent most of my life. growing up there in the home of one of the nobles, I always knew I was different. not only did I have blips of memories of my colony, but I looked different than everyone else. not to mention that I had already died a couple of times by the time I was 18. I'd been run over by a carriage when I was 5, gotten into a fight with someone at school when I was 14, where I was shoved and ended up cracking my skull, and then at 17, I was raped and 'murdered' by a caravan of travelers. it was not fun.
when I was 18, I decided that I was getting out of there. I couldn't, wouldn't, continue to live in a world that treated me like I was scum of the earth. shortly after my birthday, I had packed a bag with enough food, stolen clothes, money, and the few things I'd been given that I cared about, along with a thick woolen cloak, stole a horse, and took off. thankfully, the people whom I'd been living with didn't report me so I was able to get away.
over the next dozen years or so, I spent time traveling through Europe with my horse Rafiq. during my travels, to earn money I would spend a couple of weeks working a Taven before moving on to another. I did that until about 1825 when I was in London, and my sweet Rafiq died. he'd been getting old and couldn't travel like he once had. since I no longer had a way to travel, I found work as a maid for a family who had a large estate. they were nice enough and paid more than most others did in the town. I worked there for nearly 65 years. I was beyond lucky that no one cared to comment that I never got a day older, no matter how long I worked and lived there. all they cared about was that I was able to get my job done. in the years that I spent there, I was able to learn from the tutors that the children had, and by the time the eldest child passed away from old age in 1890, I was a wealthy, well-educated woman.
since I had spent so much time in the home, and caring for it, when Elenor passed away, she left the house, the lands, and everything to me. but I had spent too much time there, and finally, people on the outside were starting to take notice of me. so rather than stay there, I closed up the house and decided to move to the United States. New York, to be precise. there, I was able to get a lovely apartment make friends, and spend most of the time that was not spent learning, giving back to those in need. Β to this day, there are dozens of shelters, soup kitchens, and community centers around the country named in my honor, though I would never tell any of them that I am who started them.
Throughout the early 20th century, I took part in nearly every major movement that you learn about in school. women's suffrage movement? I was right there with my sisters in arms, fighting for our rights to vote alongside men. Civil rights? you know I was at Dr. Kings' march to the capital, and I cried like a baby when he was killed. Stonewall? Who do you think gave Marsha the brick she threw at the cops? JFK's assassination? watched the live broadcast of the news when it was announced have been part of every major event in the past 150 years, but it wasn't until the past 17 that I started to learn about myself. Β
in 2007, I was one of the first hundred people to submit my DNA to 23&me. That was when I learned that I am 95% Egyptian. within a couple of weeks of getting my results, I was on a plane to Cairo. in the weeks that I spent there, I met Alyana. She was one of the women who made up my mother's Colony. She is the one who taught me everything I know about myself, my history, my family. about who, and what I am.
in the years since then, I have gotten myself a home in Egypt and go back at least once a year. but for now, my main base is New York, where I own a club called Embers. though no one other than my GM, Mariana, knows that I am the owner. to everyone else, I am just a bartender who happens to not age. then again that is not out of the ordinary in New York. Β
"but Nixi" I hear you ask, "but did you die?" the answer to that is yes. more times, in more ways than I care to remember. As I said before, it's not fun so I try to forget it as much as I can. I have died every way you can think of, I've been shot, stabbed, poisoned, run over, beaten, and yes, I've even been decapitated. how I came back from that one, I will never know. but now I try to stay out of doing things that will accidentally kill me. now I just do stupid shit like skydive without a parachute, go rock climbing with no gear, that kind of shit.
Nowadays, if you want to find me comeΒ pay a visit to my club and maybe you will see some shit for yourself. until then, catch ya on the flip side.
