Devyn glanced over at him with a sly smile and some playful side eye as he continued to dig himself a hole for her to play with him in. 'Well, I tried to get you to wear the comfy shoes and leave the heels but no such luck...' She clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth and pointed her finger at him with a soft nod. "Ahh, I see, so what you're saying is..." She leaned in closer between the two of them as if it was an actual secret they didn't want anyone else to know about, "You wanted me to wear the comfy shoes cause you actually wanted the heels instead for later..." She pulled away with a grin before taking a sip of her drink. To say the least, Devyn loved how playful they could be with each other, and it never felt forced or like they had to try too hard for it, it just came naturally. And after everything they had been through, she felt lucky to have him in her life.

After Nick was laid to rest, it was hard for Devyn to look at Elias, because he was the only other person in her life that actually knew Nick, before and after he was captured and came home a hero who was homeless living on the streets. Devyn never blamed Elias or held any kind of grudge against him because he was the only one to come back home alive. Not that Elias ever really spoke about it, but she knew he wasn't just drinking and getting drunk for the fun of it. From what Devyn knew about the little bit that Nick had told her about his capture, there was no way Elias wasn't holding on to some kind of guilt from the time he served, especially since he didn't bring Nick home the way he promised to.

To say she was beginning to feel her buzz was an understatement. Her eyes became hazy, and Sam knew that it was two drinks, and she was done. As far as everyone could see, Devyn was always in control. Some would call her uptight, especially when she was working on certain cases. She had to be that way. If there was one way to loosen her up, it was to give her a strong drink and watch it all unfold. Hearing Elias chuckle she glanced over at him, smiling as she was about to ask what was so funny. 'First off, I was under the impression that I was your favorite guy, now you have another and you're just gonna spend the whole weekend with him...' This caused Devyn to give him a booper lip briefly before giggling out softly. "You poor poor man, and not all weekend, just one night. But you can totally be my favorite guy, and if Cam ever finds out... you're the one in trouble. not me and my heels not fitting you will be your last concern." She smirked softly and smiled.

Devyn didn't normally pay close attention to the nonsense around them but when the group of guys got obnoxiously loud, banging on the table demanding their drinks once again, it caused her attention to turn towards them again. A part of her felt bad for Sam for having to deal with people like that, but somehow, he did it, every single night. When Devyn made eye contact with one of the guys, he began to cat call and pointed her out to the others in the booth. While this wasn't her first rodeo dealing with inappropriate commentary from a group of intoxicated guys, she didn't react at all. The last thing she wanted was for a fight to break out and Elias just ordered another drink. Elias wasn't deaf. She knew he heard them talking about her. She placed her hand on his arm and tilted her head to the side as if she could read his mind. "And before you even think about it, don't." She said with a smile before continuing, "It's okay...they are harmless and probably still in college. Isn't there some kinda rule about not drinking on an empty stomach? I would kill for some cheese fries and a cheeseburger... This is why Sam needs a grill in here..." She spoke up just as he dropped off Eli's drink, trying to distract him with a conversation.

'I happen to have a pair of your shoes in the backseat, ones without heels if you're interested?' Devyn was in mid drink when she heard him speak about having shoes in the back of his truck. She covered her mouth, trying not to laugh and spew her drink all over the place as she swallowed and pointed at him. "You know, if you wanted to borrow my shoes, all you had to do was ask. you didn't have to hold them hostage in the back of your truck." She smiled instantly, a soft laugh escaping her mouth as her lower lip disappeared behind her teeth as she bit down on it. "I thought you were more of a heel guy, but I guess I was wrong." She scrunched her nose with a shrug as she teased him playfully.

Watching the smile on Eli's face disappear after her question about his day, she couldn't help but frown, her head tilting to the side. Elias hardly ever gave Devyn details about cases he was working on and a part of her thought it was because it was too graphic at times, so she never pushed for more information. Most times whenever Elias tried to bring up Nick, Devyn shut it down fairly quick. She figured thinking about it and knowing exactly what happened would set her back and all the hurt and heartache that she had overcome would start all over again. It had been 8 months since he died and over a year since she last seen Nick. 'Just be careful when you're out please. Keep your eyes open.' It had to be more serious than he was letting on if he was reminding her to be careful. Devyn nodded her head and spoke softly. "of course I will be." 'I don't know all the details yet, but it's not looking too good.' She offered a small smile back at him, picking up her drink and holding it up, "Well, here's to hoping it comes to a safe close and quickly at that." She leaned her head back as she finished her drink.

