For the first time in what felt like forever, things were starting to look up for Mackenzie, so she’d decided that maybe it was time to upgrade her apartment for something a little bigger and nicer and maybe even closer to town. She’d been living on the outskirts of town ever since she’d arrived back in Hartsville almost eight months earlier and although her apartment was nice, it was a little too small for the red head’s liking, so after getting in touch with the real estate agent, she’d set up a meeting with Aubrey. She’d never actually met the woman before, but she had heard great things about her and was hoping that maybe she could help her find the house of her dreams; one that was a lot bigger than her current apartment and a home that she would be happy to grow old in!

After getting herself ready, she grabbed her purse to head out of her apartment so that she could go and meet the other woman; having arranged to meet her at one of the properties just outside of town. Wrapping her hand around the doorknob, she pulled it open though was greeted by her ex girlfriend, Avery. She wasn’t exactly sure what they were now - they weren’t together, but there were times that they didn’t exactly feel broken up either. Running her tongue along the inside of her mouth, she swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat and offered the blonde a small smile “Ave, what’s up?” Kenzie questioned, biting down on the corner of her mouth for a brief moment. “Stop that. You know I hate it when you do that.” Kenzie tried to play coy and act like she had no idea what Avery was talking about, but she knew it was the lip biting and that caused Kenzie to do it again, sucking her lower lip between her teeth as a small smirk tugged at her lips.

“You’re annoying,” Avery smirked, grabbing Kenzie’s arm and pulling her from the apartment. “But you’re ready, so let’s go. I have a surprise for you.” Kenzie knew that she should have declined or told the blonde that she was busy but this was Avery she was talking about. This was the girl that she was in love with and had been trying to win back ever since she’d arrived in town. “Okay, give me a second.” Avery nodded and let Kenzie’s arm go so the redhead could close and lock her door before quickly sending Aubrey a text to try and reschedule the appointment. She hoped that she wouldn’t mind and hated messing her around, but this was important - more important than finding her dream home, or at least as far as Kenzie was concerned. “Okay, I’m all yours. So where are we going?” she asked, shoving her phone into her pocket as she turned her attention to the other female and followed her down the stairs. “The Urban Garden. But I’m not telling you why. You’ll just have to wait and see.”

#PastDrabble

Another Saturday night meant another Party and Mackenzie was not about to turn down the opportunity to get completely trashed. It was her thing. Everyone around her knew that she enjoyed getting drunk and breaking her grandparent’s rules. If the redhead knew one thing, it was how they felt about partying and drinking in general. Alcohol was banned from the house - neither of them touched the stuff and they hadn’t since Mackenzie’s mother had been a teenager. They told her it was because of their own daughter’s out-of-control behavior, but what they failed to see was that Mackenzie was traveling down the same dark path that her mother once had. Shaking the thoughts from her head, she picked up her phone when she heard it vibrating against her bedside table. “I’m coming. They just fell asleep,” she quickly sent her friend before shoving her phone into the back pocket of her jeans and heading over to the window. She pushed it open before quickly climbing through it, her teeth sinking her into her lower lip gently as she made the quick run down her driveway and to the awaiting car.

After Kenzie had reached the car, she quickly pulled the door open and slipped her slender frame inside before slamming the door shut heavily. “Come on! Let’s go. What the hell are you waiting for?” she smirked, punching Derek in the arm in a bid to signal him to start driving. “Hey, Kenz! Want a drink?” Turning her attention to the female beside her, the redhead’s eyes widened and she shook her head. “Seriously, Ash?! You need to ask?!” a small smirk spread across her lips as she extended her hand and grabbed the bottle of tequila that the other girl was holding. She raised it to her lips and took a large mouthful before passing it around to the others in the car. “So, where the hell are we going?!” Partying and getting lit on a school night was not the best idea, but she didn’t care about school or much else if she was being completely honest. She was failing school and was already about to drop out - maybe she already would have had it not been for the therapist that she was seeing.

Arriving at a secluded park half an hour later, Mackenzie had already consumed half a bottle of tequila and was beyond tipsy, but she had no intentions of going home or call it a night. Smirking, the fifteen-year-old stumbled out of the car, the bottle in hand, and raised it to her lips to take a generous swig. “Okay, but that is some good sh*t!” she stated, holding out her hand to swipe the joint from her head. “You know you’re going to be grounded for life if you go home in this state, so why don’t you crash at mine tonight, baby,” Derek smirked as he moved up behind the female and draped his arm around her neck. Turning her head in his direction, Kenzie rolled her dark brown hues and shrugged him off as she brought the joint to her lips and inhaled slowly. Derek had been trying to get into her pants since he’d moved to Hartsville six months earlier and she had turned him down every single time. She already had her eyes on someone and Derek certainly wasn’t her type, though he also wasn’t one to take no for an answer - something she would learn a few hours later.

