Dahae Coraline Bertrand โ a brilliant journalist from France.
She has Korean, Chinese and Russian origins. Her both parents are the children of immigration.
Son Narae or Maria Bertrand as she has changed the name after her marriage was known as a talented Korean cello player. She was invited in Paris to play in the orchestra led by her future husband and the promising at that moment conductor โ Peter Bertrand whose parents moved from Soviet Union to France. Unfortunately, Dahae didnโt have a chance to meet them as they passed away even before their son finished the music academy. The only grandparent Dahae had was her granny from the momโs side as Mariaโs father suffered from the cancer and he died when Maria was pregnant with the daughter.
Dahae loves her grandmother a lot as the majority of her childhood memories is connected with grandmaโs house and garden. It was Son Mun-hee who started teaching Korean for a girl so she didnโt lose this part of her cultural heritage. She wished her granddaughter to stay in South Korea but the parents were insisting to give her European education. After giving birth to her first child Maria finished the career of musician and opened her own business โ the small chain of flower stores and gardening shops.
Her parents tried to dictate Dahae the steps of musician but she stayed only as a listener. They even tried to take her to the ballet school but soon she was expelled (which made the girl very happy as she hated those classes). However, those signals from her childhood were the first steps to the feeling of disappointment around her. She didnโt live up the parental hopes even though Dahae showed some talents. At the age of 14 she knew French, English and Korean languages and she even started working at the local newspaper (of course it was part-time job and she couldnโt write there). Dahae enjoyed the atmosphere and the fuss in the publishing house. Out of school (where the girl was one of the most excellent students) if she couldnโt work, the young Dahae spent time in libraries. Her main inspiring figure became Geneviรจve Tabouis. It was a huge turn in the life path of the girl. She started reading works of and about Tabouis. She was a woman wish such fantastic fate. Her work was an art and strongly connected with the way of the world. Dahae realized thatโs what she wanted and the maximalism of the youth turned into a volcano. She declared to her parents of her choice and they (who always tried to stay away from the political and social issues as much as possible) absolutely disagreed with their daughterโs decision. They refused to sponsor her study in the university, so she had to find the way out to study there free. Thatโs where her grandmother became the only person who supported Dahae โ thanks to her the young woman had a chance to study and graduate one of the best universities in France โ Paris Nanterre University. It was where her writing talent was noticed and developed.
all of this is all that i can take, and you could never understand the demons that i face.
Arigatou! I know I don't need to say it because you know I agree. We seem to share a lot of the same ideals on things like this. It's nice and it's helped us grow closer. I feel a few close friends is better than many. Those are the ones that matter and we should say on days like today that we care because sometimes I know I forget I'm not alone in this big world.
Certainly our art and love of it brought us together, it helped our friendship grow stronger. You'll always have it and know that I value you your friendship as much as you do mine.
Of course I will do my creations and you yours and of course there will be so many wonderful things we can accomplish together.
โThey do hard work pays off wherever but itโs a bigger payout in a bigger place.โ He smiled taking a sip from his cup then placing it down holding it with both hands. โBut Iโd say if youโre in the place to pick a photographer then youโve made it pretty far. It really means something to have so much creative control. Then you get to say, I want this, and tell me where to point and Iโll shoot it. You have to have the right eye to get the right shot though. Youโre a good writer and I have a good eye.โ He paused, smiling and nodding his head. โI think weโll make a great team.โ
He took a longer sip as he listened with interest. โOkay, of course. I can get started right away showing the dirty side of Paris.โ He agreed nodding his head. That was where his enjoyment of photographing abandoned sites came in handy. He knew of great spots to go to to take pictures of such scenes. Mentally he was already making a list of places to go.
โAlright, tomorrow around the same time as today?โ He asked wanting to be sure when she wanted him to come. When he left heโd go and scout and take few shots to bring with him tomorrow as samples.
Every moment, movement, he sized her up as he was sure she was doing to him just the same.ย She didnโt look or seem as professional as her articles and rรฉsumรฉ would have him think but the work was the important part. Besides that he needed this interview done to silence rumors.