As if it was her job, Devyn worried about Elias and the work that he did. Just like Nick, he could be here one day and gone the next and Devyn dreaded the long days when she didn't hear from him. Her attention was pulled to the group of guys drinking at the booth as they were becoming rowdier the more, they drank. It wasn't unusual for Devyn to keep an eye on her surroundings when she was out with co-workers, but she knew she was safe no matter what when she was with Elias, and it wasn't just because he was working in the police department either. Regardless of his job, Devyn knew he would protect her.  As Devyn's phone rang, she pouted, hoping it wasn't work calling her for some kind of emergency already. Being under the influence made it hard for her to come to the rescue at work, and the fact that she hadn't ate anything today meant it didn't take much for her to start feeling her buzz.

Flipping the phone over to see who was calling she instantly smiled. "Sorry, one second. I have to take this." She told Elias as she slid her thumb across the screen to answer the phone. "If it isn't my most favorite guy in the world..." She spoke with the biggest grin across her face. Cameron Brooks. Cameron was Devyn's 6-year-old god son, and son to her best friend Kristina. He was the only boy that held on to Devyn's heart and God knew what he was doin’ when he brought Cam into her life. She held the proud title of being Auntie Dev. "Yeah, I miss you too. I have the whole weekend off... Yes, I promise we will. Okay, buddy I love you too." Hanging up the phone she put it back down on the counter. "Turns out I have a date with a 6-year-old one day this weekend to go to the playground. Imagine that.” She laughed softly.

Seeing her phone light up a few moments later, Devyn grinned at his reply before locking her phone to turn the screen off. Just then, Sam brought her drink finally and sat it down in front of her, she made grabby hands at it as the smile on her face grew. "Thanks Sammy, you're the best!"  One of the perks of visiting bars so frequently was that you come to know your bartender. Devyn was proud of the fact that she was the only one who called Sam, Sammy. She had helped his son's wife get custody of her kid again. She picked up her glass and took a drink of it before putting it back down on the counter. Sam knew how to start her night out with  her drinks when she did come in. Her first drink was mostly coke with just enough rum to get a taste of it. She was nearly finished with her first drink. As she waited for Elias to arrive she made causal conversation with Sam. "You know Sammy, you should really invest in a grill for this place.. bar food is the best." She smiled as she nodded her head knowingly. She was nearly finished with her first drink when she heard Elias. Looking over to see him slide onto the empty stool on the other side of her, her smile brightened and she scrunched her nose playfully. "Well, look what the cat dragged in.."

Devyn learned at an early age how to suppress her struggles. While she looked like she always had everything under control, the joke was on everyone who thought it cause no one seen the struggles she faced from behind closed doors when she was all alone and could fall apart freely. It was exhausting holding it all together. She sometimes suffered from night terrors and panic attacks, most of it stemmed from the accident with her brother but some of it had to do with the miscarriage she felt with shortly after she arrived in Savannah. There were very few people who knew about her miscarriage.

'Hey.. everything okay?' "It will be soon." She held up her almost empty drink and finished it off before smiling. Devyn loved how much he cared about her and making sure she was okay. "To answer your question though, yes.. Everyhing's okay. It was just a long day.. Two new fosters who I had to find placement for, one was almost instantly kicked out of said placement, a stack of paper work that needed to be filled out for the placements, and some supervised parental visitations to monitor which one ended in a disaster... but yay me.. more paper work... and don't even get me started on the shoes. I probably have blisters the size of africa..." She rambled on with how her work day went, a frown appearing on her face as she looked down at her feet which dangled from the bar stool. When Sam brough Elias his drink he already had Devyn's ready too. "Mmm, and the night is already getting better.." She reached for her drink, saying thank you to Sam once more, before taking a large gulp. She leaned her elbow on the bar top and twisted in her seat to face him and placed her drink back down on the bar. "Enough about me.. how about you? How was your day?"  She scrunched her nose and smiled softly.

