The Forge

Dr. Ben Thrace

The shuttle was comfortable as Benjamin Thrace and Kathryn Janeway moved about the interior. Ben hummed slightly to himself as he adjusted their course and updated their ETA. Kathryn shuffled around in the rear of the cabin, checking their travel items. The two were on holiday, finally taking a break away from the hustle and bustle of their busy professional lives to spend time together. It was more than just a simple vacation for them: it was their anniversary. Three years together, a long time by any career officer's standards. Somehow they had weathered the long distance, being at odds with one another, and all around lack of inclusion in certain circles (she DID out-rank him after all) to hold onto a lasting relationship. The scheduling had been difficult, but both senior officers had finally gained the clearance to get away and spend nearly two weeks together. Two weeks on Vulcan. How Ben had convinced her even he wasn't sure. Ben loved deserts and was particularly partial to Vulcan's, a latent image from his days on the planet years ago romanticized to mystical proportions. Though he had spent nearly three years on the planet almost fourteen years ago, he had never ventured into the deep desert the way he and Janeway now planned to. To take the ancient path through the Forge and to Mt. Seleya was a path traditionally sought only by Vulcans attempting the Kolhinar. It wasn't expressly forbade to outsiders, but it was something none actively sought. Most took the terrestrial transport to the mountain, and in recent years a transporter platform had even been installed to allow dignitaries immediate access. But for Ben and Kathryn, they would be doing things the hard way, the way Vulcans had done for nearly two millenia before.

"ETA in four minutes." Ben called out. The planet loomed before them, a massive orange ball dwarfed by it's twin suns in the background. Various ships and satellites could already be seen in orbit, and Ben couldn't wait to leave all that behind and strike out with just the ceremonial pack. Ben had read nearly every story he could get his hands on about Vulcan's deep desert. Though majorly anecdotal, all the stories had one thing in common: the intensely personal and intimate and awe-inspiring reverence the desert instilled in those that traversed it. While vague on their experiences, all those that chose to talk about it spoke of a deep revelation about themselves that only the heat and drought and space of the desert could show. Without ever really realizing it it had been what Ben craved, something that cleared the murkiness from his being and allowed him to move on with his life. He didn't believe that he was holding back anything, but lately his darker thoughts roused him late at night and kept him wondering. He hoped the Forge would prove to be a crucible for him as it had been for so many others, and burn away the darkness and let him be.

Swiveling in his chair, he turned to Kathryn and watched her as she tucked the last of their rations into their respective packs. They would be traveling light in order to honor the path, but he had promised to at least bring an emergency kit just in case something went wrong. He watched her pack it carefully, smiling at her all the while. Kathryn was a scientist at heart, just like he was, but he knew she wasn't truly comfortable unless there was a tricorder nearby. At least that kit would carry everything conveniently.

"We are all set. I have distributed or equipment and rations as equally as I could, and our desert fatigues are ready," Kathryn said as she rose from her hunched position and placed her hands on her hips. "Time to suit up."  Ben smiled at her again. She looked great, better and better each day. There had been a time for the both of them that neither thought she would ever be healthy again. She had been sick for so long, so close to death, and though their time together had it's moments of fun, there had always been the unspoken promise of better days....once she recovered. Unspoken because at the time neither could be sure she would ever recover. Now it seemed they were both intent of fulfilling that promise, and this trip would be the beginning.

Ben stood and crossed the small space to be nearer to her, and without ceremony began stripping off his uniform.

"Not bashful at all are you," She asked him as she moved to give him space. Now wearing just his green undergarments, it was his turn to place his hands on his hips.

"I see no reason to be. It's not like I am totally naked and it's not like you haven't seen it before," he continued to smile at her, hoping his voice would maintain its even delivery. He knew he probably looked ridiculous, but he didn't care. They were on vacation and it was supposed to be fun. Besides, he was absolutely excited.

Kathryn sighed. "You would think you have never been on shore leave before," she told him softly, but he could see the grin creeping into the corners of her mouth. She was excited too. It had been a long time since she had had a break, and longer still that they had had a break together and could actually enjoy it. This was truly something...for the both of them.

