Never to be Outshone

A television screen flickered off, transforming the image of the back of a man entering a plane to blackness. The blond man set down the remote and raised one hand to wave at the screen as he shook his head thinking to himself. ‘Buh-Bye.’

He had no regrets, he couldn’t. Wouldn’t even think of it. After all, everything ends eventually. No matter how hard a person tries to think of some way this one thing that makes them happy could last, even that thing would end.

He honestly hadn’t set out to end things so early. He knew he was to blame. The discovery wasn’t intentional but that changed nothing. It had happened. He didn’t remember thinking about it. It was a mistake that happened that ended everything. Born out of his carelessness. In response there was only one thing that he could do.

He could remember that night like so many other nights. The perfect show. The lights shone down upon him. He could feel the love of the fans washing over him. Like every time he basked in it. It always gave him such a high and all he wanted to do was keep it going.

Back in the hotel, in his own room,  as he had so many times before he waited for Sora to come to him. He took a hit from his joint and downed a beer or two, maybe more. Then the soft knock on the door came. It was normal for them to meet up after, talk about the show, and discuss the next one. At least everyone else on the staff thought that’s what was happening. When he pulled open the door and Sora entered, that was where things went off track. Careless in closing the door, he hadn’t made sure the door had latched.

Selfishly he’d embraced him, his lips claiming those he craved only for Sora to overpower him. Only because he let him. Sora couldn’t do anything without him. All the passion they’d held back for one another on stage, what he liked to call the big tease spilled out in those moments. Sora had  pressed him against the wall just to the left of the bathroom door. It was the perfect spot to be discovered. Had he planned it he couldn’t have choreographed it better.

Before things could progress much further Sora had stopped kissing him as a gasp sounded from the door. Being the sober one Sora noticed first. Of course he was always more observant. More careful, taking care of Hoshi. As he noticed his eyes shot to the door then down at Sora then back to the door then pushed him away. Sora’s back had slammed against the wall. It must have been pretty hard from the look of him but no apology would come, no more apologies. Hoshi had only spared a moment to look at him before turning away from him forever.

No more apologies. He was Ueno and they simply didn’t. They did what they had to do, whatever they wanted to do and anyone around them could be used up and discarded without a thought. He couldn’t disgrace the family. If Sora didn’t know this fact then it was his own fault. If he was hurt, that was not on Hoshi. He could do no wrong. So he didn’t even think before the words passed his lips and he couldn’t take them back.

Not that he would if he could. It was the only way. Shift the blame to Sora and so he wouldn’t look bad. Never disgrace the family.

With fear in his eyes he stumbled to the door. It was the only way. He had to. Admit nothing. He’d been attacked, abused even for the whole time they’d been working together. He really laid it on think, attacked, abused, raped him repeatedly. Whatever made it sound like the biggest hardship for Hoshi. That was what people had to think and of course people would believe him because he was a Ueno. Ueano’s were always good upstanding citizens, morally superior, handsome or beautiful, everyone wanted to be with Hoshi but he was picky and above all things most certainly not gay.

He couldn’t waste time feeling bad. Really it wasn’t his fault that people believed him over Sora. Yes he had money on his side but any fool could see that in a fight he could take the tiny guitarist any day. He’d always thought the public in general was dumb. The media would print anything for large sums of money and people would believe him. It baffled him how many lives had been ruined this way. It was so easy. Tell a sensational story whilst throwing money at the media and they’d print his lies. His career would go on, his life was perfect, mostly.

The casualty was his lover, well, ex-lover. His life and career was over, at least for a good long while. Which was probably best for Hoshi anyway. Remove temptation so Hoshi could be a good son and wouldn’t engage in deviant behavior. Well, not that behavior.

Sora would surely hate him now. That was best too. He always knew someday he would because the good person that the guitarist saw inside him was just a dream. He wasn’t that man. He couldn’t be and he never had been. The beauty part was he hadn’t even fought. He’d slipped back into his own hotel room and disappeared into the night after that. After signing a few documents sent to him by the attorneys they were to this point.

Hoshi had been spirited away to his family’s vacation home. Next for him was starting his solo career and marriage. His family would find him a suitable wife and he would get married and have kids to dispel any thoughts that he wasn’t being honest. Sora would disappear from his life and he'd never rise above Hoshi to outshine him.

It was just as it should be. After all the sky existed so the stars can shine. The sky can never shine like a star.