The news of Nick dying broke Devyn to her core. She had already lost so many important people in her life already. Her brother, her baby,  now Nick. For two whole weeks after Nick was put into the ground Devyn laid in bed staring at the walls, the ceiling, up at the sky from the window next to her bed. She didn't leave the house, or return to work, she hardly spoke to anyone, barely ate or drank anything. She felt completely empty and that feeling scared the sh*t out of her. It was a complete blur for her to the point she didn't even remember Elias being there 24/7 to help try to take care of her. She often found herself thinking back to the weekend she went back to her hometown Blue Ridge for a custody case that needed to be closed. To say it was a coincidence that she ran into Nick while visiting her brother's frave for the first time in 11 years was bizarre. Seeing the state of Nick was in was unbelievable. She wouldn't of believed it was him had she not seen it herself. His eyes were cold as stone and blood shot, his face was lined with dirt, or bruises, and dried blood, his clothes reeked of booze and like he needed a shower. To top it all off, he had a bottle of liqiour in his hand.

Devyn wasn't sure what happened to Nick over the last 11 years, but she knew one thing, it wasn't good. The work part of that weekend went smoothly but everything with Nick made Devyn a nervous wreck. He was unhinged and took off in the middle of sharing a meal at the local diner in town. The town once considered Nick a hero that came back home alive, but now he was a homeless drunk who definitely didn't consider himself a hero. It wasn't until Devyn was leaving town that she found Nick standing on the ledge of a bridge that over looked a gorgeous view as the sun was rising while on her way out of town. She was so afraid he was going to jump. If she didn't show up the way she had a part of her thought he might of actually went through with it. He told her almost too calmy, 'Enjoying the view...' when she had asked him what he was doing up there. While the view was beautiful, she rather him enjoy it from the ground. Nick went on to apologize to her about how he was sorry for everything. He was sorry for letting her leave, sorry for leaving for the service all those years ago and how he should of fought harder to find her.

It was also on the bridge that Nick confessed to Devyn what had happened to one of his fellow soilders when they were captured by their enemy over seas. The reason that Nick turned out the way he had. Completely broken and full of guilt because he was forced to kill a friend, a teammate, a man who had a pregnant wife and 2 kids at home, or be killed and he didn't want to die. From the time he came back into her life again until he had left it, they shared one kiss, and it was on the side of that bridge once he was finally on the ground again, pleading for her to stay with him now. 'Please don't leave Devyn... I don't want to lose you again...' Devyn wasn't sure what cracked inside of him that day to be so vulnerable but she didn't overthink it. Instead, that's when the idea clicked in her head for him to come stay with her in Savannah and get the help he truly deserved. 'I'll come with you and do whatever you ask of me, I promise..' After that, Nick got into the car and they drove back to Savannah.

A couple months went by, and things were going great. Nick had gotten into a support group to help with his trauma and heavy drinking problem. He had even run into a best friend that he served several tours with, Elias Maddox. After meeting up with Elias it had become almost routine for the guys to hang out. Devyn was happy that Nick seemed to be doing well considering everything he had been through and if having Elias around helped him, Devyn loved that for him. What Devyn did not know is how both men sneakily decided they were going back overseas for a rescue mission. Elias promised that he would watch Nick's back and bring him home safely. And even though she begged Nick not to go, it wasn't until Devyn came home to a empty house and a sticky note that had familiar chicken scratch handwriting, 'I'm sorry I can't... don't hate me.. -Nick..' She understood why he did it. He was trying to forgive himself so he could be better for her. He wanted to rescue one soldier to make up for the one's life that he took.

PRESENT TIME
It was finally Friday night and Devyn was beyond thankful that she wasn't going to be on call this weekend, unless it was an extreme emergency. She had two new files land on her desk, which meant she had to find placement for these kids to stay, a sh*t ton of paper work to fill out and file, and three supervised parental visits, 2/3 that actually went smoothly. It wasn't out of the ordinary for Dev to end up at the bar after a long ass day of working. After a few months of Nick's funeral, it was often Devyn got calls to come pick up Elias from the bar because he was cut off or on the verge of a fight. She would sometimes join her co-workers but tonight she was solo and she didn't mind that either.