"The shuttle is programmed to land just outside of Shi'kahr, where the journey begins. They have the paths out of the city gates marked for foot travel or for conventional transit. The foot paths out of the city are all the same, but after about a mile they stop. It will be up to us to choose our own path through the Forge and to the mountain after that," Ben explained as he put on his desert fatigues. He turned his back to her to allow her the privacy to change, and headed back to the pilot's chair to bring them in for a landing. As they entered the atmosphere, Ben readied himself for what was to come. This was a long time coming, and he knew that he and Kathryn deserved this time together, to learn about one another and to re-connect. He hoped the desert could restore all they had lost and then some....

Kathryn had to touch it

It seemed like a mirage at first, having been an unattainable object in the distance for the past week and a half. Could it be that they really had just made it through the Forge? Benjamin Thrace and Kathryn Janeway had survived in a territory where so many before them had fallen. Janeway reached out a gloved hand and ran it over the rigid face of Mt. Seleya. If there was anyone around, other than Ben, she wouldnt have noticed. In that moment, all she could do was feel. Looking up to the top, as far she could, she allowed her mouth to open slightly, in awe. Would they have managed this feat had they not had each other? No one would ever know.

She bowed her head in deep respect of those had also lived through their journeys, and for those who had not, wondering for a second if those who had, had touched the mountain as she was doing right then.

Kathryn pushed back the tan hood of her cloak, hearing the grains of sand fall softly onto the top of her pack, as she also lifted her eyewear to replace the hood, as a result, holding back the stray hairs from her forehead.

Marvelous she said, both in response to Thraces suggestion of going home, as well as her amazement in their trying voyage. She squeezed his hand tighter and then turned to him, We made it. WE made it, Kathryn smiled, her teeth standing out brighter than ever in contrast to her tanned and dirty face.

Removing her hand from the mountain, she used it to reveal Bens face. This made her smile even wider. She could see him every single day and be the happiest woman in the galaxy. So strong, handsome with such love in his eyes for her at that moment. Disregarding their filthy state, Janeway rose up on her toes, and kissed Ben on the lips.

Yes, something new, she agreed. Giving the mountain one last look Im ready when you are, darling.

The magnificent mountain of Seleya loomed before them, her impressive shadow casting them in cooling darkness as they stepped closer and closer to her base. Time and time again they had looked into the sweltering distance to see its snow capped peak teasing them,  and now there were just meters away from completing a journey that was more about their own introspection and discovery than the trek to get here.

Ben walked silently beside Kathryn, and though his body was tired and heavy with sweat and sand, his heart and mind were light and clear and free from the oppressive anxiety he had built up over the last few months. So many things had changed for the both of them during this last half a year, so many times the both of them had nearly given up and thrown in the towel on their relationship. But now they stood together, stronger than ever before, with a wellspring of love running between the two of them that was unparalleled in their mutual histories.

Benjamin Thrace, a man who had been through so much and still pushed to get through more, suddenly found himself with a willing and able companion who would never abandon him, never mislead or distrust him, someone who loved him fully and put that above their petty arguments and returned his love with kind strength. For his part, he found himself more and more dependent upon their bond as time passed, and this journey through the desert only further illustrated to him that his need for her was absolute.

How many times had he tried to push her away, allowed for situations to escalate to a point where she would have to choose herself over their relationship, or vice versa, instead of attempting a compromise? How many times had they come close to losing all they built together, only to pull it back from the flames at the last moment and once again salvage something good from it?

This trip had been just what he needed. It stripped him of his coping mechanisms, made him face the reality of a life without the idle distractions of technology and other people, took away his ability to multitask and lose himself in work, and for the first time in nearly ten years he confronted his biggest fear: he didn't want to be alone. And when the desolate landscape of the searing Vulcan desert showed him what was true loneliness, a hand slipped into his and pushed a warmth into his heart that had nothing to do with body heat. She was his and he was hers, and just as they had finally come to the base of Seleya, his heart and mind finally synced and he realized one immutable truth: He was in love with Kathryn Janeway and he never wanted to leave her.

"Come on Kathryn," He said softly as he took her hand once more. "Let us end this journey and go home. It is time for something new...."

Kathryn didnt have to dry her tears away; the climate did that for her. She stayed a few more seconds in Bens arms, not wanting to separate from him at all, but knowing that if they were going to get home, theyd have to finish their trek to the base of Seleya. She stepped back and took his hand in hers. This contact would have to do.

