Marriage Written by: Maternal Soul // 1990134 Adam and Barbara had known each other since they were twelve years old. They had met when Barbara and her grandmother had moved to Winter River. And had been inseparable ever since. At first, it had just been a sweet friendship, at least on Barbara's part. But Adam had fallen in love with the young curly-haired beauty when he saw her. Adam was a little awkward, some might consider him nerdy. But Barbara was very much the same and they found comfort and happiness in each other. Throughout their teen years, they had been through so much together; now, at age eighteen, they were getting married.
Adam's parents didn't particularly approve, mainly because Adam and Barbara were so young. Barbara's grandmother just wanted to see Barbara happy and she knew, she could see, that Adam made Barbara happy. And it was true. Barbara had come to love Adam more than anyone. She wanted to be with him forever but she was scared. She hadn't lived a picture-perfect life like Adam had. Her family was dysfunctional and unusual. Other than her grandmother, everyone had always let her down. She knew Adam wasn't this way but still.. she feared the future.
Adam stood at the altar waiting for Barbara, his parents and siblings sat on the groom's side and Barbara's grandmother and a few friends sat on the bride's side. Five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes! Adam could hear his parents muttering that this was a disaster, and Barbara's grandmother looked concerned but what could she do?
Taking action Adam excused himself and went in search of Barbara. He couldn't help but laugh a little as he found her trying to squeeze out the window of the ladies' room, her poofy white dress getting in the way, she was wearing her sneakers!? After his brief laugh, Adam hurried over, gripping her waist and helping her back down.
"Barb honey.. what are you trying to do?" He asked. Looking to Adam for a few moments Barbara burst into tears. "I can't do this Adam! We can't get married! I.. am so nervous it feels like my heart is going to beat out of my chest! And I'm sweating.. I know your parents already don't like me... they're going to be so mad.. you're going to be mad! Adam I love you.. but I just.. I'm not-"
Before Barbara could finish Adam had gently placed his hand over her mouth. "... Honey.. do I look mad?" He asked giving that reassuring smile. "Do you still want to marry me... eventually?" His hand was still over Barbara's mouth so she simply nodded yes. It was true. She loved Adam, and she did want them to get married on day. But now she was too nervous, she wasn't ready. Plus, they had the rest of their lives!
"We will get married whenever you want to. For now, we'll just be engaged. I promise I am not mad. Mom and Dad... they'll get over it." He said and smiled as Barbara kissed him. "I love you, Adam." She said, smiling as he returned the kiss. "And I love now.. Mom and Dad will get over it but for now, let's avoid them. But we'll sneak out the back. I don't think I can fit through the window." He teased, giving her backside a playful swat. Laughing, smiling, hand in hand Adam and Barbara quietly left the church. It wouldn't be for a few more years until they returned and were finally married.