“I don’t care! I’m going out and there is nothing you can do to stop me!” Mackenzie screamed as she rounded the corner and walked down the hallway, though her grandmother was right behind her. “Mackenzie Gabriella Reign Winters! You are not stepping foot out that front door.” The redhead completely ignored her grandmother. Her grandfather had tried to say it was just a phase and to ignore the fifteen-year-old. She was just being rebellious like her mother had been at that age, but her grandmother knew better. She was spiraling out of control and had been ever since the death of her father. The day he’d died had broken her. Not completely, but just enough for her not to really care about anything anymore and especially not the ‘rules’ that her grandparents were attempting to inflict on Mackcnzie and her two sisters. “You’re not my mother. She left. She didn’t want me, remember?! So stop acting like you are!” Mackenzie’s words seemed to be enough to cause the older woman to stop dead in her tracks because once she was out of the house, she glanced over her shoulder and no one seemed to be following her.

As tears rolled down her cheeks, Mackenzie ran. She didn’t want to stop and she didn’t want to turn back, despite the two phone calls that she seemed to miss. She couldn’t breathe and she felt like she was having a panic attack, but she didn’t stop, not until she found herself running through the cemetery. Falling to her knees in front of her father’s gravestone, she buried her head in her hands and sobbed. She missed him. He hadn’t been the best father in the world, but he’d been her dad, and the day he died, she lost her mother too. She hadn’t even been there for the funeral and it broke her heart. “Daddy,” she whispered, wiping the tears from her eyes as her phone rang again. Slowly, the redhead pulled her ringing iPhone from her pocket and glanced down at the screen. Seeing her older sister’s name appear across the screen, she declined the call. She loved Violet, but she needed to be alone. She needed to talk to her father and talk to him about everything.

“I wish you were here,” she began, shaking her head as she wiped her eyes. “So do I, Mack.” Hearing a voice caused Mackenzie to almost jump out of her skin as she turned her attention to the older female. “What are you doing here, Vi?” Walking towards her younger sister, Violet crouched down on the ground beside Mackenzie and shrugged her shoulders as her gaze fell on their father’s gravestone. “You always come here when you’re upset. I know it helps you to talk to dad, so I wanted to make sure that you were okay.” Biting down on the inside of her mouth, Mackenzie shook her head as another tear fell down her cheek before she shifted closer to her older sister. “I hate her. I’m never going home, never.” Mackenzie hadn’t felt like she had a home since the day her mother walked out and often found herself rebelling against everything that her grandparents said. She loved them, but they weren’t her parents and she reminded them of that at every opportunity. “Listen, M. I’m scared that whey will send you away if you don’t just do as you’re told. I heard them. They were talking about sending you to that shrink and if you don’t go..I think they are talking about sending you to a school for girls.” The words that her sister spoke sent a shockwave through her entire body and without saying a single word, she screamed as loud as she possibly could.

bring the lights up, bust the doors down!

Ten Years Ago

TW; Grooming, sexual assault, and eating disorders.

Some secrets are meant to stay secret forever. That was how Mackenzie had been raised. She could still remember her grandmother’s comment when she’d come out to her as bisexual. She’d grown up in an extremely religious household, but it wasn’t the fact that Mackenzie was bisexual or that she had a girlfriend that bothered her grandmother, but what those around her would say. She was worried about what her friends would say. As far as she was concerned, Mackenzie could do what she pleased and sleep with whoever she pleased as long as it remained a secret. Secrets were the foundation for any strong family. That was how she’d been raised and that was a lesson that she would carry with her throughout her entire life. Maybe that was what made it easy for him. He was supposed to be a friend. He was the “only one who understood and accepted her”, or at least that was what he told her. With every touch and every glance, the fourteen-year-old became even more convinced that she was in love. “Age is just a number”, “no one will understand”, and “it has to be our little secret” were sentences she heard often, and she believed it.