As they moved on, she couldnt help but look over and up at him, a newfound sense of love and loyalty in her heart for this man. Though desert attire covered his features, there was still something that compelled her to gaze upon him with adoration. Shed been in love before, but she now held so much affection for Thrace that she wondered how shed ever gotten along without him in her life before. Mt. Seleya grew larger as they quietly made their way closer to the destination. And Thrace was right. That need to climb it was gone now.

Her feet ached like never before, the muscles around her lungs and chest were sore and it worsened with each breath she took, however, they werent stopping. This was the big push. They were so close

This was incredible. Benjamin Thrace, a man who prided himself on control, felt such a complete loss of it in this moment. And he didn't care. The cap on the fountain head had been removed, and as Kathryn rushed to him, collapsed into his chest and seemingly surrendered herself to her own feelings, he did the same. His arms came up around her and he held her close, his body taking in all that she poured out and radiating it back to her.

Amazing.  There was that voice again. Only, not really a voice. More like a feeling. Ben felt again as though they were being watched but for the first time he didn't care. This was about him and her. Whatever was watching them, prodding them on in this manner...none of it matter. The walls had finally come down for him and her, and they were on the edge of something new that he had never experienced before.

"Kathryn....let's go. Let's get away from here. We don't need to complete the journey. This trek was about self discovery, introspection at its finest and we have done that. More than I think has ever been achieved here before. We now both know how we feel, what we want. There is no need to go to Seleya. We have our answers. Let's go and enjoy this...at home."

A deep sense of satisfaction filled Ben at his words, and he was partially convinced that some of that feeling wasn't his own. Vulcan held onto its strange and complicated mysteries better than any planet he ever visited. The deep spirituality of the people seemed to permeate even here in the desert, and, if Ben didn't know better, he would even go so far as to say something here shaped it all.

But it was no matter. Right now, the only concern of his was tucked tightly to his chest. And he wanted nothing more than to be alone with her in a more comfortable setting.

Customarily, Janeway wouldve analyzed Bens words to a point where they wouldve been complicated beyond their meaning, creating a need for further dialogue between the two before she got a clearer grasp on what he was conveying to her. But, for some reason, she didnt do that this time.

Yes, she replied, lowering her head and looking at his hand holding hers. It did make sense. Perfect sense. Ive been so lost and had no idea. This nagging feeling of the end was creeping up on me, like a stalking sensation. I told myself that things would work. I told myself that I was just being silly but I couldnt shake it. I simply knew I was destined to lose you. Im glad I was wrong.

For seemingly no reason, the admiral felt a sudden rush of emotion that couldnt be contained, as it was too powerful and had caught her by complete surprise. A tugging at her heart, a sting in her eyes, and the floodgates opened. She fell against Bens chest, weeping uncontrollably. It wasnt determinable sadness, or joy, that caused her breakdown. It was more or less a release of all that shed forced back in an effort to remain strong and unphased. The admiral tried to stop, however, it was literally impossible, as if something were draining her and drawing out all she had.

Im sorry, she said through hiccupped breaths.

It was a terrible, yet therapeutic thing, this collapse of defenses. Kathryn was being liberated of all shed hidden.

Everything she said brought Ben to a halt. He was so surprised to hear this from her, and even more surprised to realize that she was right. There was a long time when he had been distant from her, physically and emotionally. And stranger still he couldn't really remember why. Sure they had their problems, but all that came to him when he tried to remember specifics was a blurry haze of anger and pain. Yes, there had been reasons, but as he stood in this deep desert and struggled to survive, he knew there was no one he would rather face that struggle with.

A somber thought.  The words popped into his head before he realized it, almost as though he hadn't thought them, but rather they were implanted there. Ben had a sudden sense of being watched. No...examined. He looked around slowly, checking and making sure they were alone, and the desert responded with the absolute certainty that comes from desolate landscapes.

"I do want you Kathryn," Ben said to her softly, focusing on her once again. "I always have. I know...things have not been the best between us. I know that for whatever reason, life has been hard on us and staying connected hasn't come easy. But that is the reason I brought you here. Years ago, when I thought I had lost myself, my way in life, this place helped remove the darkness from my mind, clarify my way, and show me the path back to life. I brought you here, brought us here, seeking that same clarification. I want us to work, I really do, and I didn't know of a better way to bring about us getting back on track than to shed everything and start again. Does that make sense?"