The last thing he needed was a curious motivated journalist digging into his extra-curricular activities. If someone followed him around and saw something they shouldnโt see he would have to do away with them as well. Getting caught wasnโt something he was keen on and heโd had to dispose of nosy people before. It was most certainly not ideal because the journalist type would be searched for.
While they waited for her water he settled comfortably in his chair. He would never start business until they were both settled with drinks and Ito was back outside at his desk or at least on the other side of a closed door.ย
For a moment he remained quiet, unsure of how to start. This was his first formal interview and not even the interview yet. Not that it was bad to remain quiet, it only kept the mystery and the control over this meeting in his hands. He turned ever so slightly, opening the top left hand drawer in his desk and pulling out a folder. Placing it on the desk he opened it then looked over the first page. โIs this your first trip to Japan?โ He asked, still making small talk as he nodded, then closed the folder and pushed it across the desk to the other side. He made no mention of what it was simply expecting her to take it. It wasnโt bad, just the contract he needed her to look over and sign before they could actually commence with the interview in the following days and weeks.
โThe big city is not for everyone. Too many people, too much going on. I prefer a place less crowded for living. Maybe youโre more like me that way. As a Japanese citizen I didnโt feel comfortable in Tokyo, I prefered the village I grew up in.โ He nodded then shrugged. โPerhaps itโs not comfortable but we can find a comfortable place and Iโll want to stay.โ
He smiled back then accepted one cup with a small bow thanking her.ย
โThatโs good when some of us do contract workโฆ some think itโs because we canโt stand on our own but thatโs not the case at all. Maybe so many wanted the job to come to Paris. Everyone wants to come to Paris at least once in their life.โ He suggested then letting his fingers wrap around his cup, he lifted it and took and took a sip as he waited for her to continue speaking. He was curious what she would say, what she thought of what heโd submitted as samples of his work. Hearing her words he took another sip then set the cup down keeping his fingers wrapped around it. โIโm honored you would say so. I feel even in photography, just one photo should tell a story just as words can. Sometimes though with just the right words and just the right picture it can be even more meaningful.โ
Ceremony, it was important. It displayed his own importance and power. To some it might seem ridiculous but he had decided young heโd never be powerless again. He would be powerful, important. Therefore every move should convey that power. So it wasnโt until she had crossed the room that he stood again. Subtly he smoothed down his jacket then bowed. โOf course, thank you for your inquiry.โ He answered then again bowed, also gesturing to the chair opposite his own. โPlease, have a seat.โ He insisted.
ย
Sitting down again he pulled his chair forward under the desk glancing at his assistant expectantly waiting behind her. With a small nod he turned his gaze to her. โWould you care for anything to eat or drink before we begin? My assistant can get you anything you like.โ He offered waiting for her answer and observing her all at once.
ย
She seemed put together, confident and professional. Everything he'd discovered from his inquiries in to her but appearances could be deceptive. He would reserve his opinion of her until he'd known her longer but every sign pointed to the fact that professionally she could be trusted and at least her article or articles could aid in ceasing the countless inquiries about him.
โI find that to be true of a lot of cities. Itโs too beautiful here to get bored.โ He stated having found so much to see and do within the city. In fact heโd been before and kept coming back as it was an old city, historical, he couldnโt possibly have seen everything in one visit.
โHmmm...cappuccino sounds good.โ He answered with a nod, taking a seat on a kitchen stool. A brow arched at her comment. โYou did? Iโm glad you looked and liked it. Now you know Iโm not some hack photographer thatโll do work anyone could do.โ
"I really appreciate it. I love to try all the best of everything when I visit places. I've never seen any so amazing. Really thank you." He smiled looking down at them again then nodded. "Oh that would be amazing. Of course I'd be honored to help you try out your new coffee machine." Honestly he wasn't sure how he'd be able to talk after eating just part of one without something to wash it down though he was sure he'd love every minute of eating it.
He wasn't too sure about hugging in regards to her. He wouldn't mind it though it was something he would never have done before he left home. When she brought back her own offering his eyes went wide. "Oh wow! These look great. Thank you so much." He smiled bowing his head in thanks, it seemed the safest option.
