tarnished

December 8th, 2023.
Providence, Rhode Island.

The moment that her legs started wiggling on the top rope, she knew something wasn’t right. Her momentum was already floating her forward and her leg twisted itself into the top rope as she tumbled her way down to the ring.

It was terrible, what had just happened. She actually couldn’t believe it. First, her moonsault didn’t go as planned, and now this? The immense pain that she was in right now was almost more than she could bear. Charles Robinson had quickly come to her rescue, asking her if she was okay to continue. Of course, she was. She wasn’t going to let something like a tweaked knee get in the way of finishing her match.

Except.. when she kicked out of Asuka’s pin and tried to stand up on her own, she knew something wasn’t right. She could barely put her weight on it. It hurt like a bitch and she still had a whole match ahead of her. She didn’t know how she was going to do it. Move after move, it seemed to everyone else like she was just assaulting her leg. Doing more and more damage to it as minutes ticked by. It was the referee who decided to put a stop to it, not Charlotte. He did a quick count and ended it to spare any further injury that she was willing to put herself through.

It must have been the adrenaline that was coursing through her during the match, because by the time it was over and everyone was leaving the ring to set up for the next match she was barely able to get up into a sitting position. She scooted around on the mat, trying to muster up enough courage and strength to stand up, but it wasn’t working.

My knee…” she gasped out, finally coming to terms that something was terribly wrong. This wasn’t something that she could shake off like nothing happened. She started to get scared. What was happening? Why couldn’t she just stand up? “My knee… oh sh*t…” she whined out, the pain on her face evident now that the world was slowly closing in on her. She tried to get up again, but Charles Robinson, again, wasn’t going to let her further injure herself with her larger-than-life ego. He called for backup because it was clear that Charlotte wasn’t going to be able to walk out of the ring by herself and she had too much muscle on her body for him to solely help her backstage.

It took two people on either side of her to help her to her feet. Standing at her full 5’10” height, with her arms hanging over her two supporters, she tried to hobble a few steps toward the ropes. The pain in her knee twisted her face up, but she swore she wasn’t going to cry. Charlotte Flair didn’t cry in front of people. That’s not what she was bred and born to do. She was tough and indestructible. She didn’t get injured. She was born for this.

In all of her pain, as she was helped out of the ring and up the ramp, she had totally forgotten about her Dad. She was going to have to face him at the end of all this. Hearing him fire questions at her wasn’t something that she was in a mindset to handle right now.

What happened?
What were you thinking?
This isn’t like you.
Where was your ring awareness?
You’re a third-generation superstar.

Injuries don’t happen when you’re genetically superior.. yet here she was, hobbling backstage because she wasn’t able to walk on her own. It was extremely embarrassing and bruised her ego to have people watching and asking her if she was okay and if she needed help. She wanted to scream that she was fine.. to get out of her face. But she had to face the truth, there was no way she was getting out of this arena on her own, much less survive the doctor’s analysis and the weeks to come after this.

She was going to have to do something that she’d never done; she was going to have to rely on the support of other people to keep her head above water.

Busted Open Podcast.

 fdfdfdfddfdfdfdfdfkjfhaelhfakwjefhskjfasdhfdfdfmvvsdmdmdmdfdff;

January 28th, 2023.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Sonya Deville talks to Dave Lagreca and Sam Roberts on SiriusXM Busted Open about being immediately put into a story with Charlotte Flair, what she learned as GM, adapting as a performer, and more, on Notsam Wrestling.

Dave Legreca: So, we just saw an amazing Raw 30 where they brought back legends and there was a 3 hour show.. it was a good time. What was that like for you to get to be apart of that?

Sonya Deville: It was incredible. I mean, I love being in the company of legends and legends to be and I felt like I belonged there. So, I had to show up and make a little appearance to let Charlotte Flair know that I was on her coattails and ready to take that title from her.

