Forbidden Love (AU)
Love has a funny way of bringing the up most terror in a person’s eyes. Why was love so scary? Roni had no clue. Standing in the Avenger’s quarters, the brunette shook her head as she pulled the sleeve of her blue sweater down just a bit. It was a way for her mind to occupy herself without her needing to do much. “I’ve fallen in love with you, Veronica.” Steve’s voice spoke up calmly as he leaned back against the table not even a few feet away from her. Shaking her head again, Roni couldn’t help the feeling of angst creeping through her veins. The breathing hitched in the back of her throat, “Y-You can’t..” She started, “I-I can’t.” She admitted and looked away from him, “W-We can’t..” She rambled on and on until the sound of his footsteps broke her train of thoughts, “Roni..” He spoke her name which caused her to shake her head even more.
Feeling his arms embrace her, Roni avoided all eye-contact with her Captain in front of her as she stumbled backwards out of his grasp, “Do NOT love me!” She shouted at him. She hated the idea of him falling in love with her. Hell, she felt the same way, but she was too blinded by fear to admit it. “Why not?” His voice brought her back to reality. His voice was calm and alluring. All he wanted to do was comfort the girl breaking down in front of him.
Love is a terrifying thing.
In the end, when you love someone, you have to face the fact that you could lose them. Sometimes life throws an unexpected wrench in your way. It might be that you're in jeopardy of losing your career, your freedom, or worst of all, you might even find out that a loved one has died. Nothing can prepare you for what life has to offer. More importantly, nothing can prepare you for what love has in store for you. Love can be the most amazing adventure anyone can experience, but at the end of the day - love was just as scary as anything you set your mind too.
Roni looked down at the floor beneath her feet as she shook her head once more. There was no use in ignoring her emotions at this point. Steve has seen every side of her. He has been with her through almost everything these past few months. Steve had his own way in making her feel better even when she claimed no one could. “I - I hurt people, even when I don’t mean to.” She informed the man in front of her, “My powers.. sometimes I..” She began as she took a deep breath, “Sometimes I cannot control them..” She admitted. “The last thing I want to do is hurt you Steve. I - I don’t want to hurt you..” She informed him.
Roni and Steve had become inseparable over the short period of time in knowing one another. Ever since she joined The Avengers, there was this connection that they both had made and neither of them really understood it until now. Their chemistry was undeniably strong, and Roni wouldn’t want it any other way. It terrified her to know the end to feel the way she did. One simple thing could go wrong, and all hell would break loose. Who was to say that she had control? No one understood the being she was, so how could he be so trusting with her? Steve's blue orbs watched her, and he softly brought his hand up to caress her cheek, “You won’t, trust me." He said softly, "I believe in you, babygirl.” He spoke calmly once again.
His words tore her heart to pieces, and she couldn’t help herself. She leaned into the warmth of his touch. It only lasted a few seconds, before she reached up and removed his hand from her cheek. “Steve." She said sternly, "Neither of us know that.” She continued as she looked up at him, “I can’t put you in danger. Ever. Not again.” She informed him, “I almost lost you once.. We almost lost you.. I - I can’t go through that again.” She continued as she took in a deep breath, “I just can’t.” It was one excuse after another that continuously forced herself to hide from him even further.
She swallowed a lump in her throat as she finally met his eyes and she looked up at him, "I'm sorry.." With those being her last words, she spun on her heels and ran out of the room. She didn’t exactly want to deny what she was feeling, but at the same time she was too scared.
Too scared of falling in love, too scared of being hurt, too scared of hurting him, and too scared of losing him.
Was that bad?
