John Constantine was born in Liverpool, Lancashire. Mary Anne, his mother, passed away while giving birth to John and his stillborn twin brother. As a result, his father, Thomas Constantine, blamed John for her death, and the two shared nothing but disdain for each other as John grew up.
In his adolescence, John lived with his aunt and uncle in Northampton to avoid his fatherβs contempt and alcoholism. It was during this time that he developed an affinity for the study of the occult, which began with an interest in the Tarot cards.
His aunt and uncle would inform him that he comes from a bloodline rooted in occult studies and practices. Known as the Laughing Magicians, the legendary mages of his family were notorious for being tricksters and for tricking Gods.
In his late twenties, Constantine and his close friends created a punk rock band called the Mucus Membranes, which was a short-lived project that produced anti-establishment music. Though his time as the lead singer was not a success, this period of his life brought life-changing events.
First, there was the lifelong friendship with Chas, his close friend and taxi driver that joins him on his countless travels across countries and dimensions both physical and in astral form when itβs required.
Second, there is the botched ritual Constantine performed for attendees at a house party his band was performing in. This failed ritual subsequently subjected a friendβs younger sister to eternal damnation.
Itβs been years since the mistake, but Constantine has dedicated his time and effort to rescuing the girl and bringing her safely back to her remaining family.

Constantine divides his time between the United States and London.
As a profession, he is an occult detective, investigating the paranormal for personal reasons and for clients. He often crosses paths with numerous heroes, who enlist him for his paranormal procedures. This includes heroes like [redacted], [redacted], and [redacted]. This also means that the partnerships have resulted in life threatening or globally catastrophic events that have been resolved just in time to make it back home for a brew and reruns of Downton Abbey.
As well, Constantine provides divinatory services that extend from Tarot readings to astrological birth charts, employing a vast knowledge of the occult. He has conducted the occasional exorcism or two, and the money acquired goes towards trying to correct the mistakes of the past.
In the end, Constantine attempts to live a quiet life amongst the collective, but we all know the unconscious is louder than one can imagine.
