Drabble Marathon: Three

Bella Thorne shared by Merve Çiçek on We Heart It

“We’re going to get through this. Together.” It was a simple sentence and had a simple meaning, but to Mackenzie, it was anything but simple. “I can’t do this right now, I have to go.”  The redhead turned on her heels and slowly started to walk back through the graveyard and towards the awaiting car. “Kenzie!” She turned when she felt her older sister grab her arm. She didn’t want to fight; this wasn’t the right time or the right place, but she also didn’t want to talk to McKayla either. They had just buried their younger sister, Makenna, and the last thing Mackenzie wanted to do was put on a brave face and pretend like everything was okay, when that couldn’t have been further from the truth. “Kayla, I have to go. I will call you when I get back to New York.” It was a lie and she knew the older female would know that too. Mackenzie had promised to call her sister at least ten times in the last six months but hadn’t called her sister once and now the guilt was eating away at her.

Taking a deep breath, the redhead did all she could to avoid eye contact with the older female. She looked so much like their younger sister and that pain rippled through the petite female. It was much worse than she’d ever imagined and Mackenzie was doing all she could to avoid any acknowledgment of it. Biting down on the corner of her mouth, the redhead slowly looked up, letting her eyes meet her sister’s for only a moment. “M.C..” she paused, a tear escaping her right eye and cascading down her cheek before she quickly flicked it away with her finger. “I can’t do this right now, okay?! Just let me go. I’ll call you once I’m home.” As far as Mackenzie was concerned, none of this was up for discussion or debate. She’d made up her mind and had no intentions of discussing it with her sister any further. Pulling her arm from McKayla’s grip, the younger female turned away and headed over to the car. Once she’d opened the door, she slipped inside and closed the door so that she could head to the airport and catch her flight back home.

As the car drove away, Mackenzie couldn’t bring herself to wave goodbye to her sister or to take one final glance at Makenna’s final resting place. She was riddled with guilt and blamed herself for her sister’s death. If only she hadn’t left Hartsville and left her sister to deal with Dr. MIchael Ryans on her own, if only she’d been there every single step of the way to help her sister and get her out of the situation she’d been trapped in, but she hadn’t and now that was something that Mackenzie had to live with every single day. Pulling out her phone, Mackenzie searched for her sister’s name and quickly began to type a message. She didn’t want their relationship to be like this. When they’d been younger, Mackenzie had been her best friend and she missed it; she missed her. Biting down on the inside of her lower lip gently, Mackenzie quickly began to type her sister a message. “I’m sorry. I promise I will call you once I’m home. I love you and miss you, Mack. x” After sending the message, she shoved her phone into her pocket and glanced out the window, getting completely lost in her own thoughts.

"Mommy," Mackenzie whispered, tears falling down her face as she watched her mother get into the car and drive away. She should have been used to her mother leaving by now, she'd seen it more times than she could count, but every time her mother walked back into her life, she got her hopes up only to have them dashed once again. It was a vicious circle and one that the seven-year-old girl would never fully get over. She'd watch as her friends were picked up from school by their mothers and fathers or taken to sports on a Saturday by one or both of their parents, but Mackenzie had never experienced that and never would. She'd only been one when Magnolia Winters had walked out on her and her older sister McKayla, who was only two at the time, and it had been like she'd dropped off the face on the earth. She had gone months without contact to either of the girls and the two phone calls that she had made, had only been to ask her own mother for some money. If it hadn't been for their grandmother's insistence that she talked to her daughters, they wouldn't have heard from her at all.

"Come along, dinner is ready. We don't want to keep your grandfather waiting" Mackenzie wiped the tears as they continued to cascade down her cheek and glanced up at her grandmother. She was the closest thing that she and her sister had to a parent, and although she loved her, she wasn't the parent that she wanted. She wanted her mother and didn't understand why her mother didn't want her too. Nodding, Mackenzie slowly turned and made her way inside but she wasn't hungry and didn't want to pretend otherwise. "May I be excused?" No words needed to be said and no answer needed to be given. Mackenzie could tell from the look on her grandmother's face that she had no choice but to eat. "Thing of the boys and girls who are not lucky enough to have food on their table. The Lord has blessed us with this food and you will eat every single bite. Do I make myself clear, young lady?" Mackenzie simply nodded as she took a seat at the table, sitting directly across from her grandfather. "Chin up, princess. You can have some ice cream after dinner."

