Pretending "Come on baby, let’s get you back to bed." Liz said her young daughter in her arms. Setting her down she watched as Ellie rushed over to her bed and scurried across it and beneath the covers. Smiling slightly Liz walked over and leaned down gently tucking her in before taking a seat beside her. "Now.. you be a good girl and go to bed. You’ve got school in the morning." Liz leaned down to kiss Ellie goodnight but stopped when Ellie spoke.
"You and Pop Pop were mad at each other. That’s why the glass broke, right?" She asked. Liz stared down at her daughter for a moment before nodding hesitantly. "We were having a heated conversation. Before you were born I left home and I didn’t give your Pop Pop a very good reason as to why." She said quietly.
"Why did you leave home?" Ellie asked. Again Liz was hesitant. She wanted to shelter her daughter from everything but then again that’s what her father had done with her and look how well that turned out. "Something bad happened to me. One day I’ll tell you more about it. But I was scared and I left home. And your Pop Pop and Nana were very sad that I was gone."
"I’d be sad too if you left and didn’t tell me why." Ellie said. Smiling now Liz shook her head. "Baby that won’t ever happen. With Pop Pop and Nana, we always had secrets between us. I couldn’t tell them everything. I had to pretend things were okay. You and me, we never have to pretend with each other. Whenever something happens you can come to me. Okay?" Ellie nodded now smiling.
"Goodnight Momma." Ellie said and leaned up for a hug. Happily Liz returned the hug, holding onto Ellie for a few minutes before kissing her cheeks. "Now get to sleep. I promise, Pop Pop and I will keep it down." Liz said as she stood and left the room, shutting the light out as she did.
Liz loved both her parents, she did. But she wanted a better relationship with her daughter, she wanted to be there for her more than her own parents had been for her. She wanted to be approachable, she wanted Ellie to feel safe enough to tell her things. Maybe if she had all those years ago, Liz would have never left home. Character’s full name.
