Every year on 6th December Steve celebrated an old German tradition. Why? When Steve was a child, his mother often sat by his bed and told him stories about pirates, Indians and cowboys. Around Christmas though, the stories grew more festive and the tone in her voice turned into a mystical one. Instead of keeping it dark in their small apartment, she lightened up candles in Steveβs room, their light warm and gentle. Long shadows danced on the naked cold walls and the winter grew a little nicer for the young boy.
As often as she could, Sarah sat by her sonβs site and told him all those wonderful stories. Peter Pan. The Christmas Carol. But one of Steveβs absolute favorites was the story about St. Nicholas and the little tradition attached to that story. The little boy has always hoped, that St. Nicholas would put something into his cleaned shoes too, but there was never anything. Later, he understood, that his mother just didnβt have the money to fill his shoes with candies, chocolate, nuts and apples. Instead, she has filled his heart with love and the darkness of winter with light.
Now he was an adult and all that was left of his mother, were those loving memories he was carrying in his heart. To remember her, he has decided, years ago, to celebrate Saint Nicholas day. Because it was the perfect way to get himself and his friends into the right mood for Christmas. Because he liked it to make everyone smile, who had a special spot in his heart.
Very early in the morning the soldier sneaked into the house, being as quiet as even possible. Checking that his friend was still full asleep he smiled. Time to spread some magic. Right next to the bed he placed some candies, chocolate and some home-baked cookies.