Sam Roberts: Yeah, it's been kind of amazing to watch you over the past few weeks because Charlotte shocks the world by returning and kind of throwing everything on its head and becoming the Women's Champion once again; immediately. And you just stepped right up. Like just to say.. 'we're not waiting.. this is the time'. Was this an opportunity that you were just waiting for? Did you resent that Charlotte came in and decided to take the title for herself right away? What motivated that?

Sonya: Well, I've had my eye on the title for a long time now. Um, but I think it's been a process and an evolution to get to where I am now. I was GM for a while and I acquired a lot of knowledge during that time. I did a lot of homework on certain Superstars, so to speak, and the second that the title went on Charlotte, I knew that I wanted to go toe-to-toe with her. She's got something that I've always found admirable in some senses but, I also think that there's also a bit of smoke and mirror with her and I think that if there's anyone that's able to poke holes through her exterior; it's Sonya Deville.

Dave: Well, that's interesting because.. I've said this on Busted Open many times, I think Charlotte Flair is the best, she's the greatest, and I really do feel that way. If you look at what she's able to do in the ring.. BUT everybody has somebody that when they go head-to-head with someone, they have that certain advantage and you feel like you have that advantage over Charlotte?

Sonya: I do, and that's what I was just saying before.. is that I do think Charlotte is the best to ever do it. 100%. That's why when she got the title, it meant so much to me because now, not only am I going after the championship, but I'm going after something that's a bit more personal. Charlotte Flair is THE person to beat. She's the pinnacle in the women's division right now. So, my admiration, mixed with my distain, is why I think I'm the perfect person to throw her off her toes.

Sam: Right. And not only do you want to be the champion, but you want to beat the champion that Dave over here says is the best. Who he's implying is better than you, which is kind of rude.

Dave: No, I don't think it's rude. You have to take it in consideration the amount of reigns and who's champion right now. Like you have to. Though, I will say this, you talked about the GM role that you had and I think you did a great job. We saw a different side of you when you were GM but I did want to see you back in the ring. Did you feel that way? Was there something missing in that GM role when you weren't able to compete?

Sonya: Yeah, I took a lot of pride in the GM role because I think it's really cool that I was able to be in that position. I think that Stephanie, Paige, and myself, were lucky enough to fill that role and I take a lot of pride in myself because we got to see a whole other side of Sonya that we didn't know existed. At the end of the day, I'm a fighter. I started here as a fighter and I'm going to end here as a fighter. So that urge and itch inside of me never went away. All of those months that I sat there doing that, being in the segments with the other women, being in the title picture as a woman and not as a competitor was really hard to do. The segment I was in with Charlotte and Becky when I was holding the titles for them in the middle of the ring.. I was thinking.. 'I should be in the title picture.' So, I think it was just a year long journey in a full circle to get back to where I belong.

Sam: And I'm glad you brought that up, I was thinking about that era as well. Do you think that people forgot that you were that level of a competitor? Because I think you gained a lot of fans who loved your performance as a GM. That you got to go out there and be entertaining, but, people may have forgotten you were a competitor. That you're a beast. That you came into this world from MMA and this is what you do. Do you think people forgot to consider that part of you?

Sonya: I think it's like... it's such a double-edged sword because when I was a badass MMA fighter I don't think people thought I had the ability to speak on the mic the way that I have in the most recent years. So, I think I gained their respect in that facet. But, then they forget about the MMA, which is.. you can only get one or the other.. and I feel like I'm finally getting into the groove where it doesn't have to be one or the other and I can do it all. I am well rounded, I can sit there and make my opponents feel terrible about themselves and want to cry to their moms. I love it.

Dave: But, I think a lot of people sometimes, myself included, forget about your MMA background because you're so good at what you're doing right now. Because you shine so much, people probably forget your past. And that's a compliment more than anything else. Because it looked like the transition was almost seamless.

