Haunted House

October 14th, 2021

The laughing that echoed the SUV as Stevie swung the passenger door open was something that made her heart swell with love - but the reason why the laughter was filling the SUV made Stevie not want to talk for the rest of the evening. When her son called about wanting to do a father/mother evening at a haunted house, she thought it was something sweet due to Will getting a lot of his love for Halloween from Stevie over the years. But, the more they traveled through the haunted house he found, the more she figured out exactly what Will’s plan was. He had made a remark a week earlier that Krissy and the girls wouldn’t go to a haunted house with him this year, and given the only Buckingham boy that’s never betrayed her was a bit bummed so she decided to go with him. Now clearly, due to his actions, she could see why.

Mama, technically I didn’t do anything wrong. It’s not my fault that you were so jumpy”

Stevie narrowed her eyes over to her son as he fully got in the car, pulling her door shut as his laughter started taking over the car all over again. He’s right, technically he didn’t do anything wrong...besides touching Stevie’s back and moving anything and everything he could to spook her. Everytime she felt a chill down her spine, Will would pull at her shirt slightly or take his keyfob and run it across the back of her neck to spook her. Not to mention that he knew exactly where to poke Stevie to make her jump and he used it to his advantage every single time she wasn’t looking.

“Mama, come on, you have to forgive me. Mamaaaaaaa”

Stevie just continued to look over at her son as he started his car, a blank look on her face as she was trying to keep the monotone look on her face instead of breaking out into laughter like she wanted to. All the years she used to scare him as a kid this was payback, but Stevie doesn’t like when anyone has the last laugh when it comes to being scary during the spooky season. It was her holiday and for her own son to be the one to upstage her made her equally proud and annoyed. Turning her eyes to the road as she felt the car start to pull out of the parking spot, Will subsisted his laughing as he started driving.

"Will you forgive me if I buy you a cold brew?"

Turning her head back to him, her left eyebrow raised, Stevie nodded her head as a smile came across her lips. Patting her son's shoulder as he drove, Stevie waited a few seconds until she finally broke her silence.

"You know I will never say no to a cold brew, but remember one thing, my son. Over the years I've taught you a lot when it came to scaring the ones you care about the most, but a good prankster doesn't teach their pupils everything, and we still have a couple of more weeks left in October."

"Oh come on, Mama, it wasn't that bad." Stevie pulled her hand away from her shoulder and went back to looking at the road.

"Oh yeah, because making every noise in the world when I'm trying to make sure I don't trip is nothing. Because poking me when I think I'm hearing things is nothing. I'm never going to a haunted house with you again, William Gregory. I think you knocked ten years off my life - and it's not like I'm young anymore!"

"Mama, you're immortal for one, and two - it was pretty funny watching you jump over and over again. How did it feel being a normal height for a few seconds throughout the evening?"

Clearing her throat, Stevie playfully slapped Will’s arm, both of them laughing before she used her free hand to point out of the window. “Don’t think I forgot about my cold brew you said you’d buy - and don’t think I’ll forget to get you back, my son, payback is a bitch, remember?”
