APRIL MARATHON: PROMPT SIX

The Campsite

“Did you hear that? What was it?” Mackenzie whispered as she glanced around, but all she could see was darkness. She hated camping and this was the exact reason! She wasn’t the kind of girl who got a kick out of sleeping under the stars or roasting marshmallows by the fire; she hated that kinda stuff, but yet here she was. Her sister had convinced her that going out with some friends would be a good distraction, but now the redhead was having serious doubts about it. Breathe and relax. She knew that she was probably just overreacting or worrying about nothing, but she could barely see a thing and couldn’t help but start to panic. Biting down on the corner of her mouth, the brunette turned and moved back into the tent, searching through her things for a flashlight. “Kenz.” Turning her attention to her sister, Mackenzie took the flashlight from her older sister and moved back towards the entrance of the tent, shining it out into the beyond.

As she shone the flashlight into the darkness, she felt a shiver run up her spine. She felt like she was being watched, but she couldn’t see anything at all. “Rox, there is something out there. I know there is.” Maybe this was why it was called Devil’s Tramping Ground, Mackenzie wasn’t sure, but she knew that she wished they were still back in Hartsville, even if it hadn’t always been smooth sailing. Hartsville certainly had its moments and had left Kenzie with a certain amount of PTSD, but at least she knew what she was getting herself into. “Wait, is that Jordan?!” she whispered, nudging Roxy as she waved the flashlight around. “Over there.” She could see a figure close by but couldn’t quite make out who it was. She didn’t know Jordan all that well, but she had seen him around town and knew him as her baby sister’s 10th grade English teacher, but she didn’t understand what he was doing or why he seemed to be creeping around the tramping ground.

Running her tongue along her lower lip, she raised the flashlight and hit the palm of her hand with it as the light seemed to flicker on and off for a moment. Turning to face Roxy, the redhead grabbed the blonde and pulled her from the tent, deciding to go and explore and find out exactly what it was that was hiding in the bushes. She didn’t really think it was Jordan, but it wasn’t as if he would have been the first serial killer that she’d come across - not that she thought he was like that at all. He was married to her friend, but maybe that was why Kenzie found herself needing to find answers. “Kenz, you’re worrying about nothing. It was probably just a wild animal or something.”
