Eve Catherine Sheffield. Three. Listed as a missing child. Adopted as a newborn. Living in Los Angeles. Eve Catherine Sheffield is the biological daughter of Fran Fine-Sheffield and Maxwell Sheffield. She was born with a crescent moon shaped birthmark on her left wrist. Eve was kidnapped shortly after their arrival in Los Angeles while Fran was shopping. Despite the best efforts of the police, Eve was unable to be located. Sold to a baby broker, Eve was then placed up for adoption as an "abandoned child". An older couple who were unable to conceive a child of their own was offered a chance to adopt the baby girl, who immediately fell in love with her, while her adoptive father Stuart Markowitz named the girl Kelsey after his wife and her adoptive mother Ann Kelsey.
Eve was raised as Kelsey for the next three years. The toddler simply adored her adoptive parents, though she had not learned that she was indeed adopted as she was far too young to understand what exactly that meant. Both Ann and Stuart doted on Kelsey and loved her as if she were their own flesh and blood. Due to an incident with their last nanny, a man by the name of Ned attempting to seduce Ann, they had yet to find a new nanny that could take care of Kelsey while they worked, especially with her severe life-threatening allergies, so they often brought her to work with them. Kelsey was incredibly well behaved and usually sat quietly drawing and coloring in her parent's offices.
One day while spending the day in her father's office, a couple came in with a need for Stuart's expertise in tax law after being recommended him by the husband's lawyer for entertainment law who also happened to work with them in the same law firm. The couple seemed to get along with Stuart, though they had yet to meet Ann. The couple brought a boy around Kelsey's age, but Kelsey was an incredibly shy girl and hid behind her father. As Stuart introduced them to Kelsey and was able to get his shy daughter to wave at the couple, they noticed that the toddler had a peculiar crescent moon shaped birthmark on her left wrist. The husband was a former Broadway turned Hollywood producer named Maxwell Sheffield, and his wife was his former nanny Fran. Fran immediately became suspicious of Kelsey as she had the same birthmark in the same place as their missing daughter Eve, who was Jonah's twin sister. When she brought this up to Maxwell, he too found it strange and Fran excused herself to ask some questions about Kelsey around the office, but no one wanted to answer if Kelsey was adopted or not.
When Fran returned, another woman was already in the room and Kelsey was in her arms. The woman was Stuart's wife Ann, who happened to be Kelsey's mother. Fran asked them if Kelsey was adopted, but Ann immediately became defensive and told her that it was none of her business. Maxwell told his wife to drop it as Kelsey could not be Evie as Evie had Fran's voice and Kelsey sounded relatively normal, something that upset Fran, not only due to her husband's insult about the sound of her nasally voice, but also because he wasn't even attempting to question that Kelsey had the same birthmark as Evie. She had blamed herself for the past three years for being responsible for Evie's abduction, and all she wanted was her little girl back.
As Fran begged the couple to let her get a DNA test to prove Kelsey was really Evie, Ann became furious stormed off with Kelsey into her office, locking the door behind her. Fran was so upset that she told her mother and grandmother. Her grandmother wasn't quite all there, and somehow managed to bring Kelsey to Fran, but when Fran asked Yetta why the small girl was with her, Yetta simply replied that she brought her to see Fran. Upon realizing that Yetta essentially kidnapped Kelsey, Fran tried to hide this from Maxwell, but he found out when he saw the small girl hiding and crying. He became furious with the both of them, but Fran insisted on at least collecting a DNA sample before returning Kelsey back to Ann and Stuart. He reluctantly agreed and they had the samples sent in to the police, who told them a few hours later that Kelsey was indeed their missing child.
When Ann and Stuart were informed of what had happened, Ann wanted Fran and her grandmother arrested for kidnapping, but were informed that Kelsey was really Fran and Maxwell's missing biological daughter Evie by the police. Ann refused to simply hand Kelsey over, and Kelsey was far too afraid of the Sheffield's. Ann and Stuart attempted to sue for custody, claiming that Fran was insane and had basically stalked Kelsey for months, but in the end they lost, even with Kelsey saying that Ann and Stuart were her mommy and daddy and that she loved them.
In order for Kelsey to get used to her biological family and not cause immense trauma to the toddler, they had Kelsey slowly get introduced to her biological family and her real name, but she didn't seem to understand and hated them, wanting to stay with her mommy and daddy. In the end, Maxwell managed to convince Fran that Evie wasn't adjusting to them, and that they needed to take it slower with her instead of forcing it until she was old enough to comprehend the situation, so her biological family would spend time with her while Ann and Stuart were working, with Fran watching her during those times as well as during alternating weekends until Evie was old enough to understand her situation.
