He was lost in thought, desire, happiness....a mixture of all and maybe more.  He had never been able to get what he truly wanted; a villain or obstacle always messed it up somehow.  He admired Clint for maintaining a marriage and family while being an Avenger at the same time.  This job was far from easy, and it was even harder to form solid connections, let alone love.  That was why most SHIELD people were alone, very few had relationships.

A sly smirk spread across his lips, and he shook his head.  "I make no promises on that front, Nat.  Sorry."  He shrugged playfully, his eyes still lit up with goofy delight.  "Hey hey, no more crying, hmm?"  He placed both hands on her cheeks and pressed his forehead against hers.  A smile appeared after a moment, and he nodded.  "I would like nothing more, Nat."

In some ways, Steve was relieved that she'd said something, for both of them had clearly been feeling this way for a while now.  Both were scared and unsure when it came to love, but somehow not with each other.  Natasha definitely wasn't the type of woman that Steve usually went for, but he'd judged her a little too quickly at first.  Once he knew her and that she was truly on their side, their friendship kickstarted fast.  And over time, became more than that.  But this was definitely something that he wanted to take slow with her, and be cautious.  Steve knew what Natasha had had to endure from men over the years, which made her retreat into herself when it came to love.

Seeing Natasha soft and sweet like this was a true first for the Super Soldier.  She never showed this much emotion, not even to Clint.  She was so closed up and withdrawn, and was usually all business.  The pretty face was usually a cover of some type, although she was definitely beautiful in Steve's eyes.  Her comment made his eyes light up as he grinned, trying not to chuckle.  "You, afraid?  No way."  He teased her, then went serious again.  "I know, but that's not true at all, Nat.  You deserve someone who wants you, loves you, needs you.  I want all of those things, and I want them with you...."  There was a soft seriousness, an urgency to his voice.  He meant every word, and it still surprised him that he could feel this deeply.   The smile on his face grew now, sweet and charming as he was.  "Are you asking to be my girl, Romanoff?"  He smirked.

Now he was nervous, and feared that he may have taken things a bit too far.  Sex was a completely new concept to Steve, but to Natasha, probably not.  That was something he was very old-fashioned about, and wanted desperately for his first time to be with the right person and the right circumstances.  Natasha was probably a lot more experienced than he in that aspect, but this was not something he was taking lightly.  Steve was like a frightened deer, and everything needed to be perfect.  But he was also pushing his own buttons, and all she was doing was responding.

Once he heard her utter those perfect words, he froze for just a second.  She surprised him, but in a good way.  He had felt something for Natasha for a while now, Peggy or no Peggy.  His heart was healed for the most part, but he couldn't be miserable forever.  His arms moved around her torso, hugging her closer as his eyes never left hers.  "Nat, I....I love you too.  I have for a while now, I was just scared...."

How had Natasha managed to capture his heart?  He wondered how and why, for he'd been hung up on Peggy as long as he could remember.  Closure was what he'd needed to close that door, but he knew the minute he'd crashed that plane that he'd lost his chance at any kind of future with her.  Even the alternate timeline had crashed and burned, and for a while after he'd felt very defeated.  But Natasha and he had always had sort of an unspoken connection to the other; they both knew it and were both scared.  But he also had never had a second chance before, so he didn't want to ruin it.

He wasn't afraid anymore, and when he felt her respond by cradling his head and kissing him back, he pulled her into his lap.  His breathing quickened, his heart raced, but this was the most of anything that he'd felt since he'd learned of Peggy's death.  He needed this, they needed each other, and he had no further intentions of letting anything hurt Natasha ever again, even if it cost him his life.  As he kissed her, he brought his hands to her hips, squeezing lightly.  After a moment or two, he pulled away gently, then saw her tears.  Pressing his forehead to hers, his expression changed to one of concern and worry.  "Hey, hey, what's wrong?"  He whispered in a soft tone, eyes locking onto hers.

The only person that Steve had ever let into his heart was Peggy.  That was why his pain hurt so bad at the current moment.  Hearing that news was gut-wrenching, and he was still healing.  But whatever this was....this curiosity about Natasha, it didn't seem like it was just him feeling this way.  She felt something too, and the air between the two sparked with electricity now.  Sure, when she'd helped him with Bucky he'd been getting to know her and trust her, but when she kissed him, that felt real.  That, or she was an incredibly good actress.  He was still clueless with women, but Natasha had him feeling almost like normal.

He took a few more sips of his beer and looked up at her.  "I wish I had an explanation as to why you're back.  Clint said it wasn't possible, at all...."  He shook his head.  "As of right now, with all we've seen and been through, I'm starting to believe that not much is impossible."  He chuckled dryly.  "Yeah, he's complicated."

He had barely gotten the words out before Natasha was hugging him again, but this time he practically melted into her embrace.  He missed the smell of her, how soft her hair was, how her tiny body fit in his arms.  Yep, he had it bad.  But how the heck was he going to tell her?  His arms pulled her closer to him, sighing softly.  "Nat, I really missed you...."  He whispered, pulling back to look at her.  She was so close to him that he could feel her breath on his lips, intoxicating him.  He wasn't scared anymore, so he just acted.  Without giving it a second thought, he leaned in and pressed his lips to hers.

Why did he get the sense that she was scared?  Unsure?  Steve had never once seen that side of Natasha, but that didn't mean it didn’t exist.  Everyone was afraid of something, even her.  She just didn't like letting it show.  But Steve knew better, he knew her very well, actually.  Neither one was particularly comfortable with letting their vulnerabilities show, but they had a special bond, much like her and Clint.