“Here, you have to eat something.” Glancing up, Mackenzie offered a small smile and shook her head. “I already ate,” she mumbled as she gestured to the plate covered in crumbs that she’d placed on the bench. It was a trick she’d learned a few months ago, a trick that would fool all of those closest to her into thinking she had already eaten, so when they questioned her, they would be none the wiser. Truthfully, she had eaten anything but half a carrot, a couple of grapes, and a cookie that she immediately felt guilty for eating. He had told her that she was fat and needed to lose a few pounds. She would be beautiful if she dropped that last few pounds, so she’d attempted to do just that. Hearing her phone beep, she glanced down at the screen before looking over at her sister. “I have to go.” Kenzie pushed herself up from where she’d been sitting and bit down on the inside of her mouth as she slowly stood and offered her older sister a small wave before she turned on her heels to go and meet him.

It was that night, the day before she was set to turn 15 that he decided to take things all the way. She was a woman now and what he was doing was natural, it was love, so why did she feel sick to her stomach when he touched her? Why did she need to keep his secret? The tears that seemed to fall down her cheeks wouldn’t stop, but he told her it was because she was hungry and took her to get McDonald’s. Why was he feeding her when she was fat? Was it because he was rewarding her for being a good girl? His good girl? The thought sent a chill up her spine, but he was quick to put her mind at ease. “You can eat and still lose weight. That’s what these are for.” He held up two fingers and Kenzie knew exactly what he meant. She tried. The toilet bowl would be her new best friend, but she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t bring herself to throw up the contents of her stomach, or maybe she just wasn’t built for that. Sobbing, she ran from his home and didn’t stop until she got home, locking herself in her room for the rest of the weekend.

February 2019

New York was supposed to be a fresh start. Hartsville and the traumas that had left an unforgettable mark on Mackenzie were things of the past, or at least that was what the petite redhead told herself. If truth be told, it was what she needed to believe in order to survive. She jumped at her own shadow and wasn’t sure how she would survive it. The thought of Dr. Michael Ryan’s haunted her every waking moment and she knew that she needed to go back. She didn’t have a choice. He had killed her sister, maybe not literally, but he was the reason that she was dead and she was determined to make him pay. She needed to go back to South Carolina but she was terrified. She’d spent so long trying to run away from her demons, but she should have known that she wouldn’t have been able to keep running forever, despite how much she would have liked to. Hartsville was her home. Hartsville was where everything both good and bad in her life had happened. It was where Violet and Avery still were.

Laying in bed and staring at the ceiling, the redhead shook her head and closed her eyes tightly as she inhaled. There was no more putting it off. She heard her phone vibrate against the bedside table but decided to let it go to voice messages as she turned her attention to the guy laying in bed beside her. “Wake up,” she muttered. He didn’t move. Rolling her chocolate-colored hues, she shoved him gently. “You need to leave.” She hadn’t had a serious relationship since leaving Hartsville, unable to completely get over Avery. She wasn’t her first love, but she had been her one epic love. Their relationship had its ups and downs, but it was as if they were addicted to one another. They were drawn in and fireworks. Everything was about that blonde and even now she couldn’t quite let her go. No, this was all about the physical, and once Mackenzie was done with them, she kicked them out of her bed and out of her apartment. If men could do it, why couldn’t she? “Bitch.” She’d head that one before so it didn’t phase her. “Thank you.” A small smirk spread across her lips and she reached for her phone.

It was late, almost time for her to go to the club. She’d never imagined her life like this and when she returned back to Hartsville no one would know what she’d been forced to do in order to make ends meet. No one would know that she’d worked as a stripper, no one would ever know. Slipping from her bed, she grabbed her robe and slipped it on before making her way to the bathroom to have a quick shower. She’d never been one to get ready quickly, but it was amazing how fast she could do it if she was running late. As soon as she was ready and dressed for the club, she made her way out of her apartment, locked up, and headed for the car. Another phone call and again she ignored it. This time a text followed the missed call. Yanking out her phone, she rolled her eyes. Six missed calls. She guessed her sister had called again when she’d been in the shower. Opening the message, she almost dropped it as tears filled her eyelids. “He’s been arrested, M. You need to come home, please. We need you.” The tears began to roll down her cheeks. M&M was the combined name that she and Mercy were known as. “Don’t call me M,” she quickly replied before turning her phone off and getting into the uber. She wanted to forget. She needed to forget.

Steam Community :: :: Cheryl

Mackenzie stood there in complete silence as she watched her older sister. She wasn't sure that this was the right thing to do, but what choice did they have? She didn't want to go to prison, she wasn't built for that and there was no way she'd cope. Kenzie wasn't sure of her sister knew that and maybe that was why she'd decided to go to such lengths, or maybe it was just what you did when you had little sisters; hell, Kenzie knew that if it had been Mercy that she'd have done the same thing. Shaking her head, she took a deep breath and swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat as the flickering flames danced in her eyelids. "Vi, what if.." She was cut off when her sister looked up from the flames before them; flames that were destroying every last piece of evidence that the two girls had been involved. "No one will find out, Kenz. I promise."

