Olivia Benson is the biological mother of Claire Benson aka Regina Rizzoli. Hours after her birth, Claire was kidnapped from the hospital by a drug addict that owed a great deal of debt in Boston. She was told to kidnap a baby and give it to her drug dealer, who also dealt in human trafficking. The addict opted to go across state lines and all the way to New York so the baby couldn't be easily tracked. Unfortunately for the woman, she kidnapped the newborn daughter of a cop.

Olivia was devastated when Claire was kidnapped and they searched everywhere for her, but were unable to find Claire, not knowing she had been taken all the way to Boston. She didn't hear about Claire for seven more years when her daughter was almost eight years old. A detective from Boston said that she hadn't known that her adoptive daughter was a victim of kidnapping and had adopted her and that Claire was extremely sick with leukemia and kidney failure as well as the fact that she needed a new kidney.

Olivia and Claire's biological father agreed to get tested, and luckily Olivia was a match. She donated a kidney to Claire, but also told Jane that she would be taking her daughter back once she was well enough to travel. Olivia had Claire transferred to a children's hospital in Manhattan where she spent a lot of her free time to begin to bond with her daughter.

Jane Rizzoli is the adoptive mother of Claire Benson aka Regina Rizzoli. Jane was working a case with narcotics when she stopped a human trafficking case between a drug addict who was selling a baby to pay off her debt and a drug lord who also dabbled into human trafficking. She later fell in love with the baby and adopted her, naming her Regina after her grandmother. Jane loved and raised the girl until shortly before her eighth birthday when Regina became really sick and was found passed out on the floor. She was rushed to the hospital where she was diagnosed with leukemia. Regina continued to get sicker and eventually needed a kidney transplant, but the list was so long that the chances of her getting a kidney were extremely low.

Jane and her family got themselves tested, but none of them were a match, so Jane went to the prison where the drug addicted woman was carrying out her sentence and worked out a deal where if the woman was a match and donated her kidney to her daughter then she would get a reduced sentence and some rehab. However, the woman revealed that she was not Regina's birth mother and that she had kidnapped her from a hospital in Manhattan, New York. Jane spent time tracking down Regina's birth mother out of desperation, knowing that there was a chance that she would not get to keep Regina afterwards.

Jane managed to locate Regina's birth mother, a captain of Manhattan's special victims unit, a woman by the name of Olivia Benson. She explained what had been happening for the past eight years and that Regina desperately needed a kidney or she would die. Olivia was thankful that her daughter Claire was alive and agreed to test to see if she was a match, stating that she would ask Claire's birth father as well. Claire's birth father, a man by the name of Rafael Barba also agreed to get tested. Luckily Olivia was a match and agreed to give her kidney to save her daughter's life, but told Jane that she would be taking Claire home with her once she was well enough to travel.
