Dereck Shepard, The Man
Dereck Shepard was born in Atlanta, GA to Paul and Rita Shepard on September 30, 1995. Both of his parents worked, his father being a factory worker for the military adn his mother being a nurse. So while neither were home a lot, when they were home, he would be emotionally and physically abused for wanting to be more than someone's puppet. He frequently stayed with his grandmother, Paula Shepard and she got him on the right path. At the age of 17, Dereck moved from Atlanta to Los Angeles, CA, where he attended Crenshaw High School. Upon graduation, he was introduced to The Great Nipsey Hussle, through various people that knew of the deals Dereck had done around the school to make himself a profit. After meeting Nipsey, his life changed. He slowly became more and more interested in business, as well as the street life, but he was caught up on a gun charge, that ultimately got him 3 years in federal prison. Upon his release, he worked with Nipsey to get into real estate, selling his first home for over $1M, then taking off from there. "Lemme get you pregnant... or are you already pregnant?" Valeria had simply laughed off his question even though they both knew she'd been tired lately and hadn't felt the best. "I haven't been checked but who knows, by now I might be." A sudden surge of panic flooded her system as the realization of what could be hit her. Who was she trying to kid? They'd been crazy active and because of their desire for children as it was, hadn't been careful. “Well baby… don’t you think we should check? I mean, you have been sick.” Her blue eyes cut back to meet the doe eyes that quizzed her without words, nodding along in response. She knew Dereck was right, after all this time and given her symptoms, it seemed a test was in order. “I’ve been worn out too. I’m sure a place is open unless you just want me to try a test first?” It felt like a silly question, of course she should test first. But she knew that she could rely on a doctor's scan more. False results were a thing and she didn't want to take chances. “Let’s just go get a test baby. It will make it easier.”
Moments later, Valeria had dressed herself to keep a low profile, complete with sunglasses to try and conceal her appearance as she and her husband visited a local convenience store to pick up a Clear Blue test. The entire experience was stressful and had her anxiety peaking thus forcing her to make everything as quick as possible before they both rejoined their security team to head back home. Valeria rushed into the bathroom of their new home and peeled the packaging, her eyes staring hard at the test in her hands. Her heart was pounding with the anxiety of the moment up until it was time to flip over that test and read that screen.
10 minutes. The longest wait she'd swear she'd ever had to experience. Their entire lives relying on that stick lying upside down on the countertop. She squeezed Dereck's hand as they sat on the edge of their bed, the anxiety beginning to cause a dizzying effect for her but she opted to try and stay strong. "I can't believe this might be happening, babe." Her worry immediately being comforted when he leaned in to kiss her, offering her brief reprieve from all of her anxious thoughts. "I can, baby. I can't wait to see if we are." His sweet tenderness throughout this trial brought a much needed smile and breath of fresh air to Val's body. "I'm ready for this if it's true. Are you?" Her head fell to his shoulder while their hands remained locked, the clock ticking quickly down to their future. “I’ve never been more than ready for anything in my life other than marrying you, baby. I’ll take anything that comes with it and I’ll protect us from it all baby. There’s nothing I want more baby, nothing at all my Queen."

The countdown was over and the truth was now waiting for them on that counter. As a quick stress reliever, Valeria stole a soft kiss from her husband who had been so supportive throughout their relationship but most of all, through this. "Ready to go look, baby?" She smiled and was met with an equally as ready partner, her hand still squeezing his as they both headed into the bathroom, the test staring them down now.

Valeria took a deep breath and picked up the test with her shaky hands, glancing over at Dereck for reassurance that he was ready, to which he responded by nodding with a smile. Taking another deep breath, she exhaled just as deeply and turned the test around and they both inhaled their gasps, eyes wide with some tears of joy later.
