Near Death Experience

Near  Death  Experience

"Robert... her fever is getting worse." Georgiana said looking down at her daughter. Young Lorraine Moran was eight years old and up until the last day had been in perfect health. But lately, she had begun to complain of stomach pains. She had begun running a fever and soon she couldn't eat or even move without discomfort. Her mother sat at her bedside, tending to her. Her father standing nearby.

Georgiana often overreacted to Lorraine being sick. Even if she had a cold she thought she needed a doctor, she always needed a doctor. So Robert was far more reluctant to call for a doctor now, the called from everything it seemed with Lorraine. And it wasn't her fault of course but Georgiana's. Her overbearing mothering.

"Georgiana we can't call the doctor for everything. She's... just having a little stomach bug or something. It will pass." He said watching Lorraine in her bed. She was somewhat pale, all except for her cheeks which were bright red and very warm to the touch. She let out a soft groan as her mother placed a cool cloth on her head.

"If she isn't well by morning we'll phone the doctor okay?" Robert asked, Georgiana nodded. She leaned over and kissed Lorraine's cheek, stood, and reluctantly left the room. Lorraine could remember the sound of the door shutting before she slipped away into sleep.

Lorraine woke a few hours later, she woke to bright light in her eyes. She groaned softly feeling the pain in her stomach. Opening her eyes she saw her Grandmother above her. Her Grandmother was a frequent visitor, usually, she was very cheerful with Lorraine but this time she was... forceful.

"Lorraine! Lorraine wake up!" Her Grandmother's looming figure now blocking the light. Again Lorraine whimpered at the pain she felt. "Gran it hurts..." she whined. "Call for your father... yell for him now! Don't look at the light, look at me, keep your eyes on me. Now yell for your father!"

Lorraine nodded and weakly called out for her father. "Yell Lorraine!" She pushed again harder, if Lorraine hadn't been in so much pain she might have been upset with the tone her Grandmother was taking with her. "Daddy!" She finally screamed out. Moving and screaming so loudly caused her so much pain she passed out.

Lorraine didn't wake until almost a day later, she was no longer in her bedroom but a hospital room. She felt pain again but nowhere near as bad as it had been before. Her mother smiled seeming to be relieved, her father stood at the foot of her bed speaking with a doctor. Robert tried to speak quietly with him but she could still hear them.

"She nearly died Mr. Moran... the appendicitis was severe. If she hadn't woken and alerted you when she did you'd have lost your daughter." Robert looked riddled with guilt while Georgiana just seemed relieved that Lorraine was going to be alright. The doctor soon left and Lorraine looked to her father. "I didn't wake up on my own. There was a light... a bright light... and Gran she-" Lorraine was cut off by her father.

"Pumpkin the white light you remember was the lights during your surgery. Just rest." He said in a gentle but firm tone. Normally Lorraine might have protested but she was still in pain and very tired so she didn't. Instead, she laid back and closed her eyes. Years later she'd truly understand what had happened to her. That she had been suffering from appendicitis and was near death, so close to the other side. Her Grandmother, the spirit of her Grandmother stood in the way of her passing knowing that it was not yet her time. She woke Lorraine, which made her alert her parents. Without that Lorraine wouldn't have survived.
