How Did You Know?

How Did You Know?

WRITTEN BY - LORRAINE WARREN//153397

Sitting in the back of her father's car Lorraine was very much at ease. She was curled up on the back seat, her head resting on her grandmother's lap. The sound of the music on the radio, the light tapping of rain hitting the car, and the gentle motion of the vehicle itself combined with the soft touch of her grandmother running her fingers through her hair was more than enough to lull the young girl to sleep.

However, Lorraine was awoken when her grandmother began to shake her. "Lorraine.. Lorraine darling sit up... wake up." Lorraine sleepily groaned and rubbed her eyes though did as she was told. It took her a few moments to fully wake before she looked to her grandmother. "What's wrong-" before she could ask her question her grandmother spoke.

"Lorraine tell your father not to go when the traffic light turns green." Lorraine looked confused for a minute and frowned as her grandmother spoke more urgently now, in a much sterner tone. "Lorraine Moran you listen to me and tell him not to go, now!"

Lorraine turned her attention to her father and the situation they were in. The car was waiting at a traffic light, and in front of them was another car. All in a matter of seconds the light turned green. "Daddy don't go!" Lorraine cried out, distracting her father for a moment. At that moment the car in front of them pulled off and that was when it happened. There was a loud crash, a car accident. If Lorraine's father had gone it would have been their car.

Lorraine sat frozen with fear and shock, her father rushed out of the car to see what could be been done and if anyone was hurt. Lorraine could already sense something, possibly someone from the crash who hadn't made it. Tearing up she curled against her grandmother, the feeling instantly going away as she seemed protected by any outside influence. She now sat in her grandmother's arms, still the sound of the radio playing, the tapping of the rain but soon there were sounds of sirens, an ambulance and police approaching. It was all quite the ordeal.

Later that evening once Lorraine and her father were home Robert decided he'd be the one to put Lorraine to bed. Tucking her in he sat on the edge of his daughter's bed and looked at her. "... Lorraine? How did you know? How did you know I shouldn't go?" He asked though with his seeming hesitation it seemed he already knew the answer to that.

Looking up at her father she frowned a little "grandma told me. She woke me up and she told me to tell you not to go. She yelled at me." She said almost pouting at that. Robert seemed unsure though only nodded and kissed her head. He was well aware his wife's mother had been dead for years now but he knew better than to point that out to Lorraine. "Goodnight pumpkin. Get some sleep." He said before standing and leaving the room. A very exhausted little Lorraine had no time to think over the night's events. It only took minutes before she was sound asleep.

I can't stop shaking

Palmeri Funeral Home

The morgue was filled with the sound of a large body thudding to the floor, the sounds of both Ed and Lorraine breathing heavily from the shock and adrenaline over what had just happened. Slowly looking down at the body Lorraine grimaced before speaking. "Ed.. she knows who we are... she saw who I was." She said in only a whisper though her panic was quite clear, at least it was to Ed.

"Lorraine, how can that be?" He asked still confused about how a psychic connection could work both ways. Frowning Lorraine shook her head "I don't know. It was like... she has the gift of sight too. Except.. she does not use hers for good." She said very confident in that. Lorraine had come across others who claimed to have abilities, she never doubted anyone of course but she had never connected with another like that. It felt so wrong it made Lorraine sick to her stomach.

"I didn't like that Ed. It was like we were sharing one mind. I could see through her eyes, she could see through mine." Tearing up though trying to keep her composure Lorraine shook her head again. "I never want that to happen again. I don't want to connect with someone that way.." she mumbled softly.

Sighing Ed nodded and though he couldn't fully understand how awful it must have been for Lorraine he knew it must have been terrifying and he could understand not wanting to feel that kind of feeling again. Taking one more moment he wrapped his arms around Lorraine and kissed her head, trying his best to comfort her.

"I can't stop shaking.." Lorraine admitted and it was true, her entire body still trembled and shook with fear. Again Ed nodded and gently tugged Lorraine along. "Come on hon.. let's go. We can call the funeral home tomorrow. Explain we broke the window and that we'll pay for it. You'll feel better once you're out of here." He promised.

Lorraine allowed Ed to pull her along though she quickened her pace when she began to hear disembodied whispers. These she knew weren't exactly evil but she did not want to stay in this place a moment longer surrounded by nothing but death.

"Did you touch my shoulder?" - Written for ᴡᴀʀʀᴇɴ ᴘʀᴏᴅɪɢʏ

Did you touch my shoulder?

Outside the Warren home the booming sound of thunder could be heard, the steady sound of the rain beating against the window. And there was an occasional flash of light from the lightening outside. It had been storming like this for hours now, and only hours ago the power had been lost prompting Judy to ask Lorraine to spend the night in her bedroom. Judy was nervous and somewhat anxious on normal nights when there was no storm and she had the dim light from her nightlight. But now here in the dark, she wanted her mother close.

Lorraine had of course agreed and once she had been sure Judy had fallen asleep she left her bedside and moved to the window seat where she planned to spend the night since Judy's bed was far too small for them both. Lorraine had been busily reading her Bible not ready to sleep just yet when the power came back on, Judy's room now flooded with light.

Judy woke and sat up. Lorraine had assumed the light coming back on had been what had woken her up. Closing her Bible she looked up and smiled "I'll turn the lights off sweetheart." She said. Judy though seemed unsure, she shook her head and frowned. "Mom? Did you touch my shoulder?" She asked.

What had woken Judy was someone shaking her shoulder, as though someone was trying to shake her awake. It just so happened that it coincided with the lights turning back on. Frowning a little Lorraine stood up and moved closer. "No Judy. I didn't touch you.. why?" She asked.

Judy cringed at the idea that something other than her mother had touched her. She looked around the room and saw nothing, nothing to indicate a spirit was there though still she felt as though they weren't alone. Lorraine turned off the lights in Judy's bedroom though made sure her nightlight was on. Looking toward Lorraine Judy frowned ".. mom I know the power is back on but please don't leave yet?"

Nodding Lorraine set her Bible down and moved to sit beside Judy again, gently laying her down. "I won't.. I promise. Just sleep." She said softly. Lorraine too could sense the uneasy feeling in the room and she'd stay there all night with Judy if she needed to. As Lorraine sat there she could have sworn she felt something touching her ankles but she paid it no mind and kept her focus on Judy.
