biography

William Jae Parker was born in Brooklyn, New York with a twin brother; Thomas Alan Parker. He was known as Tommy to WIlliam, and they were the best of friends. They were merely kids, but Will always believe he’d have his twin with him wherever they went. They loved the sea so much and so they had always talked about wanting to live by the sea together when they were old enough to move out away from their parents. Their parents. What screaming messes they were. All they ever did in the house was yell. Whether they were yelling at each other, at the little boys or at themselves, someone was always yelling. It was what developed Will’s hatred for loud voices and noises. He despised anything that was too loud and that would remind him of how his parents did nothing but yell around the house. But he had Tommy, that was all that mattered. If one of them got yelled at, they’d just build a fort in their bunkbeds and hide there. It was just how they spent seven years of their lives.

It wasn’t until they were seven years old that things took a dark turn for Will. The world was once a beautiful bright place to him. He was mature for his age, and so he knew something was wrong when he and Tommy went out with their parents one day to the doctor for a check up and they had gloomy faces on. They told him nothing was wrong when he asked, and though he nodded and went off to play with Tommy again, he didn’t hear them yell, and that was what alarmed him the most. Everything was later revealed when he saw them take Tommy multiple times from him to go to that doctor again. He wondered why his brother had to go to these check ups and he didn’t but he wasn’t allowed to ask questions.

When his father came back one day and his mother and brother were not there, that was when Will lashed out and demanded that he knew what was going on and where his brother was. His father sat him down that day right outside on the porch, by the yellow flowers that didn’t look as bright as they used to when Tommy and him picked them out, and he told Will that Tommy was sick. Will asked why they didn’t give him the strawberry flavored medicine they took when they were sick so he could be better, but then he understood that Tommy was a different kind of sick. And so he asked his father if he could go see him. His father didn’t decline and did take him there to see Tommy. He thought that wasn’t his brother when he saw him. But he looked into his eyes and saw the same brown eyes that matched his.

From then on, Will refused to leave. He refused to go home. All he wanted to do was spend time with his brother. All he wanted to do was pray for him to get better and go back to playing outside with him. But day by day he could tell Tommy was getting weaker, more frail. And he knew that one night when his parents woke him up to tell him that Tommy was going to sleep soon. He knew they wanted him to say goodbye. Goodbye to his only companion, his only brother.

“Tommy?” Will asked as he climbed onto the bed to grab his brother’s hand and sit by him as he could barely open his eyes.

“I’m very tired and sleepy, Willy. I should sleep.” Tommy told him as he slowly started closing his eyes.

“Wait, wait, please. Please don’t sleep right now.” Will begged as he held his brother’s hand so tightly in both of his.

“I’m really tired.” Tommy countered with a pout that he seemed like he could barely do.

“I love you so much. I love you and you’re always going to be my best friend. No one else. I will be with you again one day, Tommy, I promise.” Will assured him as tears started streaming down his face and he watched his brother nod a little and smile.

“We’ll always be together. I love you, too. We’ll talk again when I wake up, okay? Promise?” Tommy responded to Will as he shut his eyes and he could hear the heart monitor going slower.

“I promise.” Will said just as he heard the long beep, and knew that this was it as his brother’s hand went limp in his own.