The younger redhead was hesitant but she listened to her sister anyway. Maybe she just wanted to believe that they could get away with murder. It wasn't really murder, though, was it?! It had been an accident, but now a woman was dead. She couldn't help but think about this woman's family. Did she have children that would grow up without a mom? A tear ran down her cheek and she turned when she felt her sister's arms wrap around her. "Come on. Let's go home." Glancing over at her sister, Mackenzie nodded and glanced back at the flickering embers as they started to burn out. No one would know that they had been there, no one would know that Mackenzie had gone and gotten completely trashed before driving home from a party that she wasn't allowed to attend. Violet had made sure that all evidence had been destroyed and they would be able to move on with their lives, unlike their victim or her family.

"Okay," Mackenzie finally whispered, flicking the tear from underneath her eyelid as she turned on her heels and wrapped one arm around her sister's waist. "But can we go and get a burger. I really don't want to go home." This was a secret that would stay with them forever. There was no way they could tell their grandparents. They wouldn't understand and would be more concerned with punishing Mackenzie and Violet for sneaking out rather than the situation itself or the fact that someone was dead because of Mackenzie's actions. Violet didn't say a word though and simply nodded as the two of them walked through the forest and along the clearing, making their way to their friend's car. Daniel hadn't asked questions when Violet had asked him to bring them to the forest and neither of the two girls had divulged the reason. He didn't care and Mackenzie was thankful for that. "Thanks, Big D," Kenzie smile as she slipped into the back of the car and glanced over at her sister as she too got in. "And thanks Vi." Leaning over, she hugged her big sister as a few more tears escaped her eyes.

# 5 Grateful

Bella Thorne Writing GIF by Midnight Sun - Find & Share on GIPHY

A new year, a new me. Mackenzie was so used to making that promise or making some kind of new years resolution, but after the last few years, she’d decided that 2021 would be different. She wasn’t going to make some grand comment that this year would be better or different. She would leave that up to the gods, or to fate, whoever was responsible for the way that life turned out. Biting down on the inside of her mouth, the redhead leaned over and pulled open the drawer from the table beside her bed, pulling out her journal. Grabbing a pen from her bedside table, she opened the pink glitter cover and flicked through several pages that had already been written on until she landed on a blank page. She didn’t even know what she was going to write; she had so much going on in her head at that moment, but all she wanted to do was get out of her head and focus on everything going on around her. Shaking the thoughts from her head and taking a deep breath, an attempt to focus, she lowered the pen until the point was pressing into the paper.

Dear Diary,

2021, I can’t believe where this year has gone, or rather, last year I guess. So much has happened since I came back to town and there is a part of me that wishes I never had. I know that I should be grateful to be alive and to have my sister, and I am, but I can’t help but think about everything that has happened. I know losing Avery was my fault and I know Mercy’s death was my fault too, and I just can’t shake that feeling of guilt. But, at least with Avery, I have a chance to make things right and I will. I will never stop loving her, I never have and I guess I should be counting my lucky stars that she hasn’t moved on, at least not completely. I think she had something going on with her bandmate, I went to see her the other day and it felt like I had interrupted a heated argument or something, I’m really not sure, but the one thing I do know is that this thing between us isn’t over. I should never have left, but I did, and now all I can do is try and make it up to her. And I will.

Glancing down, she read her diary entry a couple of times before placing her pen back down on the bedside table and closing her journal, tossing it back into her open drawer before she closed it and grabbed her phone. Scrolling down until she found Avery’s number, she quickly flicked her ex-girlfriend a text. “Hey, I’m coming over and I’m bringing breakfast.” As soon as she’d sent the message, she threw her blankets back and slid from the bed, making her way into the bathroom to grab a quick shower. There was a part of her that knew she probably shouldn’t have even given the blonde warning, but they were past the avoiding stage, right? Avery didn’t seem to be avoiding her these days. Running her tongue along the inside of her mouth, she closed the bathroom door and turned the shower on, though as she waited for the water to heat up, she heard her sister’s voice. “Kenz, I’m going out. Lock up if you leave.” Mackenzie’s lips curved into a small smile and started to get undressed. Her sister was perhaps her biggest blessing and the reason that she was the most grateful. Her sister had been there through everything and had even given her a place to stay. “Thank you, Vi.”

