Wish You Were . . .

Raspberries . . .  Robin Buckley thought to herself as she inhaled the wafting berry laced aroma as Tammy Thompson walked by her desk at the back of Mrs. Click's class singing Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Robin would come in early, strategically placing herself at the back of the class so that she could steal discrete glances at the focus of her puppy's love. She always smelled of raspberries. It was a sent that filled Robin with whimsey and longing. Tammy Thompson was Robin's first actual crush and Robin didn't know what to do about it. It was obvious that Tammy didn't and wouldn't feel in even a remote similar fashion. Tammy was just too... straight.

Robin chose her seat at the back of the class, knowing full well that Tammy would usually sit somewhere towards the middle so she could hopefully sit next to Steve Harrington. Robin hated Harrington. Steve was high school royalty and had caught the eye of their fellow classmate Tammy. What did Tammy see in him? He was a complete dingus. He was almost always late. He asked stupid questions. He wasn't even that good looking, at least not to Robin. The seed of jealousy rooted itself deep within her. She wanted Tammy to look at her the way she looked at Steve. If only she would all be right in the world.

A daydream drifted through Robin's thoughts, dancing it's way around her usual rational way of thinking. She imagined herself in place of the one that had caught her internalized ire. Tammy, looking dreamy, and moon-eyed at herself instead of Harrington. She fantasized about their gaze locking upon one anther, their sapphire hues staring back at one another with a longing that was reserved only for each other. Their hands clasping each other, fingers locking together like a puzzle as they drew themselves closer. Robin, nervously biting her lip before Tammy's own would push against hers. A wave of euphoria brushed over Robin fulfilling her adolescents desires.

I bet Tammy's lips taste just like raspberries, Robin thought to herself before she fell back into reality. Mrs. Click was already scolding the late Harrington. Class had already begun? Oh no. These stupid feelings were getting to be much for Robin as they were affecting her greater than she wished. She glanced over at Tammy, who was as usual, staring at that stupid Steve.

Robin's blood boiled as her jealousy intensified. She couldn't help how she felt. Steve was a dingus and she didn't see what Tammy saw in him. He was dumb, arrogant, dismissive, and generally irritating. Robin knew in her heart she would be a much better fit for Tammy than that boy. She would actively take an interest in Tammy. She would support her dreams of becoming a singer and entertainer. She wanted to hold her, lift her up when she was down. Hold her hand, kiss her lips, do everything a boyfriend would do, but she couldn't. It was never meant to be.

Tammy just wouldn't feel the same. Robin knew this to be true and knew she could never say how she felt, silently pining for a love she could never have. Waiting forever for someone that wasn't even going to show up. How she wished that Tammy was gay.