Coming straight from work Devyn wore a knee length skirt with a small slit running up the side, a white tank top with a over jacket, and a pair of high heels that she honestly couldn't wait to ditch. If it was up to her, she'd burn all the high heels, but she had to be a professional and apparently high heels were a part of the description. Taking off the jacket she put it in the passenger side seat and grabbed her purse, getting out of the car to make her way into the bar. For it being a Friday the bar wasn't as packed as it normally was, but Devyn knew with a snap of the fingers that could change. Her eyes scanned the bar, seeing a group of guys who were bound to be a problem later, good thing was she didn't plan on staying that long. Stopping at the bar she waved to the bartender, Sam. "Hey Sam, I'll take a coke and rum and go ahead and put it on Eli's tab." She grinned as she sat down on the stool and reached down taking off her heels and sighed in relief. Her feet were killing her. Taking her heels she placed them on the empty stool.  Opening her messages with Elias she began to type out a text.

Hitting send she smiled softly before putting her phone down as she waited for a response.

The more he spoke the more Eloise felt her own past haunting her. She was more than aware that good men, good people, could flip a switch with a breath. Her own father, the man who was supposed to protect her had tried to kill her. Her partner, the first man she'd ever really loved; had tried to kill her. Both good men, outstanding citizens, a retired military officer and a narcotics agent; turned to monsters. When Elias spoke about Thompson's family owning property all over the state, her spine straightened. The ATF had resources, they weren't your usual agents. A small smirk played at her lips when Elias spoke about the mans parents, going to whatever lengths it took to protect their child.

"Look," Eloise finally spoke when he was finished. "I am not here to tip toe around peoples feelings for this man." She stood, grabbing her leather jacket from the back of her chair. "The truth is that this man is not the man you remember. Whether or not he was a good man doesn't matter anymore. His body count is up in the twenties, which means he's landed himself on the most wanted list." Eloise wasn't good at being gentle, or beating around the bush. What she was good at, was finding her man. She wasn't ready to share her own past, though she could easily tell him that she'd been here before.

"If we do not stop him he will reach his peak, and I don't know about you," she paused to look at him while slipping her arms into the arms of her jacket. "But I'm not willing to put my faith on who he used to be." Her dark chocolate eyes met Elias, softening her features slightly. "I get it, okay? I've watched someone I trusted with my life throw it all away. I know that it hurts like hell, and I know it makes you angry." She grabbed two of the files. "I'll let you do what you need to, but you need to understand that I will also do what I have to." She stepped forward, closer to Elias as she moved around her desk. "You may think his parent's can't help, but you'd be surprised by what you can find out when people don't talk."

Was she being a little cold, maybe, but she wasn't here to remember the past. The present was what mattered, bodies dropping and a threat on the rise. "I'm going to talk to his parents." She held out one of the files to Elias. "You can come, or you can do your own thing." She pulled her hair out from under the collar of her jacket. "Either way, this ends with him dead, or behind bars." She'd inserted the dead part because she'd seen it before. These types of people didn't usually go down in cuffs; but body bags. "Time to make your choice Elias."

God damn you’re cute.
New Beginnings

Apr 28th 2023 - 1:30 PM

Her phone buzzed, telling her there was another message. A message that she planned to not answer. And if she read it that would be a completely different story. She knew, without even having to look, that it was Max. Even when she was at work it was like he was always tracking her. Needing to know where she was at all times of the day. The fact she wasn’t responding was just adding fuel to the fire. Abby should know better. Know better than to ignore him. And also know better than to stay in the relationship. She was the daughter of an FBI Agent, she knew the statistics of these situations. Yet she let herself become blind to the obvious and now she was stuck. There wasn’t a way out. At least not one that she could see.

“Abby.” Snapping out of her thoughts and back to reality. Blinking a few times she nearly dropped her phone, not even remembering pulling it from her pocket to check the messages. Her whole body was numb from fear. Knowing the threat behind the words ‘wait till you get home.’ And it was paralyzing fear that it caused within her. “Hm?” She focused her gaze on the man standing in front of her. “You alright?” For a moment she just silently stared before snapping out of it once more. Putting on a smile as she nodded. “Perfectly alright. I gotta go. I’m late for meeting Parker for dinner.” With that she quickly grabbed her jacket and keys before all but sprinting from the office to leave before further questions could be asked. Her older brother an excuse to get out of there without further questions, hopefully. Though she had a gut feeling her odd behavior would eventually get back to her father.