Sonya: Thank you. Um, but you know what? A really important thing to me; when Ronda and Shayna got signed was 'okay.. now there's a lot of us that come from a fighting background' I was one of the first ones to come from MMA and into the WWE, and then it was like okay, it's not the cool thing anymore because there's a bunch of us and those girls are really badass. So, I really took a lot of pride in trying to differentiate myself and provide a lot of depth so I wasn't JUST the fighter. I didn't want to be just one thing. Not one dimensional. And, god forbid, if that didn't work out.. or there's too many of us, then I'd be left out of a spot. So when I started developing the Sonya character with Superstars in the past vs the Sonya that you see now.. I enjoyed doing that because it showed that there's was more places that I could go with it.

Sam: When did it really click in for you? Because you're like one of the rare cases that if fans want to, they can go onto Peac*ck or Youtube and literally follow your whole career. They get to see you in Tough Enough as someone who didn't really know quite what to make of anything. It was your first time experiencing this whole world as opposed to now where you're the most comfortable Superstar that I've seen in the ring, in front of an arena or stadium full of people. When do you think that moment kind of clicked in where you were like 'yeah, I'm prepared to call myself the best at this'?

Sonya: I think the greatest I've ever been is within these last couple of months. I've really been falling back into my groove. Every single storyline I've been part of has been part of my character development that I've gotten to use. Right now is my time. Right now is where I think Sonya Deville thrives and feels comfortable. I feel comfortable every time I go out there, truly. It's not an act. I've been here for 7 1/2 years and I've gotten to try so many things and be put in storylines with so many people. Working with Dolph Ziggler 2 years ago was so cool and learning from him and just being thrown in with so many different characters. Taking that GM role, for sure, leveled up my confidence on the mic because I was getting these like 5-6 segments back to back a week. It was like getting reps that I needed and now I'm getting the reps back in the ring that I really needed since I was out of the ring for 2 years. So, I think right now is my time.

Dave: Sonya, for you, people dislike the character that they see on Smackdown every Friday night but yet if you read social media; they love you as a person. How do you work that balance between what they see on TV and who you really are?

Sonya: I'm not doing my job unless they hate me. Like I LOVE being hated. I really do. It's my passion.

Sam: it goes back to making people cry to their mothers.

Dave: So it doesn't bother you that people like you so much off their screen?

Sonya: No, because I feel like the fans know. They know when Sonya comes out, they're booing the crap out of me and it's undeniable. It's like.. what I say and do on the mic? You can't like me in that moment. But then if you flip over to my Instagram and you find what I posted relatable, then great. You can follow my journey, but I think they understand that Sonya is a character and she's super hateable.

Dave: See, now after talking to you and knowing how much those Jersey roots come out, it's impossible for me to go against you. See, Sam? I'm very conflicted.

Sonya: Ahh, come onnnnnnnnn.

Sam: Dave,.. literally in this interview you said someone else was the best, but go ahead.

Sonya: He did, he did.

Dave: Hey, I get it. You're very busy. It's the Royal Rumble. Enjoy the moments and thank you for your time.

Sam: And nice watch, by the way.

Sonya: Thank you. Can you believe we're twinning? We have the same watch. Anyways, thanks guys, you're awesome.

Interview with Ryan Satin on "Out Of Character".

Sonya thought it would be a good idea to crash Charlotte's interview that she was having with Ryan Satin. His show and podcast called Out Of Character was a pretty big deal to the WWE community, considering it held a lot of information from the Superstars exclusively and wasn't another rumor mill like most of the tabloid blogs were.

If Charlotte didn't want to pay attention to her, then Sonya was going to make her. The blonde seemed pretty comfortable in her pink matching suit, and Sonya loving nothing more than knowing she was going to be thorn in her side right now.

She could see how visibly uncomfortable she had just made Charlotte as she strolled right into the room and disrupted their interview. Sonya took next to Ryan and started clapping her hands in the most condescending way; pretending that what Charlotte had to say was something of relevance when she couldn't care less.

