Rosary Beads
Rosary Beads Why hasn't God Made you better yet? "See... here.. and just here... and the rosary beads become like a bracelet you can wear." Lorraine said, showing her granddaughter Katie how to wear her set of rosary beads around her wrist like she often did. "Thanks grandma!" Katie said with a smile before starting to unravel the beads from around her small wrist. Lorraine gently stopped her and smiled. "How about you keep those sweetheart? They belonged to my grandmother... she gave them to me and now it's my turn to give them to you." She explained.
Katie nodded and smiled admiring the beads before her eyes set on the cross. She looked at it for a few moments before looking to Lorraine. "Why hasn't God made you better yet?" She asked innocently. Lorraine gave a tired smile and patted the spot beside her in bed, Katie moved to curl against her grandmother. "If God wants me to get better I will. If he doesn't.. then I won't." She said calmly.
Katie nodded and frowned a little ".. I've been praying. But he doesn't answer me and you're still sick." She said almost pouting. Lorraine laughed a little "well God isn't like a genie. You can't make a request and he just does what you ask." She explained and gently patted Katie's arm. "God has many more urgent things to worry about than me. But I'm sure he's heard your prayers and will take them into consideration hm?" Katie nodded and smiled again. "If he hasn't heard me I'll just get louder with my prayers." She said playfully.
Both she and Lorraine laughed until Ed interrupted them. "Hey! What's going on in here?" He asked, a smile on his face. Katie smiled "look grandma showed me how to wear my rosary beads!" She said excitedly showing her grandfather. He nodded and smiled "very pretty. Your Mom and Dad are downstairs with dinner." He said and gently lifted her from the bed, kissing her cheek before watching Katie rush downstairs.
Ed then turned his attention to Lorraine who lay in bed looking frail, not just due to her age but illness as well. "Hon.. why don't you let me bring your food up to you? We can eat in here." He said and frowned as Lorraine began getting out of bed, he moved to help her stand, helping her put on her robe as well. "Ed... I don't want to be stuck up here forever." She said looking to him.
He gave a helpless look back and wasn't sure if she meant physically or if she was just too tired of being sick and wanted to leave. "I want to go down to dinner with our family.. and enjoy." She said and smiled at him, he gave a small one back before Lorraine spoke again. "Plus I want my Chinese food." She said walking toward the door.
"You aren't supposed to have it, the doctor said your blood pressure." Ed warned, Lorraine only scoffed and looked to Ed. "Look how old we are... what's it gonna do to me that already isn't wrong?" She asked, Ed nodded and sighed smiling. "Was I this bad a patient after my heart attack?" He asked. Lorraine nodded and smirked slightly "Worse. This is just payback."
Together Ed and Lorraine went downstairs, Lorraine greeted Judy and Anthony and just as she intended spent the rest of the evening with her family, eating, laughing, and loving. Lorraine knew she wasn't well and knew sometime soon her time would come. Sitting there with the family watching her granddaughter she knew no matter what she wouldn't leave, not entirely, not until Katie was ready. Just as her own grandmother had done for her many many years ago. "If God wants me to get better I will. If he doesn't... I won't."