Instead of going home Abby continued to drive. Soon pulling into the parking lot of a bar on the other side of town. It was one that she frequented but others she knew didn’t. This meant it wouldn’t get back to her parents her excessive drinking as of late. Nor would it get back to Max on where she was. In fact. Thinking of it, Abby turned off her phone so any chance of Max trying to trace her location wouldn’t be accomplished. Opening the door of the car she climbed out, head tilted down slightly to avoids the rain from hitting her face as she quickly walked across the parking lot. How many shots of tequila would it be tonight? And would it just stop there? Too early to be determined at this point. As she stepped inside, Abby allowed the stress to leave, her shoulders slumping slightly as a result. Walking over to the bar she sat down, ordering a few shots before settling on some whiskey.

Everything just went down like water and it wasn’t long before she could feel the uneasy feeling lift even further. Glancing around, still a bit on edge that Max would suddenly come walking through the doors. Turning back around she shifted uncomfortably before sliding from her stool. Changing seats so she was now at the end of the bar, facing the door so she could see who came into the bar.

As the two got settled, Mina couldn't help but stare at Elias. He was handsome and had a great smile. The way he dressed was pretty sexy and she appreciated that he was actually putting in effort into their date. "No, I've never been on a blind date before." She said looking over at him, maintaining eye contact as she took a sip of her champagne. Setting the glass back down, she smiled bright at him. "I have to say though, I'm honestly not disappointed. So far you been pretty charming." She said as she gave him her undivided attention.

"So tell me about yourself?" She said as she brushed her hair back behind her ears. She was hungry but she wanted to talk a little before focusing on good. "What do you do for work? I honestly wasn't given any information about you. I came in truly blind." She said laughing, hoping he was interested in the conversation and not regretting agreeing to this date.

"Mina?"

The voice filled her ears through the music and small chatter that filled the restaurant. Hearing that, she turned around to look up at Elias. Her smile forming as she took in the view of the man looking for her. He was tall, handsome, and that confused boy look to him was to die for. "That's me." She said as she smiled at him, standing up. Even with her heels, there was some height to him that allowed him to tower over her. Not realizing that her getting up would only put just a few centimeters between them. She didn't mind though. "You must be Elias.." Her words adding an emphasis of happiness to his name. In her mind, she was thanking her friend for setting them up. "It's nice to finally meet you. I've been nervous all day." She said with a small laugh, tucking a blonde hair behind her ear.

The hostess popped up by the two, smiling over at them. "You two must be Elias and Mina. I'm Rebecca and I will be your host." She spoke. "A friend of yours called. We have a lovely spot for the two of you if you just follow me." She said to them. Turning around, she began to walk towards the elevator. "Shall we?" Mina asked Elias, taking his hand as the two began to follow the hostess. She had led them into the elevator that took them up to the rooftop of the restaurant. The entire area was closed and empty, with a table decorated with a red table cloth, champagne on ice, two chairs, and a buffet of food with twinkle lights filling the area. "Your friend wanted you two to both have a lovely date. Please let me know if you need anything." Nodding as Rebecca spoke, Mina walked over to the spot made for them. "This is so beautiful." She said looking over at Elias. "Are you as nervous as I am?" She said laughing.

Mina had spent most of the day a bit nervous. The young vixen had been set up on a blind date through one of her friends and normally she was never one to do this. However she decided to step out of her element.and go through with it. She was young and pretty, so meeting guys wasn't difficult for her. Given the times though, men weren't that faithful or honest about things. Mina trusted her friend had her best interest in mind and wouldn't set her up with a complete loser. Even though she had nerves about all this, and didn't want to look desperate, her instincts told her to go through with it and meet the man for dinner. Either something good would come from it, or she'd have a great story to tell someone if it went bad. Either way, Mina still was nervous and was hoping for the best.

She had got to the restaurant a little early given that she was a very punctual person. Sitting at the bar, she looked around, trying to figure out who Elias would be. Her friend hadn't even shown her a photo as she wanted Mina to go in truly blind. She told Elias that she would be wearing a white dress. The dress she had on hugged her body tightly, and her hair was straightened down her back. Black heels on, with a white and gold studded purse hanging off her shoulder. Ordering herself a long island ice tea, she sipped on it as she awaited his arrival.