"Well, you know I was on Raw and she was there with her Smackdown championship. And now she's here, so it looks like Charlotte Flair goes wherever she wants." her hand was on the back of Ryan's chair and she used it to support her body as she crossed her legs at her ankles and presumed a more natural, relaxed stance. Almost like Charlotte's presence didn't affect her one bit. She was actually enjoying herself. It wasn't often that people were able to get the Queen to drop her pristine exterior.

Sonya didn't get to stay long, though. Security caught on and interrupted her from causing anymore commotion than she already was. Charlotte hadn't said one word to her; but she didn't have to. Sonya knew that she had gotten under her skin. She came here and did what she needed to do.

She put her hands up in the air in a surrendering position and backed herself out of the room, signaling that she was done raining on the Queen's parade... for now.

i WILL get my rematch.

January 6th, 2023.
Memphis, Tennessee.

Sonya was all about taking things into her own hands. She had been General Manager of Smackdown for a reason; because of her ability to get stuff done without any bullsh*t. Now that Ronda Rousey was out of the picture and there was a new champ in town, it was time for Sonya to cash in on a few favors. Her and Charlotte had formed somewhat of an alliance when she was GM and Sonya had pulled a few strings to get Charlotte what she wanted. Like championship opportunities that she didn't exactly qualify for.

In the middle of the ring, Charlotte was gloating about how she was a 14x champion now that she'd defeated Ronda, and, yeah, that was cool of her to do, but Sonya had even cooler plans in mind. She was going to take that championship from Charlotte by any means necessary. So, she decided to interrupt the charade that was happening in the ring.

"Hold the phone, it's Sonya Deville!" -Michael Cole

"First of all, ladies and gentleman, Charlotte Flair!" she said into the microphone, giving the champ all of her kudos before she was about to tear her castle down.

"Charlotte... here's the thing, the hillbillies in this city might not be bright enough to see through your lies, but, fortunately for them, I do." the crowd didn't like that and she was greeted by boo's that filled her ego up to the brim until it was spilling over. "You're standing out here bragging about being a fourteen time champion.. but the thing is.. I think there needs to be an asterisk next to the number fourteen. Right? I mean, what.. you beat a half dead Ronda Rousey? CONGRATULATIONS!" she laughed at her own sarcastic joke; she really was funny when she wanted to be even though the city of Memphis didn't exactly think so. But she didn't care what they thought.

WHOOP THAT TRICK!
WHOOP THAT TRICK!
WHOOP THAT TRICK!

Wow, the crowd really didn't like her tonight. This was great. She was almost too stunned to speak. She lost her train of thought for a moment while trying to prevent herself from laughing. It was funny. "So, my question for you.." she had to yell into the microphone. the chants against her were deafening. "..is how would you fair against a fresh fighter?"

Charlotte was trying to get Sonya to back away, but she already had a fire in her eyes. Much like Charlotte did in her own way. She knew that the champ wouldn't be able to turn down a fight when she was being called out face to face. No, that would tarnish her ego. Sonya knew what she was doing and she knew what Charlotte's answer was going to be before she even walked out to the ring.

"Oh, guys, she's the fighter!"

"Damn right I'm the fighter. And you want to prove that you're the champ? Put your title on the line.. right now."

"You're on,..trick." the blonde said with a smile that Sonya couldn't wait to slap off her face.

One minute and eighteen seconds later, Sonya was knocked out cold.

January 13th, 2023.
Detroit, Michigan.

Sonya is seen backstage in a heated argument with Adam Pearce.

