Cassandra Cain is a member of the Batman Family and protégé of Batman. The daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva, she was raised to become the greatest weapon for the League of Assassins. However, horrified from her first killing, she fled to the Batman Family for protection. Becoming the fourth claimant of the Batgirl identity, she helped him and Tim Drake protect Gotham. Cassandra has also used other identities, including Black Bat and Orphan.

Early Life
Cassandra Cain was conceived and trained from birth with the intention of creating the perfect bodyguard for Ra's al Ghul. After many unsuccessful attempts to train children from birth in martial arts to make them inculcate it like a native language (the most successful being the abandoned child The Mad Dog ), David Cain, a member of al Ghul's League of Assassins, decided the right genes were necessary to create this "One Who Is All". Cain searched for the perfect mother for this child, finding her in the Wu-San sisters of Detroit, who practiced martial arts with each other nearly every moment of their childhood in a type of sister's language.

Trained by her father, assassin David Cain, to be the ultimate martial artist and assassin, Cassandra was not taught to speak. Instead, the parts of her brain normally used for speech were trained so she could read other people's movements and body language and predict, with uncanny accuracy, their next move. This ability lives up to her namesake; Cassandra in Greek mythology had the gift of seeing into the future, but was cursed so that nobody would ever believe her predictions. This closely relates to her capability of 'seeing' her opponents' next move at the cost of being (initially) unable to speak. This also caused her brain to develop learning functions different from most, a form of dyslexia that hampers her ability to read and write.

When she was 8 years old, Cain decided his experiment had progressed far enough for him to test Cassandra's abilities in the real world, and took her to kill a businessman. At the time, Cassandra had no idea what she was doing and believed it was only a game (an interpretation in keeping with her own reaction to what happened, and matching the interpretation of Alfred Pennyworth, an expert on children who saw a tape of events). After striking a deathblow, she "read" the target as he died, and saw death as he saw it. "Terror and then... nothing". In addition to scarring her emotionally, she realized murder, like Cain's profession, was wrong, and she ran away from her father.

After being homeless for the next two years she found herself in Gotham, fighting for her life on the streets until she found one of Oracles agents in No Man's Land Gotham City. Which led her to being Oracles youngest agent, even after much debate with her father she had the final say in saving the child. She became Barbara’s ward. Batman eventually learned about Cassandra's past when Cain transmitted a video he had made of the murder to the Batcave, but Batman nevertheless continued to accept Cassandra after she took several bullets to save the life of a hired assassin, proving her devotion to protecting human life.

During her time with the bat she bonded quickly with Tim Drake and Dick Grayson who became like brothers to her. During the time of this almost family bonding it came to light that Lady Shiva might have a larger part in Cassandra’s life through an underground fighting ring that Dick Grayson uncovered. Batman was not keen on letting her go, saying only he and Dick would be on the case, her and Tim were to stay behind and protect Gotham in their absence.

Not ideal for Cassandra she became cold and distant for the first few months leading to her and Tim to have a strained relationship and almost result in both their deaths in an encounter with Death Stroke. A hard hit to the head and something rewired in her brain, she’d forgotten who she was and who Tim was. Who her parents were and most of her history.

Tim did his best to look after her with Alfred but there wasn’t much they could do to help her. Sending her to Oracle and asking for help from Zatanna led her down a path of resistance to painful memories she felt better off without. This path though led to her being able to think in English for the first time, though it is something she tries to resist often it does help her now to connect with others and she began a road of redemption with Tim after treating him poorly while they protected their city.

It was only when Gordon came around with Oracle to tell them that Batman had sent out a distress signal that she was kicked into gear to return even with her odd new ‘disability’. Following along with Tim they had to leave Gotham in Gordon and Oracle’s hands for now; of course Barbara could take care of everything.

Off to China they were taken, meeting up with Oliver Queen who was to be the adult on their mission until they could find NightWing.

Fankang Province
Once they met up with NightWing outside one of the smallest provinces in China it was revealed that Batman hadn’t been out of it in around a week, he told night Wing to send a distress signal if he wasn’t out by then so he decided to bing in a bigger crew to help with the situation before having no one at all.

It turned out, inside Batman had been debating with Lady Shiva over Cassandra for quite some time, both physically and verbally. Training, family, the right to freedom, it had all come up and Lady Shiva was willing to let Cassandra pick who she wanted to be. It was cut and dry for them Gotham or China but with silent slow memories coming back to her Cass would not choose. It was both or nothing. Lady Shiva had not treated her poorly and seldom in her life she was not about to lose the connection for good. All people had redemption opportunities (Batman taught her that) so she was going to give her mother a chance.

This led to almost a split custody situation with Bruce and Shiva for the foreseeable future. During her first year with Lady Shiva she was visited by a lot of the new bat-family, or rather the bat-family she wasn’t aware of. Keeping her up to date and introduced to others.
