Lost and alone...
Lost and Alone... By: Tasha Yar Lost and alone, something Natasha Yar was quite used to. From a young age, she had been both of these things, and even now, away from Turkana IV, safe on Earth she was still alone. On Turkana IV life was a living hell but it was a life Tasha had come to learn to deal with, how to roll with the punches, the ups, and the downs but now here on Earth things were so different. She wasn't like the others her age, she wasn't like anyone around her.
Though she was intelligent Tasha was having a difficult time with everything from academics to basic forms of socializing. None of the others around her had ever had to deal with the horrors she had at such a young age and now at Starfleet Academy, among her fellow students, she was an outcast. She heard the whispers behind her back, the sympathetic looks from adults around her. She was known as some wild child brought from a barbaric planet. Though no one dared bully her for this the whispers and pitty were more than enough to get under her skin.
Despite being an outcast she had befriended one student, a Klingon named Worf. Like Tasha, he too was looked on with pity and little understanding. He too was in a place he belonged and yet didn't. The two had bonded over this isolation but also they were similar in their pasts. Both orphaned at a young age, both having a traumatic childhood, though Worf's was to a far less degree it still bonded the two.
More than often Tasha would be in Worf's dorm room, Worf had no roommate and Tasha avoided her dorm room and roommate at all costs. On this night she sat studying with Worf, she sat staring at the book on her lap, it still being hard for her to grasp basic things like reading. Looking up for a moment she could feel the tears filling in her eyes, first, she felt sadness for being so... uneducated, and then she felt anger.
Flinging her book across the room it hit Worf who was sitting opposite from her. Growling a little in irritation he looked at her. "What is the problem?!" He asked in his gruff tone. She frowned "I can't do this! How am I supposed to train to be a Starfleet officer if I can barely read!" She snapped angrily, tears streaming down her face. Rolling his eyes Worf attempted to hand her the book back. "You can do this." He said, Tasha, frowned still feeling she couldn't. "And if I refuse?" She asked defiantly, Worf, and her sharing a glare before he yanked the book back.
"Then I will read it to you... and help you learn every word you do not understand." Hesitantly Tasha crawled across the floor and took the book from Worf. She began to read from the text aloud and whenever she reached a word she could not say or understand he helped her. Tasha was an outcast. An abused child filled with fear and rage, But she was also strong and with the help of one friend slowly she became less of what she was and more of what she could be. Little did she or Worf know they'd one day both be Starfleet officers, well-respected ones at that. They wouldn't be outcasts forever.