Sonya: I don't even know why I came in here. You're unreasonable. I can't even speak to you. What I'm saying.. for the fifth time.. I. want. a. rematch. against. Charlotte. Flair. Is that so hard?
Adam: I understand what you're saying. I just can't give you a rematch. You lost. That's not how it works, Sonya.
Sonya: Oh, really? You're gonna tell me how it works around here? That's interesting. Or.. are you telling me how it works around here for.. Charlotte Flair?
Adam: Let's think about this for a second. All Charlotte did was exactly what you did. She walked down to the ring and she called her shot against Ronda Rousey. You walked down to the ring and you called your shot against Charlotte Flair. The only difference is: Charlotte won and you lost.
Sonya: You know what's so interesting to me? How unreasonable you're being with me. Let me guess... you probably want me to enter the Royal Rumble and earn another opportunity by what? Mauling 29 other women to get back to Charlotte.. where I already am?
Adam: YEEEAHHHH.
Sonya: I'm going to find a way to make that rematch official.

Chaos is erupting backstage seemingly out of nowhere.

Sonya was going to make due on her threat to Adam when she said she was going to find a way to get her well-deserved rematch against Charlotte. And if that meant that Sonya had to ambush her backstage and kick her ass, then that's what she was going to have to do. She didn't have any other choice. She didn't make the rules.

She hid behind one of equipment trunks backstage and waited Charlotte out. It was like she was a hunter, stalking her prey. Her vision switched from normal to a tinge of red around the edges. She could feel the blood pulsing through her veins when she saw Charlotte appear in a hot pink one piece outfit. Cute..

She waited until her back was turned.. when she was her most vulnerable.. and then she pounced. Two women with their arms flailing and both trying to defend themselves against each other's attacks. Charlotte wasn't going down without a fight, and Sonya was aiming to leave a mark that the other woman wasn't going to easily forget. She was going to get her rematch and if it meant pissing off the Queen, then she was going to do it.. happily. It was an all out brawl. Black and blonde hair flying all over the place as security personnel tried their best to pull the two women away from each other. It worked.. for a second. A brief pause in chaos allowed the women to hurl one another at each other again.

All Sonya could see was red, red, red.

daria is smowl.

Daria was really little when she started feeling… things…for other kids in her class. She wasn’t that old. Hell, she was what? Five? Six? All she knew was that boys were icky and they had cooties. At least that’s what she and her friends chanted when they held hands and ran around in circles during recess. You know… the whole “boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider”? That was her favorite part of the rhyme. She didn’t like the boys, but she often found herself hanging around them. She wasn’t afraid to be a tomboy. She wasn’t afraid to get dirty on the playground; fingernails brown underneath from digging holes in the mulch so they could find earthworms. She smiled when her and the boys chased the girls around with worms dangling from their thumbs and index fingers. “AHHHHH!” she’d hear them scream in shrill voices as they tried to hide their faces or run away. Daria didn’t really like the worms herself. They kind of gave her the heebie-jeebies; but she liked the reactions from her female classmates.

When it was lunch time, they were asked to stand in a single-file line and to grab a partner. They had to hold hands so that everyone was accounted for and no one got lost on their way to the cafeteria. She held hands with the boys sometimes and when they got to the lunch room she’d wipe her hands on her pants–trying to get the sweat from their palms off of her along with their germs. It wasn’t like that when she got to hold hands with a girl, though. She’d lace their fingers together and there would be an automatic smile on her face. She may have even blushed. It felt different, but she didn’t know at the time what it would all mean for her until she got older.

She remembered one specific time in kindergarten when one of her friends, Isabel, had been really quiet in class. Usually her and Daria got in trouble because they talked behind the teacher’s back. They always got caught even though they tried to whisper softly and read each other’s lips. Daria was getting good at it. Izzy (that’s what Daria called her and she was the only one that called her that), had missed school for a few days and everyone was wondering where she went, especially Daria… because that was her best friend. Their teacher said something about private family matters. When Izzy came back a few days later, she didn’t seem to be in a talkative mood. Daria even tried to tell her their favorite jokes but not even that would crack a smile.

