Born to Lothrandir, ranger of the north, Caleneth never stayed at one place when she was of age, but traveled together with her father through Middle-Earth, and later with the Grey Company at Aragorn's (and her father's) side.
Caleneth never knew her mother. She died while giving birth to her only daughter (and offspring). This, however, pained her only little, for her father had married another once he was ready, so the stepmother was the only mother she ever knew. She was a kind woman.
When still a child Caleneth lived at a safely hidden place in Eriador with other women and children. It is known that the Dúnedain are small in number and that women of their kind are scarce. Therefore, the females are greatly protected and expected to marry one of their own. However, Caleneth was never one to do women's work, or do what was expected of women of her kind. She admired her father and wanted to become a ranger just like him, so she practiced archery and sword fighting from already a young age. First there was resistance from multiple sides of the household, but in the end her father gave in and allowed her to train. She learned everything what a ranger should know.
When old enough Lothrandir brought her on many adventures. Some were perhaps too dangerous, but Caleneth had no regret of her decision. Lothrandir still expects her to marry one of the other Dúnedain men someday, as to continue their long lifespans (even though it was rapidly fading). But if it depends on her, that will never happen. She is too adventurous to be a simple wife, let alone be a mother.
