My name is Neveah Temples, but everyone just calls me Eva. I suffer from a form of Psychosis. My condition was first noticed when I was six years old. I can’t remember much of my life at that time, all I really know is what my parents told me. They always thought I was a creative child, lots of imaginary friends but they realized there was something wrong with me when at six years old I tried to drown my baby sister, all I would tell them is the voices were telling me that she was a mermaid and I had to set her free. So, it's fair to say I have been in and out of therapy for most of my life.

The first time I was locked away in a mental institution was when I was fifteen years old. Puberty had escalated my condition and the medication I was on wasn’t the right fit for the hormone change I was going through. I began stalking a girl that I had a small crush on, my condition turned the crush into obsession, I thought she was in love with me, created this entire relationship inside my own head. Following her around and getting jealous of anyone talking to her. There are points that I don’t even remember, I just blacked out and woke up outside her house. They locked me up after I pushed her boyfriend down some stairs at school, he never fully recovered and lost a football scholarship.

My parents moved us several states away from the town where I grew up, away from the friends who were now terrified of me. I spent two years in the institution while my family rebuilt their life and when I was free to return to them, I was put on new meds. When I am on my meds, I feel numb or empty and when I am off them, I am filled with creativity and mass amounts of energy, until the hallucinations and delusions start, and I eventually hurt someone. I just want to feel normal; I just don’t want to be paralyzed by my own emotions, trapped in my own mind.

Now I control myself through routines, the same pattern most days. I wake up at the same time, I go to work, I keep my distance from people socially, I come home and go to bed at the same time every night. I have never been in a real relationship as it can complicate my routine. I control myself medically, either legally or otherwise. I come to these meetings, always outside of my hometown. Where I listen to strangers talk about their problems and then I tell them how broken I am. That’s my life and it will never be anything more.
