And I heard your voice as clear as day. And you told me I should concentrate. It was all so strange and so surreal that a ghost should be so practical.

It was a cool crisp April morning when Starlee made her way into the world. Her mother was only sixteen years old at the time and the entire town was on edge to figure out who the father was. Her mother was sure with was a soldier she had a fling with before he was shipped out, but it wasn't believed by all. The fact of the matter was that Starlee was without a father. She would be raised at the hands of her mother, and her pastor grandfather.
Her childhood was fairly normal for being raised by a shameful pastor and an immature mother. Starlee spent nearly all of her free time at church where her grandfather kept a steady eye on her. Her mother refused to settle down and only wanted to be with her friends. It would prove to be a mistake when Starlee was a little over five years old. Her mother was out with some friends when the car she was in was involved in an accident. Out of the four people involved in the accident, there were no survivors.
Her grandfather now had more shame than ever. Not only did his only child have a baby out of wedlock, but she was also a dangerous drunk who ruined multiple lives along with hers. His anger was beyond his faith and the only release he had was on Starlee. For years she endured his wrath behind closed doors, all the while pretending everything was fine when around the congregation and public. It was when she turned fifteen that the abuse evolved into something much worse. She saw it coming a mile away and did everything imaginable to avoid it.
Leave all your love and your longing behind if you want to survive
Cause what's in a name, Oh I still remain the same
Starlee hated him. She hated her grandfather with every ounce of her being. He wore her down till she was only a little shell of herself. Promising to leave her alone if she did simple things like cleaning and cooking, and then still sneaking into her bedroom in the middle of the night. She was able to deter him by placing locks on her bedroom door and only daring to shower when he was asleep for the night.
After dealing with everything for over two years, Starlee had had enough. She wanted to leave the moment she turned eighteen but he wouldn't allow her. He would kill her before he let her leave. There was only one thing she could do; she had to end him before he destroyed her. That is exactly what she did.
Starlee played the part of the devastated granddaughter. It was officially ruled a heart attack that claimed her grandfather and the entire town was in mourning. The relief that Star felt knowing she was finally safe was unmatched. She was finally able to live her life and go off to college. She learned a whole lot and nothing at all. Three years in, she realize a degree just wasn't for her. It was around this time a lawyer contacted her and told her of the will her grandfather left. He wanted her to have the house. The colonial home where he repeatedly abused her. It was a sick joke, but it brought her back to her hometown.
Starlee sold the house and used the money to buy her own little ranch style just outside of town. She started working the register in a bakery where she soon learned to bake. It changed her life and brought her joy.

Balsam Valley, ME, is a classic New England village with white church steeples and streets lined with quaint houses, B&Bs, and other locally owned businesses. With only a few thousand populations, most find Balsam Valley to be the best-kept secret on the east coast. Unfortunately, sometimes the best-kept secrets arenโt always full of sheer satisfaction. There is always a price to be paid. That cost usually ends up being oneโs life savings, or just their life; it's paid to the wealthiest family in Balsam Valley, the Sullivanโs.
Dr. Keith Sullivan, the sole investor of Balsam Valley Labs, owns just about everything in Balsam Valley. The businesses he doesnโt outright own, he has a hand in running, legally or illegally. Even the citizens that seem to have a billable skill seem to be enslaved to the man in one way or another. Each of them pursues their freedom or payout, a reward that is scarcely given. Some say even the eldest son of Dr. Sullivan is stuck in Balsam Valley Labs working on finding a way to bend space and time, not that this tidbit is known to the rest of Balsam Valley.