#4.Forgiveness

Sad Bella Thorne GIF by Liam Payne - Find & Share on GIPHY

“You need to forgive yourself.” Mackenzie glanced over at the woman who stood over her. Janice was like family. She had been there for Mackenzie since birth; she was best friends with Kenzie’s grandmother, she was more or less family, so if anyone was going to get through to Mackenzie, it was going to be her. Maybe that was Violet had gone to her, knowing that no one else would be able to get through to her younger sister. Avery possibly could have, but she was Kenzie’s ex, so it didn’t feel right to go to her. No, Dr. Janice Stewart would have to do, but Forgiveness was easier to give other people than yourself. It was her fault that her sister had died. It was her fault that Mercedes would never get married or have children and Mackenzie had long accepted that and she was tired of people trying to convince her otherwise. “You don’t know what you’re talking about, Aunty Janice,” she mumbled, having been brought up to call friends of her grandparents either aunty or uncle, and Janice wasn’t an exception.

Turning her head away from the woman who had known Mackenzie her entire life, the redhead shook her head and wrapped her arms around her legs as she tugged them into her body. “You don’t know what happened. You only know what Vi told you and she is wrong.” A sob left her lips. She didn’t want to be here, talking about any of this. There was nothing that Janice, her sister, or anyone else could say that would relieve her guilt over her younger sister’s death. Mercy’s suicide had broken Mackenzie in a way that she’d never thought was possible. She should have been there for her, taken her away from Hartsville when she’d fled, worried for her own safety, but instead, she’d run off and hadn’t looked back. Mercedes hadn’t been the only person that Mackenzie had left behind though, but she had been Mackenzie’s biggest regret.

“Mackenzie!” Hearing her name caused her to jolt and glance over at the woman, biting down on the corner of her mouth as she furiously wiped the tears that had been cascading down her cheek. “Where’d you go, hun?” Janice could tell from the look on the younger female’s face that she was confused by her comment. “I was talking to you, I said your name about six times, so where’d you go?” For a moment, Mackenzie’s mind flashed back to her younger sister and the last time that she had seen her before she was drawn back to the present. “It doesn’t matter,” Mackenzie finally whispered as she pushed herself up from her bed and grabbed her jumper from the corner of her room. The room suddenly felt chilly and she doubted that all of the jumpers in the world could make her warm. “Monday morning. You and me at my office. No excuses.” Mackenzie turned to look at Jancie and gave a small nod. She trusted her more than anyone else in the world, even more than her grandparents, so maybe talking to Janice, a professional would do her some good.

Connection Ideas/Plot Bunnies

PLOTS: These are various plot bunnies or storyline ideas. They can all be altered to fit the characters and are just basic. I would like to discuss or flesh them out more with the other writer.

Half-Siblings: Mackenzie and Muse B share the same father. Mackenzie's father spent years cheating on her mother with Muse B's mother and had numerous affairs. Both Mac and Muse B had grown up knowing one another but they had no idea that they were siblings, not until they found out that their father had died and both of them were attending his funeral.

Childhood Bestfriends: Muse B and Mackenzie have known one another since they were little. They grew up together and saw one another as sisters; the two were extremely close, but even Muse B wasn't enough to get Mackenzie back on the straight and narrow. When Kenzie was seventeen and out of control, she betrayed Muse B [how can be discussed] and their friendship broke down. After Mackenzie disappeared from Hartsville, Muse B tried contacting her but she never picked up the call.

Ex-Girlfriend: Kenzie and Muse B were together for a couple of years until Kenzie packed up and left. Kenzie had been going through a really hard time and Muse B had helped her through it, they had helped one another, but Muse B's help wasn't enough. Things between them slowly began to deteriorate until one night, Kenzie disappeared without saying goodbye. No one even knew if she was still alive, she just vanished without a trace.  Several months on and Luna is finally back in town

Obsessed: Muse B was a huge part of Mackenzie's life when she was a teenager. This person introduced Kenz to the partying lifestyle and was a constant in her life. She wasn't the best influence on her, but Kenz was convinced that she needed Muse B more than she needed anyone else. She would get jealous when Muse B was in a relationship and would always try to come in between the relationship, sometimes going as far as seducing Muse B's significant other, even if she herself was in a relationship. Her motives were not driven by any sort of sexual or romantic desire for Muse B, but she believed that Muse B was the only person that she had and she didn't want to lose that.

Possible Connections: These are just basic connections I would love and storylines can be discussed and developed based on them
