the reunion - throwback.

janurary 28th, 2002

it had been fifteen years since fleetwood mac had gotten together to record an album, and even though stevie’s partner in crime christine mcvie decided to sit this one out, remaining in kent, england where she’s been since the day following the opening night of stevie’s ‘enchanted’ tour back in 1998, stevie nicks stood in front of a house that was rented for two reasons. one was to record the band’s first studio album since 1987’s “tango in the night”, but for a documentary, crew to record the entire process from start to the first night of the eventual tour that will come once the album was released. inhaling a deep breath, the frontwoman would slowly walk towards the front door as her assistant went in front of her just enough to open the door for her, stevie carrying a spirit catcher from her house in phoenix, something she believed would bring positive energy to the house - and with this group of people recording together they needed it. where a lot has changed since 1987, including all of them kicking their hard drug and obsessive drinking habits, the tempers and alpha male personalities that often clashed still remained. once she entered the house and walked down the hallway to what was probably considered the ‘living room’ of the house, the sound of mick talking brought a soft smile to her lips, but it was the sound of a man who she hadn’t seen in eight months who’s voice briefly made her stop in her tracks. not since he got on a plane in kent, england and came back home has stevie seen him, not since she watched his hands around her ex-boyfriend’s throat after he found out danny laid his hands on stevie, not since the bittersweet reminder that what could’ve - and should’ve in stevie’s eyes - been that’s plagued her mind since he left kent has her chocolate brown orbs rested on the man who saved her life yet again. lindsey buckingham - her lindsey

walking in the room as the first thing she heard was lindsey asking what she had in her hand, his voice alone bringing a soft smile to her face that she fought hard to hide in front of the camera’s, stevie walked into the view before answering him. ”it’s a spirit catcher, where can i put it?” hearing lindsey comment on her putting it over in her area if she wanted to or placing it somewhere where it could wash the entire room, the fact he remembered the littlest things like that made her melt, it was the way his hand every so briefly grazed her back that made her heart stop for a few brief seconds, but it was the way he slid in a quick ‘i missed you’ before mick came over to say hello that made her double take briefly. feeling mick take the catcher out of her hand snapped her out of her thoughts, stevie quickly clearing her throat ”it’s been in my house in phoenix and it’s such a lucky piece that i thought - you know.” stevie slid her jacket off before placing it over the back of a chair. ”well, the bad news is i got absolutely no rest - the good news is i wrote four songs and i put them on a cd this morning” handing the cd to lindsey, stevie starts discussing with john and mick on how she was thinking about the distinct sound the ‘rumours’ lineup of fleetwood mac as she wrote. taking a few minutes to catch up with mick and john, she felt lindsey nudge her shoulder before handing her a cup of iced coffee as she took a sip. ”ooh, you remember how i like it” a smile formed on her place as she sat down at the soundtable next to lindsey while he played her four songs.

not saying a word about any of them until “silver girl”, which she explained was about her good friend sheryl crow, once the cd was done she briefly looked over at lindsey who had a prideful smile on his lips. ”you know, if you keep writing like this we’ll make this a double album yet”. a slight giggle briefly escaped stevie’s lips as she grabbed her glass to drink more of her iced coffee. while the band briefly discussed this and that, mick and john commented how they were going to go get something to eat and asked if lindsey or stevie wanted anything. both shaking their head no, the bassist and the drummer got ready and quickly headed out as stevie looked around briefly in the room as her eyes rested on the cameraman for a few moments before she walked over and hugged lindsey. when she went to pull away it was the way that he wouldn’t let her go that made her melt back into his arms again before she was able to briefly pull away from his embrace ”i should - i should probably go” she mumbled, grabbing her jacket as she felt lindsey gently grab her right hand, rubbing his thumb on her inner forearm as the familiar feeling of his callused skin due to hand picking his guitar strings instead of using a pick bringing a sense of normalcy briefly to her mind. ”i missed you, too” her voice was soft, a lump in her throat as she let go of her jacket as it would fall back. ”stay for a while, the cameracrew is getting ready to pack up for the evening and i wanna work on a cut of bleed to love her” stevie bit her bottom lip softly, her knowing that song was about her while she turned her head slightly. ”lindsey i --” stevie paused before turning around to face him, her eyes locking in on the same icy blue green eyes that she’s sung about, that she’s gotten lost in so many times over the years. the same eyes that were her saving grace a few months ago.

not saying a word as the camera crew would pack up their things and leave for the evening, stevie’s breath started to stagger as lindsey’s arms slithered around her midsection. the look up at him intensified, her heart all but racing out of her chest as he let a soft smile form on his face before bending down and gently pressing his lips on hers. ”lindsey, baby, the cameras we - we can’t do this” the pain in stevie’s voice as she stated the reality was heartbreaking, the blonde’s hands resting on his arms before her fingertips glided up and down his arms. ”we can if you want to, we just have to be a bit more sneaky about it” the confidence on his face as he spoke proved he wanted this just as much as she did, and even though they weren’t together it was still like they were. stevie knew this was going to turn into another episode of ‘the stevie and lindsey show’ and she knew it was going to be a bit more difficult because of the cameras and because of his wife being in a house next door with their two children, but after everything with her ex-boyfriend lindsey was the only man she fully trusted and she craved the comfort she had with him eight months ago, the sense of feeling safe that he gave her when his arms were around her. and yes, they couldn’t be anywhere close to how they were in kent, the fact he was right here meant danny wasn’t, meant she could contiune the healing process after the messy relationship and - for a few months anyway - still have her lindsey by her side.