Following a prayer and dinner, Mackenzie excused herself from the dinner table, claiming to be feeling unwell, and made her way to her bedroom. She wasn't questioned. What seven-year-old would pass up the chance of ice cream before bed? None, or at least that was the conclusion her grandparents had come to, so they believed her and simply told her they would be in to tuck her in and say the Lord's prayer with her once she was ready and they did. The moment she called for them, they said a prayer and bid her goodnight, but she couldn't sleep. All Mackenzie could think about was her mother and how unwanted she felt by her. After pulling up the bedding, she snuggled beneath the covers and attempted to fall asleep until she heard the door to her bedroom slowly open. Biting down on the corner of her mouth, the redhead slowly sat up to see who had entered her room. Seeing her older sister. Mackenzie shifted over, allowing Mckayla to jump into bed with her. They had taken to sneaking into one another's room for the past week and Mackenzie felt grateful for it. McKayla made her feel safe and loved.

Rolling over, Mackenzie watched as her older sister climbed into the bed. "Are you okay, Kenz?" McKayla questioned. Truth was, she really wasn't sure, but she was trying to put on a brave face and pretend otherwise but McKayla could read Mackenzie like a book. "No matter what happens, it's you and me, okay?" McKayla added with a small whisper as she moved a little closer to her younger sister and wrapped her arms around the younger female. "I love you, Kay Kay," Mackenzie whispered as she moved a little closer and snuggled into her sister, wrapping her arms around the other girl in a tight embrace. Being with her sister was the only place that Mackenzie truly felt safe.

Drabble Marathon: One

50 gh bella thorne GIF - Find on GIFER

Leaving town had been one of the hardest things Mackenzie had ever had to do, but it had been something that she’d needed to do. She’d needed to get out and get away from the people that had made her life unbearable over recent times, but that also meant leaving her best friend, her girlfriend, and her sisters. It had been a hard but a necessary decision, or at least that was how Mackenzie had tried to justify it to herself. It was how she’d tried to make sense of her decisions, but since then, she’d come to regret it. Leaving had caused so many people so much pain but most importantly, it had caused Avery so much pain. The blonde was a pain in the ass half of the time, but she was also the red head’s favorite person, and knowing that she’d hurt someone she cared so much about, broke her own heart.

“You're mine, forever. Doesn't matter what anyone says” Mackenzie finally said, breaking the long silence that had filled the space between them for several uncomfortable minutes. “I don’t care who you’re with or who I’m with because you and me? We’re endgame, Ave. We’re destiny.” The redhead had never been a believer in fate or destiny, but in that moment, she knew that Avery was her one true love and she was meant to end up with her, though given all that had happened between the two of them, she wasn’t quite sure when that would happen, but she knew it would. “Don’t say that,” the blonde finally interrupted, causing Mackenzie to fall silent. “You can’t say that. You left. You broke any chance of there ever being a me and you again, Kenz. Just go.” Mackenzie watched as Avery turned away from her, but before she could completely face away, the redhead reached out and grabbed her arm, stopping her ex-girlfriend mid-turn. “Ave..” The blonde shook her head defiantly but Mackenzie turned the blonde back around; their eyes locking for the first time since Mackenzie had arrived on Avery’s doorstep thirty minutes beforehand.

She could feel her heart racing within her chest and the butterflies invaded her stomach as the redhead pulled the blonde close, their bodies pressed together as Mackenzie placed a firm kiss against the blonde’s lips. She had no right to put any of this on Avery; she was the one who had left, but it had been a mistake and from the moment Mackenzie had arrived back in town she’d been trying to make things right and had been trying to make it up to Avery. “It’s you and..” Mackenzie began, but before she could finish her train of thought, the blonde had pushed Mackenzie back, breaking their kiss as she created a bigger gap between the two of them. “Kenz, please go,” she whispered, tears stinging her light blue orbs. Mackenzie wanted to wrap her arms around Avery and protect her from the world, but what could she say? What could she do? If anything, Avery needed protection from Mackenzie and the redhead knew it. “I’m sorry,” Kenzie whispered, turning on her heels as she slowly walked to the door, but before she walked out, she turned to glance at her ex-girlfriend. “I’m not giving up on you. Not now, not ever.”