Daria’s five-year-old self didn’t understand things like fathers dying. She guessed that’s what their teacher was talking about when she said Izzy needed some time with her family. Daria didn’t like seeing her so sad. Sometimes Izzy would start shedding tears in the middle of class and the teacher had to stop and pull her outside in the hallway, away from everyone. When they both came back, Izzy’s cheeks would be pink and she’d wipe the last of her tears from under her own eyes.

The next time it happened, Daria had noticed first. They were in their work books doing a color-by-number section and she heard sniffling coming from across the table. There were a few other kids sitting with them, but they didn’t pay her any attention. Daria didn’t know what to do or how to feel; all she knew was that she didn’t like seeing her best friend cry like that. So, Daria did the only thing that she thought would make her happy. She dug through her own crayon box and she pulled out a purple crayon. It was Izzy’s favorite color. “Here.. you can have mine.” Daria whispered and her little fingers handed it over to her. Now Izzy had two purple crayons and Daria saw how she began smiling through her tears–so she kept doing it. Whenever the teacher wasn’t looking, she’d steal purple crayons from her other classmates' crayon boxes until Izzy had enough to have her own box of twelve purple crayons.

She’d never forget the smile on Izzy’s face and how she scooted her chair to the same side as Daria so that they could color together. They both were inseparable since.

the road to sonya red strap.

Past

There was one thing on Sonya’s mind and one thing only: the Raw Women’s Championship. It had been stuck in her head ever since she made her presence known on New Years by making her return to the ring. Well… it wasn’t a return to the ring, per say, but she was back. When Vince called her and offered her to be an assistant manager to Adam Pearce, the gears started turning in her head already.

She never got to hold any type of championship when she was wrestling in the ring, not even the tag-team championships (don’t get her started on those). Since she wasn’t in a tag-team anymore, she had her eyes set on the most prestigious title that she could lay her hands on. She could have her pick of the Smackdown Women’s Championship, or the Raw Women’s Championship. Charlotte Flair was the current reigning champion of the blue brand, and Sonya wasn’t going to mess with her 13x title reign. Plus, she considered her a friend, maybe something more than that. So that left her to take her shot at the Raw championship.

Present

Sonya thought it would be so easy to get that red title. She was in a position of power and she was going to use that to her advantage. Her first match against Bianca didn’t go as planned. She had restarted the match a few times, in her favor, but still wasn’t able to get the job done. She even had two partners to help her and they let her down immensely. She could almost take the gold. It was right next to her and she couldn’t reach far enough to grab it.

Since then, she had teamed up with Becky Lynch and Rhea Ripley to face Bianca Belair, Asuka, and Liv Morgan, in order to try to figure out a new strategy that she could use against Bianca. If she could find a weakness in her skill set then she could use that to her advantage.

She wasn’t going to lie… even using her managerial powers, she still couldn’t get the job done. Just like she couldn’t get the job done when she played sidekick to Mandy Rose. Even she was flourishing as NXT Women’s Champion and at the height of her career. And what was Sonya doing? Using her upper management powers to fail at winning the championship. It was starting to take a toll on her, mentally. She was self-doubting herself and wondering if this was even the right career choice for her. If she couldn’t have a decent title run with the odds in her favor, then what was she good for?

She was in her office after Smackdown and she pulled off her suit jacket, contemplating the choices that she could make. She was thinking about stripping Bianca of the title so that she could take it for herself, but Adam was already having upper management looking into her history and seeing if she was being biased towards any of the competitors, including herself. Which she was… anyone could see that. But, she did everything by the book. They weren’t going to find any evidence against her for using her authority wrongly.

Sonya tossed her jacket onto the couch and she paced back and forth, her hands on her hips and her head tilted back so that she looked at the ceiling. Many ideas were running rampant through her mind, but one stuck out to her specifically. A sinister smirk formed across her lips, her brown eyes hardening.

She was going to win the Raw Women’s Championship. That was a promise.
