Iron Eagle : Johnny Lawrence
He closed his eyes tight as he remembered her blood curdling scream when he brought the kid back to her apartment after the Halloween dance at the high school. Things had just seemed to be going right for him. The kid was learning quick. He was getting stronger and stronger by the day. Only after Johnny had found his boy laid out on the locker room floor at the school, after being beat up by those f***ing rich, entitled f***ing pricks, did he realize that he had screwed up. He taught Miguel offense...but he failed to teach him about defense. There was nothing he could do but take the boy back home. His mother would have found out sure enough.

โ€I donโ€™t EVER want you near my son, EVER! Do you understand!?โ€

He held his head and sighed as he heard her words in his head. He sipped his coors, seated at the bar, and rubbed his forehead. Boy had he screwed up big time. She hated him. But why did she have to treat the kid like such a baby!? He was 15 years old for Christ's sake! A good ass kicking has probably done him some good. The harder they hit, the harder you get up and hit back, ten times as hard. She was a chick though; he couldnโ€™t expect chicks to understand that. He cracked open another peanut and tossed it in his mouth, putting his cold coors bottle against his forehead.

His mind was reeling. Replaying all the good times. This kid, Miguel, he had just come out of nowhere, into his life. He gave him a purpose. The kid looked up to him soo much, unconditionally. Johnny had never had anything like this before. Hell, his own kid hated his f***ing guts. Any time he tried reaching out, to make up for the past, the kid pushed him away. His kid resented him. But Miguel, despite all of Johnnyโ€™s flaws, Miguel seemed to love him unconditionally. Johnny felt so f***ing bad that the kid had gotten beat up by a gang of bullies. He felt one hundred percent responsible. But if they could just have more time together, train more...Johnny was sure he could make the kid even stronger. Make those bullies fear his name.

Miguelโ€™s mom. She was so pissed with him. The way she looked at him as if he was trash. The way a lot of other people in his life seemed to look at him. Something inside of him clicked. No. Not her. He didnโ€™t want her thinking that about him. He was slowly but surely getting his sh*t together. Miguel was the only good thing in his life at this point. He couldnโ€™t lose that kid. He needed that kid. And God did that kid need him. He didnโ€™t have a father and she seemed to have attachment issues with him. She needed to let that kid grow up. He downed the rest of his coors, wiped his mouth on his sleeve and got his wallet out, slapping a few bucks on the bar top and got up and left.

His heart raced in his chest as he drove down Reseda blvd in his paint chipped Firebird. Would she hear him out? Or would she cuss him out? He had to take another chance. He didnโ€™t want to lose Miguel. Pulling back up into his park at Reseda Flats Apartments, he got out of his car and looked across the courtyard to their decorated door. He gulped, running a hand through his golden locks and clenched his fists, nodding his head then casually made his way across the courtyard to their apartment. He hesitated, then knocked on the door with a firm knock that echoed throughout the courtyard. He could feel a warmth surge through him when the door opened, and there she was, Miguelโ€™s mom. He saw the look on her face when she saw him. It sucked.

โ€œPlease donโ€™t close the door!โ€ He pleaded.

โ€œLook, I know I screwed up big time. I take full responsibility for what happened. It was on me. But...if you let him come back, I promise...I swear, Iโ€™ll look out for him. I wonโ€™t screw up again. I need that kid. That kidโ€™s the only one who hasnโ€™t given up on me! And if you let him come back, I wonโ€™t fail him again.โ€

He looked straight into her eyes as he spoke.

โ€œJust think about it. Okay? Well. Good night.โ€

He had gotten out what he needed to say. She was still looking at him with that look. He nodded his head and turned, walking off, back to his apartment. He didnโ€™t look back.

***

The next day he woke up with a sour demeanor. He was sure that this karate thing was over. He loved karate so much, and training Miguel helped him rekindle that love. He should have never let it go. But what Kreese had done to him had been so traumatizing. He was ready to face the facts...he would have to let the dojo go, no one seemed to want to join anyway...and now heโ€™d lost his only student. Heโ€™d have to go back to doing sh*tty contractor work full time. Life sucked.

He came out of his apartment, locking the door and made his way to his car, looking down. He was going to go drive around and see if any contracting place was hiring. He put his hand on his car door handle.
