No Rest for the Wicked
Thorton, Iowa. Population 458 in the 2010 census, and no doubt that number declined in the years that followed. A town that time and a modern economy left behind. It all started in 1958 when I35 bypassed Thornton, diverting all those summer tourists on their way from Des Moines to Clear Lake. Then the textile mill closed, and Sears left town, followed by the Macy's and J.C. Penney. But there was still the St Mary's Hospital that served all of Cerro Gordo County. Although as people drifted away from Thornton, more and more patients started going to the big Blue Cross facility - a campus they called it - in Mason City. Besides, St. Mary's had this reputation. Strange occurrences. People who'd been treated at the hospital, some of them came out wrong, it was said. Others thought the hospital was haunted. Some said it was the entire town. And maybe it was. Maybe it was.