Sitting on the couch, he patted the seat beside him and handed her a beer.  "Wanda?  No, she couldn't do that, Nat...."  He tilted his head, pondering Nat’s almost accusation of the young witch.  "She's the only one I know of besides Strange...."  He looked at his beer, then sipped it.  "I, uh....I wouldn't know, Nat.  I haven't exactly been here."  He sighed heavily, not sure if he wanted to talk about this yet, but she needed to know everything.  It was only fair.  "After we beat Thanos and had the memorial for everyone, I took all the stones back to where they belonged.  With Scott's suit, I went back for a second chance.  For a life with Peggy...."  He stopped, his voice shaking as tears filled his eyes again.  "When I got there, I found Howard, and he told me about her death.  I only stayed there for six months, and just came back yesterday."

Something was in her eyes now, something neither one could explain. It was still, silent, and unspoken. Instinctively, his eyes traveled for a brief second to her lips. Should he, would he, could he? Steve had always had no clue when it came to women, and that had not changed with time. He was still shy, reserved, afraid, delicate even. While his body and muscles gave him a good armor, Steve Rogers was one of the most kind-hearted individuals on the face of the planet. But Natasha....she knew him, better than almost anyone. Letting anyone in since Peggy seemed....impossible.

After a moment or two, he let her go and went to go grab two beers from his fridge. "Magic? You think Wanda had something to do with this? Do you think she's even powerful enough?" He walked to the couch with her, thinking hard now. "I haven't heard from her, I don't like that...."

Steve never could deny that Natasha was a bit....distant and cut off.  She never revealed a lot of herself, and for good reason.  Even Steve didn’t know all of her secrets, but he did consider her one of his best friends.  He hadn't trusted her at first, but that changed fast.  She had proved herself time and time again, and she had stayed by Steve's side when the whole Bucky fiasco went down.  Hell, she had more info about him than Steve did.  He made a mental note to ask her about that later.

But there was a different vibe between the two now; he'd sensed it the moment he saw her.  There was attraction, electricity, even desire, perhaps?  No, that was silly.  Him and Nat?  She wasn't exactly his type, but he felt something.  Once he saw her standing in his kitchen, his heart had practically leapt out of his chest.  It struck him as a surprise, since he'd only just mourned the loss of Peggy.  Hearing her voice soothe him, he sighed deeply and kept holding her.  After a few minutes, he pulled back to look at her.  "I still don't get how you're even here.  It's just....some miracle."  His voice shook as he met her eyes.

He approached her cautiously, hands balled into fists at his sides.  His expression wasn't angry, just confused.  What was this, who was this?  Who would do something this cruel?  He'd had a hard enough time accepting that Bucky was still alive, and things between the two were quite strained now.  He had to be on his guard all the time now, even more so than before.  Everything was different now, quieter and less alive.  The whole world that he'd come back to was hard to recognize now.  Even hearing her speak sounded convincing, but Steve wasn't convinced.

He stood right before her now, only two feet in front of her.  It all looked the same: the red hair, the emerald green eyes, the lean figure, the cold distance in her eyes.  "I'm not gonna ask you again: who are you?"  He demanded, his hands grabbed both of her shoulders and backed her against the nearest wall, and he wasn't gentle about it either.  As she went into her explanation and what had happened with Clint, Steve's eyes narrowed.  Clint had told this story to the Avengers when he'd returned without Natasha, and he said there wasn't anything anyone could have done to revive Natasha.  So how was she here?  "How do I know you're really Natasha?"  Then it dawned on him; find an identifying mark, like a scar or a birthmark.  He remembered Natasha showing him her Soviet Slug scar on her stomach.  Carefully, Steve lifted her shirt, afraid of what he may or may not see.  Once her skin was exposed, there it was, the scar.  It was real, she was real.

"Nat...."  Steve's voice broke and he couldn't hold back anymore; he broke down in tears now as he pulled her in a tight hug against his chest.  He didn't know what to say or think, he was just happy she was here.

Once out of the shower, he quickly threw on some clothes as he listened for more noises in his apartment.  Whoever it was, they were being quiet, but Super Solider hearing was superb.  As an ordinary man, he'd not have heard a thing, but he needed to know who was in his home uninvited and why.  He'd had enough of unwanted guests, and trusted very few people anymore.  Even he and Bucky didn't talk much anymore.  Steve had lost too much; anyone would be closed off after all of that.  The world and the universe hadn't been the same after the war with Thanos.  But nothing, absolutely nothing could have prepared him for who was in his apartment.

As he slowly made his way through the hall, he saw the broken glass on the carpet by the window.  There was also a rock on the floor, but once he was around the corner, the sound of creaking floorboards caused his head to snap up in the direction of the noise.  There she was: Natasha Romanoff, in the flesh.  But how?  She was dead, and they'd tried to bring her back, with zero luck.  His mouth opened in surprise, but he didn't say anything at first.  Was this a trick, a shape-shifter?  Tears were pooling in his eyes now, but he wanted this to be real.  Was it?  Was it just a dream, something that he desperately wanted but could never have?

A few moments went by, and he never took his gaze off of her.  Slowly, he approached where she stood, studying her.  "Who-who are you?  Get out of my apartment...."  He stammered, but something was telling him that she was the real Natasha.  "No, y-you're dead...."  He mumbled, and confusion began to set in.  She still looked the same, just under more stress.  How was this possible?