He stepped closer to her and took her hand. Though gloved he could still feel the softness of her skin as the lightly woven fabric gave under his touch.

Earlier. In the midst of that whole debacle with the transmitter, which might not have been the best idea to bring up, I was trying to talk to you about us. The way things have changed. Its really been eating away at me.

Janeway stopped as Ben turned to face her.

Im not questioning your love for me, she continued, I never doubt that. But do you do you still want me, Ben? Theres a difference. Have you grown tired of me? Do I still fit into your future somehow? You havent held me in months, and when you do show affection, it seems as if its forced, and I have to initiate it. Whats wrong with us? Or me? I understand if you need to think about it, however, Id truly like to know before we complete this journey. The admiral looked away from Thrace and to the mountain over his shoulder in the distance, then back to him. Im not angry, no longer hurt. I just need to know. Is this our last trip together?

Kathryn felt awkward with being so direct about it, but Ben's actions over the past weeks and months had given her cause to wonder.

Ben kept his head low but his eyes on their distant destination as they walked. He knew there was much on her mind in reference to them. And the same for him. Their lives were changing, never seeming to reach the stability point he always envisioned himself having at this stage in his life. And yet that didn't bother him, at least, not as much as he once thought it would. Should he tell her that? Should he figure out a way to express that now, now that she had opened the lines for what was surely to be an intimate conversation?

"Sure Kathryn, what did you want to say? I know...we kinda got cut off. But I am all ears, as always. I know that this trip hasn't been the most conducive when it comes to such conversations. The Forge tends to push you more toward introspection than anything else."

Ben thought about that for a moment, wondered why that was so. Surely one could think it was the desolate solitude of the place, or the fact that the hidden dangers of the massive sandy landscape lent itself to a reverence that voices seemed to shatter. But, could there be something more to it, some almost other worldly quality of the forge and the creatures that resided in it that emanated this awesome reverie? The planet was host to one telepathic species...what if there were others?  Ben shook off the thought and turned instead to face Kathryn.

"What's on your mind My Dear?"

Honey, darling, sweetheartAll terms of endearment one used for the other since the beginning stages of their romance. More lately, however, those sentiments seemed forced, in an attempt to remain affectionate, even though the warmth had faded away for whatever reason. It wasnt that the two didnt love and care for each other, they truly did, and that was clear by the simple fact that theyd gone on this trip together. But before their close call last night, something had changed. Earlier in their journey, Kathryn had tried talking to Ben about how she felt, though her concerns came out as more of a gripe, and were ill timed, seeing as shed just lost their transmitter and Ben was understandably frustrated already. Listening to the object of his frustration get on HIS back about something didnt help to smooth things out one bit. Kathryn debated on whether or not to try again, now that things were calmer and they were on even better terms than when theyd arrived on Vulcan. Near death had a way of putting things into perspective, needless to say. Then again, she didnt want to risk ruining the harmony. She had to, though. Conquering the Forge and making it to Mt. Seleya would taste so much sweeter if she knew that they were really going to be okay with each other after that point.

Janeway took the doctors hand as she stepped back up onto the rocks with him.

Ben, do you mind if we talk?

Why would I mind if we talked? he replied with a chuckle.

I mean about what I was trying to talk to you about before. About us. I just dont want to mess up the mood if you dont want to get into it. But, I think its important that we do so.

Ben chided himself for having missed the accents on the inscription that showed it was from a spouse. At least it proved that the man had a family. Vulcans were incredibly practical in that regard, and if he was married he certainly had some children. His age alone would demand it.

"Well, that is a step in the right direction. Let's continue on to Seleya. If we get back on the rocks we can make it to the halfway point in no time. From there, we cross the deep desert and make our move on the mountain. After that, we can find out who this man is."

Ben moved down from the bones and back up onto the rocks. The wind kicked up just then, T'Khut high in the sky as the Vulcan Night began over the forge.

"Come on Honey," He called to Kathryn. "We can do this. I can't wait to get to Seleya now."
