Leaving town had been one of the hardest things Mackenzie had ever had to do, but it had been something that she’d needed to do. She’d needed to get out and get away from the people that had made her life unbearable over recent times, but that also meant leaving her best friend, her girlfriend, and her sisters. It had been a hard but a necessary decision, or at least that was how Mackenzie had tried to justify it to herself. It was how she’d tried to make sense of her decisions, but since then, she’d come to regret it. Leaving had caused so many people so much pain but most importantly, it had caused Avery so much pain. The blonde was a pain in the ass half of the time, but she was also the red head’s favorite person, and knowing that she’d hurt someone she cared so much about, broke her own heart.

“You're mine, forever. Doesn't matter what anyone says” Mackenzie finally said, breaking the long silence that had filled the space between them for several uncomfortable minutes. “I don’t care who you’re with or who I’m with because you and me? We’re endgame, Ave. We’re destiny.” The redhead had never been a believer in fate or destiny, but in that moment, she knew that Avery was her one true love and she was meant to end up with her, though given all that had happened between the two of them, she wasn’t quite sure when that would happen, but she knew it would. “Don’t say that,” the blonde finally interrupted, causing Mackenzie to fall silent. “You can’t say that. You left. You broke any chance of there ever being a me and you again, Kenz. Just go.” Mackenzie watched as Avery turned away from her, but before she could completely face away, the redhead reached out and grabbed her arm, stopping her ex-girlfriend mid-turn. “Ave..” The blonde shook her head defiantly but Mackenzie turned the blonde back around; their eyes locking for the first time since Mackenzie had arrived on Avery’s doorstep thirty minutes beforehand.

She could feel her heart racing within her chest and the butterflies invaded her stomach as the redhead pulled the blonde close, their bodies pressed together as Mackenzie placed a firm kiss against the blonde’s lips. She had no right to put any of this on Avery; she was the one who had left, but it had been a mistake and from the moment Mackenzie had arrived back in town she’d been trying to make things right and had been trying to make it up to Avery. “It’s you and..” Mackenzie began, but before she could finish her train of thought, the blonde had pushed Mackenzie back, breaking their kiss as she created a bigger gap between the two of them. “Kenz, please go,” she whispered, tears stinging her light blue orbs. Mackenzie wanted to wrap her arms around Avery and protect her from the world, but what could she say? What could she do? If anything, Avery needed protection from Mackenzie and the redhead knew it. “I’m sorry,” Kenzie whispered, turning on her heels as she slowly walked to the door, but before she walked out, she turned to glance at her ex-girlfriend. “I’m not giving up on you. Not now, not ever.”
