Lilith was a white-eyed demon[1] who was at one point human. She is the first demon to ever be created, her soul having been twisted by Lucifer as an act of spite against God that got him expelled from Heaven.[2] As such, she preceded both the Princes of Hell and the Knights of Hell.[3] Due to her status as the first demon, she is the last of the 66 Seals, with her death breaking the last seal and releasing Lucifer from the Cage he was imprisoned in for her creation.[4]
Originally, Lilith was imprisoned deep in Hell.[4] On Lucifer's command, Azazel arranges for her escape through the Devil's Gate in Wyoming.[5] After Azazel's death, Lilith asserted herself as the new leader of the army of demons he'd released and orders them to kill Sam Winchester, her "competition" as Azazel's successor.[1] Using her position as the "Queen of the Crossroads" with ultimate authority over all deals and contracts, Lilith manipulated a desperate Bela with the false promise of freeing her from her deal and had Bela doom herself by pitting her against the Winchesters.[6] Lilith arranged the Colt to be taken from the Winchesters, apparently sending her right-hand man and lover, Crowley, to collect the Colt from Bela, and leaving it in his possession after he had taken it.[7]
When Sam and Dean attack Lilith in attempt to kill her and break Dean's contract in order to save his soul from his deal (with Bela having informed them that Lilith holds his contract[6]), she captured them instead and kills Dean in front of Sam by setting a hellhound on him, sending Dean's soul to Hell. And attempted to kill Sam, to no avail.[8]
With Dean in Hell, Lilith began breaking the seals, starting with her having Alastair push Dean into breaking the first seal.[9] Meanwhile, Ruby manipulated Sam and strengthened his demonic powers on Lilith's orders, preparing him to kill Lilith and break the final seal. Eventually, at St. Mary's Convent, Lilith allowed Sam to kill her and, in doing so, free Lucifer.
Over ten years later, Lilith is resurrected by God as part of his plan to bring the Winchesters to a dark end, where one Winchester kills the other. Because of God's plan, she is forbidden from killing them. After she approaches Michael on God's behalf, the archangel smites Lilith. Lilith had white eyes (including pupils and irises). Her true face is not shown, but Dean described it as being "awful" when he sees it due to his approaching deadline. Lilith had an affinity for possessing pre-adolescent girls and was thus far the only demons known to possess children, though she also enjoyed possessing "grown-up and pretty" women.[1][8][12] She was a skilled torturer,[13] finding it fun to physically torture people before killing them or possess a young girl to terrify and kill her family.[14][8] In addition to possessing children, Lilith had a habit of drinking the blood of newborn babies kidnapped from maternity wards by her "personal chef".[12][2] She was knowledgeable of powerful spells, as she was credited for the Rise of the Witnesses.[14] She is older and more powerful than Yellow Eyes and thus holds a higher status than Azazel, although she don't get much higher than her until you start digging into Lucifer's territory.[15] Lilith is also said to be the Queen of Crossroads [16] and the Ruler of Witches.
Lilith was a powerful white-eyed demon and the first demon Lucifer created, as well as being the final seal of the 66 Seals that had to be broken for him to be freed from his cage. She was trapped in Hell until May 2007, when she escaped and effortlessly defeated multiple rival demons to take over the deceased Azazel's former position as leader of the army of demons that he had unleashed alongside her. Lilith led this army on Earth and commanded the rest of the forces of Hell in the War of the Seals against the Host of Heaven. She was responsible for the destruction of sixty-six seals guarding Lucifer's cage in 2008, ending with her allowing Sam Winchester to kill her and freeing Lucifer in 2009.[2][3][4] In the demonic hierarchy of Hell, she, as the original demon, ranked highest of all (beyond Alastair, The Knights of Hell, Cain, and the Princes of Hell), and was outranked only by Lucifer himself.
God demanded that angels bow to humans and love them more than him, but the archangel Lucifer refused because he saw humans as unworthy, for which he was cast from Heaven. Trying to prove to God that he was right about humanity's flaws, Lucifer "twisted and tempted" Lilith's soul into a demon. Because of this wicked act, God had Lucifer imprisoned in a cage by Michael as punishment for this unforgivable offense. The Cage was closed with over 600 seals, 66 of which had to be broken for Lucifer to escape. As Lilith had been Lucifer's first demon, she was also made into the 66th seal; thus, if she died after 65 of the seals had been broken, her death would set Lucifer free. As the oldest demon, Lilith was created before even Cain and the other Knights of Hell. Shortly after her creation, Lucifer turned four more humans into demons. These four, Azazel, Ramiel, Asmodeus and Dagon became the Princes of Hell
