The James-Younger Gang

"Folks take me for a nincompoop, on account of the shabby first impression I make, whereas I think of myself as being just a rung down from the James brothers. I was hoping if I ran into you aside from those peckerwoods, I could show you how special I am. I honestly believe I'm destined for great things, Mr. James. I got qualities that don't come shining through right at the outset. You give me a chance, I'll get the job done. I guarantee you that."

But Frank James didn't trust Bob Ford from the start. And as for Jesse, long the legendary idol of a starstruck Bob Ford, never fully trusted the kid, either. Had it not been for Bob's older brother, Charley, who had already ridden with the gang and participated in a few of their escapades, Bob never would've gotten remotely close to that den of murderous thieves he so worshipped since boyhood.

Jesse must have been feeling magnanimous to have given the overexuberant nineteen-year-old Bob Ford an opportunity to penetrate his world. Or, more likely, the mistake of taking Bob under his wing was born of Jesse's desperation as his life of crime was nearing its end, a dwindling circle of trusted associates making it difficult to form a new gang in later years.

About me:
Who I'd like to meet:

The Coward?: Robert Ford

"I been a nobody all my life. And ever since I can remember it, Jesse James has been as big as a tree."

When the Mighty Have Fallen

"I've been a nobody all my life. I was the baby. I was the one they made promises to that they never kept. And ever since I can remember it, jesse James has been as big as a tree. I'm prepared for this, Jim, and I'm gonna accomplish it. I know I won't get but this one opportunity, and you can bet your life I'm not gonna spoil it."

Bob hadn't started out wanting to murder Jesse James. If anything, he'd imagined being a best friend and confidante to the idol of his childhood. As he'd gotten older, Bob Ford's obsession with the fabricated legend of Jesse James came into dangerous conflict with the reality of Jesse - and the frightening reality of Bob's own delusions of grandeur through association with the notorious outlaw. The Ford family's fateful familiarity with Jesse's cousin, Wood Hite and a mutual outlaw acquaintance, Dick Liddel, would result in Hite's death at the end of Bob Ford's gun.

The death of Jesse's cousin was kept a secret for a time, until, when word finally got out, Bob and Dick Liddel were arrested. Ever the opportunist, eager for his own notoriety and disillusioned with his idol, Bob used his access to Jesse James in order to strike a deal with Missouri Governor Thomas Crittendon. Bob and his brother, Charley, stood to get thousands of dollars richer from the reward for killing Jesse.

The Price of Fame

Aftermath

He was ashamed of his boasting, his pretensions of courage and ruthlessness.

He was sorry about his cold-bloodedness, his dispassion, his inability to express what he now believed was the case:
That he truly regretted killing Jesse,
that he missed the man as much as anybody,
and wished his murder hadn't been necessary.

Even as he circulated his saloon, he knew that the smiles disappeared when he passed by.

He received so many menacing letters that he could read them without any reaction except curiosity.

-from The Assassination of Jesse James, by the Coward Robert Ford

Following the murder of Jesse James, Bob and Charley Ford were only paid a fraction of the reward money they had been promised by the authorities and Governor Crittenden. Only twenty years of age when he pulled the trigger that ended Jesse's life, Bob's sudden infamy was not the bright star of celebrity he had expected. Touting his alleged heroism through a traveling show called Outlaws of Missouri with the reluctant participation of his brother Charley, Bob reenacted his killing of Jesse James. Curious at first, audiences eventually became hostile toward Bob Ford, mirroring the public perception that Bob Ford was a coward for shooting "poor Jesse" in the back.

Ironically, Jesse James himself had been the target of mass public outrage in his later years, his Robin Hood reputation greatly at odds with his cold-blooded killings of Union officers and countless innocent civilians through the robberies and bloody trail left by the vengeful James-Younger gang.

Dirty Little Coward

"Why did you kill him?"

It was only with that Bob spoke revealingly or plainly, and it was with her that he spoke of things he didn't know he knew.

He told her that he had no real memory of the shooting and its aftermath.

He could remember lifting the gun that Jesse had given him...and then it was Good Friday and he was reading about the funeral proceedings as if they'd happened a long time ago.

-from The Assassination of Jesse James, by the Coward Robert Ford

"Do you want me to change the subject?"

In The Company of Doves

Dance Halls and Sweethearts

"You know what I expected? Applause."

"Why did you kill him?"

"Well, he was gonna kill me."

"So you were scared, and that's the only reason?"

"Yeah. And the reward money."

"Do you want me to change the subject?"

"You know what I expected? Applause.
I was only 20 years old then. I couldn't see how it would look to people. I was surprised by what happened.
They didn't applaud."

No need to apologize! I'd love to read your drabble(s) when you're done! Despite not knowing much of his work, I do appreciate you adding me even more so. I won't lie, his role of Brisco County Jr. was a short lived one, only one season, boo! And it wasn't historically accurate, a lot of it focusing on a supernatural orb. However, it can easily be written out as for half of the show it seems like a side plot. Anyway, Brisco County Jr. is a hired bounty hunter by a town in search of the infamous John Bly and his gang-- the man who killed his legendary Marshal father, Brisco County. He walks in his fathers shoes (despite not having the best relationship) as a bounty hunter, eventually teaming up with another bounty hunter enemy turned friend, Lord Bowler. I hope I explained it for you in an easily understandable way, and I'd love to work with you to make it more historically accurate or work it in somehow, if you're still interested!

Hey there! Thanks for adding me and taking a chance on me despite seeing horror king Ash--toot toot?--and being a western writer! Though Ash is my main muse, I do write as any role Bruce has played, and will admit I was maybe hoping I could finally try out his western role with you! I'd love to discuss if you're interested!
