Please Don't Leave Me Alone

The last reason Stevie expected to wake up in the middle of the night was that she was gasping for air and trying to figure out why she couldn't breathe.

Forcing her eyes open as her hands wildly slammed across the skin of the figure that was on top of her, Stevie was trying to figure out who this was and what the f*** was going on. It wasn't until her fingertips ran across a scar on the figure's left hip that she realized who it was -
it was Tom. She parted her lips to try to say something, to say anything for him to realize it was her and not who he was dreaming it was.

She knew Tom had bad nightmares about his past traumas, especially with his abusive father, and she knew that, but the nightmares had never gotten to a point where she thought that she was going to die because of it.

Making fists with her hands, she started punching his sides and doing literally anything she could think of to snap him out of it. She felt her eyes growing heavy, her head starting to spin as it was almost as if she was getting ready to just say goodbye to the world. At the last second, she had a brief thought and a comment he had made a while ago popped in her head "Steph, darlin', no one nails on my skin feel quite like yours." Opening her hands, she dug her nails into Tom's back as hard as she could as his hands slowly started to release the tightened grip that was on her throat.

"Steph? Oh darlin' I - Steph, baby, please don't leave me alone. I -"

Usually, Stevie finds it cute when his southern drawl is prominent, but the fear in his voice as she gasped to catch her breath was something that broke her heart. Slowly sitting up in bed as he rolled to the left of her, Stevie leaned over to find the knob to turn the bedside lamp on so Tom could truly see it was her and he still wasn't stuck in whatever nightmare he was having.

"Hey, shhh. Come here, baby. I'm not going anywhere, what happened?"

Stevie moved the blanket that was on top of her as she'd open her arms and legs so Tom could crawl up into her embrace. Wrapping her arms around him protectively, his arms snaking around her waist, Stevie rested her chin on the top of his head while her hands slid across his back in a soothing motion. His whole body was shaking and it made Stevie truly struggle that she didn't know how she could help him.

"I - I don't know, darlin'. It was current, I was around this age, and my dad was hitting my mom because she defended the band and I just...snapped. I - I thought I was choking him, Stephanie you have to believe me, I'm so sorry..."

Stevie felt the front of her nightshirt starting to become a bit damp from his tears as she backed away just enough so Tom would force himself to look up at her. "I'm not going anywhere, baby, alright? It was a bad dream, you woke up and I - "

"What if I hadn't, Steph? What if I hadn't until --" Tom paused with his words before he shook his head and buried his face back into her chest before Stevie pulled back once more so he would be forced to look up at her.

"But you didn't, okay? You stopped, I knew what to do to wake you up and I did just that, alright? You're okay, I'm okay. My neck is fine, you're okay, baby...."

"But I'm not, Steph. I still can feel his hands around my throat at random times. His words in the back of my head saying I'd never make it in this business or in life. His remarks of I'd be a terrible husband and father echos in my head. I'll never be okay, Steph." Stevie couldn't relate, her parents supported her dreams until their dying breaths, so she wasn't even going to try to say that she could. All she could do was confirm everything his father said was bullsh*t and remind him every chance he could get.

"Thomas, listen to me okay? As someone who's known you as long as I have, I can say this without any second thought. You are not a terrible father, Will and the girls worship the ground you walk on. You took my kids in like you've known them their entire lives and you don't treat them differently. You're equally an amazing husband and you came back into my life at a time I didn't know I needed your love and friendship to guide me back - and now look at us? As far as the band, you guys are in the f***ing Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, baby. Your last album went number one, look how people loved the documentary and still want new content from you guys. You're everything opposite that your father ever said you were, and I know your Mama is so proud of you" she felt him pull away as it was as if her words were truly sinking in. "Why don't we lay back down and go back to sleep, honey? I'm not going anywhere, baby boy, I'm finally where I always wanted to be"
